My first kindergarten, my first Hammam, my first barber visit, and even my first photo under the Tamaghza Falls with my mom-all of that happened in Tozeur. Seeing it again is so nostalgic for me. For the signs on the side of the road: The color at the top of the milestone marker depends on the type of road you're taking (if it's national RED, regional YELLOW etc...), the names are of the main city straight up ahead (Tozeur and Tamaghza, each on a side, in this case) and the numbers indicate the number of kilometers left to reach that main city.
The numbers on the Highway Markers indicate the distance left (in Km) to reach the destination specified in that marker (Tamaghza, in this example) The Top of the markers are not painted differently depending on the region. They are painted differently depending on the type of road you're traveling. I think it's like this - Red for highways and other national roads. - Greed for regional roads. - Yello for local roads. - Blue... I forgot what this one is for honestly 🤪

I have visited Tozeur recently. I want it to be said that the valley you were in was not the valley used for Star Wars episode 4. The Valley used in the original is called Sidi Bouhlel and that is 40 minutes east of Tozeur. You were in a canyon that was a scouting location for Star Wars, but not used in a film.

Those highway markers were introduced by the French who built the first asphalt roads in North Africa. Current road standards may be starting to get rid of them or use different markers, but basically in French they are called "borne kilometrique" to be translated to English as "mile marker". The top is usually read when it is a national road network (route nationale) . I believe that it is yellow if the route is only a "county" level road (regional, in French route departementale and white for municipal). The number on the marker should be the kilometer number. Normally within the red top, the road number would be indicated. Usually something like N15 for National Road number 15, or D20 for departmental road 20, but the one in your video does not have it for some reason (a change in the standard or they lost the practice left by the French).

For example Tamaghza 74 means you still need to go 74 kilometers more to reach Tamaghza ... The colors indicates the type of the road you are on ... Red means national road / highway ... Blue means regional road ( if i can remember right) ... There also another number with a letter on either sides and it is the name and number of the road ... A1 , N 22 .... Etc ... Sorry for your loss 🙏 however the stones on highways are pinpointing the distance to reach the indicated city / village mentioned on it ... For example Tamaghza 74 means you still need to go 74 kilometers more to reach Tamaghza ... The colors indicates the type of the road you are on ... Red means national road / highway ... Blue means regional road ( if i can remember right) ... There also another number with a letter on either sides and it is the name and number of the road ... A1 , N 22 .... Etc ...
