    I think people try too hard to “swim as fast as they can” to swim fast. I’m a level 2 swimming teacher and I always tell the kids that I teach to “swim slow, to swim faster”. The greater the ‘splash’ the more resistance you create. Technique is so paramount to swimming fast, so take your time and just focus on technique and I guarantee you’ll be more efficient

      Too right, one week I did a really easy 4k swim. Average hr was 109. Then a week or so later I tried to swim fast, my hr was 132, I was 1 min faster 😖

    Thanks for the great tips explaining freestyle technique. Am learning to swim at the age of 39 by watching your videos. My breathing got a lot better by following tips from your other video ( relaxed breathing every two strokes). I can now swim laps without getting out of breath..Fellow swimmers in the pool complimented on my clean style, all thanks to you..Am currently trying to improve my catch phase. Can't wait to try the drills in pool..Keep posting.

    The part of my swimming that needs the most improvement is my kicking. I don't have those hyperflexible ankles... Going pigeon toed helped some, but I still have a weak kick. I do spend a lot of time on kicking laps. Never understood the skulling drills. Maybe because I drive with the windows down and always have my hand out the window to 'feel' the wind. I did see a woman in the pool doing the skulling while going feet first... I was impressed.
    I do like the Precision Fueling bottles in the back ground. I have tried every thing out there, and it is by far the best product for electrolyte replacement.

    i have started to go into ironman training (i am quite experienced with running and cycling). i can swim, i even feel very comfortable in it. i also dont get out of breath. i feel relaxed. but im freaking slow. im around 2:15/100m. sometimes a little faster, sometimes a little slower. i guess my biggest issue is the pull phase. the rest feels quite fine to me. but i might be wrong. i hope i can get to 2:00/100m until next year when my races start.

  • @tranceAction1979
    @tranceAction1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hmmm I'm a little confused. Your reasoning and explanation are clear, but I have been looking for relaxed yet fast freestyle for mid-distance (500-800) swimming and some videos show extending/gliding of the arm after the hand enters the water instead of initiating a catch right away. So I'm torn between two opposing advices. Can you possibly elaborate on this?

      I think for simplicity it was just avoided.

    • @CorvusVal
      @CorvusVal 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In open water swimming you tend to swim with a higher stroke rate due to the chop, turbulence, swimming in close proximity to others, etc. So less time for the glide phase, as slows down stroke rate.

  • @JJBpilot

    I go to the deep end to do the pull up and push out. I combine that with breathing too. Bubbles out, sink down... then high elbows to pull up and press up. Inhale.... repeat until you can't!

    I was never able to understand the proper breathing technique....until we lived in Asia! In Taiwan I observed the Chinese and how easily they 'glide', without a splash! I then put to practise their incredible style examples and my swimming improved almost immediately! I saw how perfect style can go faster than 'speed'.

    Can we talk about leg hair? How to remove as a man? Razor? Wax? Wet razor? How do pros legs always look so sharp and clean

    • @cityvisual
      @cityvisual 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go back to school and revise your fluid dynamics. Hair helps to build a boundary layer, where a thin film of air is trapped by hair, making your body less resistant (sticky) to drag. So if you want to follow the fashion please do. It may make you feel good and that’s not a bad thing.

    • @nicolasn6872
      @nicolasn6872 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Razor is the worst. It strengthen the hair as it grows back, and it doesn't last long (a few days). But it's cheap. Wax is the best. I go to a professional, so it's more costly, but you have smooth legs for at least 3 week (I'm a hairy guy), and then it grows slowly back to normal. The hair weakens as you wax it so if you keep doing it it'll take more time to grow back.
      Hope you have enough info. Cheers :)

      I’ve been returning to swimming from injury and Covid and took the approach of doing short and slow swims to begin with then increasing the time. I used to push it hard as every workout but now I’m keeping my stroke rate slow and controlled allowing me to really focus on strength and breathing. I’ve seen better results in a week than I did with 3 weeks training previously. It’s hard swimming slow though I found it’s best not to look at your watch at first.

  • @SeanGreen23
    @SeanGreen23 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not higher in the water. This looks like total immersion style. The best swimmers are fish and water mammals correct?…but when we look into the ocean won’t DON’T see the thousands/millions of fish on top of the water. Let’s focus on the body position that reduces drag…. And not focusing so much on being on top of the water. 👍🏾

    • @cityvisual
      @cityvisual 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Penguins? They catch fish. Far quicker and manoeuvrable than cold blooded fish who do not have the oxygen for sustained effort (ie not Tuna etc and some sharks that can perform) correct? Sorry I’m just being an ass. You are correct- immersion and drag reduction. Keep those legs together.

    Your info is valuable and correct, BUT some techique will never be usable by you, because of your type of body. You got no arms more than have it a 13yo schoolgirl, so no too much power in core and especially in arms, shoulders, chest. Your body style is kind of tyranosaurus rex.. legs and that's all. You developed own muscular structure as woman's usually do.
