I'd say mic 1 is the Coles, and mic 2 the Stager. To me, mic 1 sounds more complete, perfect for a minimal 2-3 mic setup, while mic 2 would be my choice in a bigger mic setup, e.g. as a stereo OV. Both sound really great! Very nice playing, too.
Listened on my Macbook speakers, but def think Mic 1 is Stager.....and Mic 2 is Coles.....Stager SR2's seem a lil more dark and the Coles a lil brighter in the mid highs....The Coles have always been a tad bright for my liking...always amazed they are the 'standards' for overheads for drums and such....have a AEA R88 and N22...but def interested in growing the Ribbon collection in the future. Thanks for the vid!
I love using the SR2N as a mono overhead (among other things)! I feel like it's one of the best values in microphones. You can get like 4 or 5 of them for the price of a single 4038. It's even more affordable than the AEA stuff. Have you tried Stager's larger more pricey mic (name slips my mind)? I read some reviews that said it is shockingly similar to the SR2N. PS- all due respect to Coles and AEA!
is mic 2 compressed? the snare sounds kind of pinched.... I would prefer mic 1. Mic 2 sounds very nice at the top-end, but the mids are somewhat hollow and I have the impression that the envelope of the individual drums is not very accurately captured. Anyway, seems like those mics would be great as pair on a single source if you can get them phase-coherent.
So, I used some eq on the tracks and keep my opinion up. Mic 1 has really nice top-end when boosted, Mic 2 sounds harsh in comparison, but somewhat cloudy and washy with boosted lows.
I like mic 1 better, it's smoother and it seems to me like it would be much easier to mix. Based on my experience with 4038, I suspect that mic 1 is the Coles but we will see.
I’m late to the party I can obviously see the reveal has happened but I reviewed these mics before and both are great. I could tell them apart instantly. Both are full bodied but the coles just edged it out in the high end clarity. (Listen to just the hats) I have an aea n8 that is killer but the Coles is a unique mic that will never lose it’s place in my mic locker
@@maxbauhof the n8 is will be a classic. Just like the coles it tames the cymbals so the toms can shine through. Plus it’s active which is super convenient 👍👍👍
The way the two mics are gained in the video alter our perception of the tonality. Mic 1 is dryer, more low mid, and has a darker tone. Mic 2 is has less low mids, a fat sub bottom, picks up a more flattering room tone and more airiness. Mic 1 has a coloration to room at 500 and 800 Hz. Mic 2 is more natural and picks up stick tone very accurately.
2 is the Coles! lol...wait no 1 is the Coles! Hahahaha. I really do think 1 is the Coles but something about it bothers me, so I was like maybe 2 is the Coles. It def sounds thicker and more nearfield like Id expect. But wait, are these demos EQ'd at all? No right?
@@maxbauhof Oh nice. Finally checked back. Okay good, I thought so, but I was looking back on my comment, and what I was saying about #1. Im just curious, is it an actual vintage Coles, or a newer one like?
The Coles does sound more ”mixed” but not in a hype-y way. I can see uses for both though. There’s been plenty times when I have had to cut highs in my coles even if it’s not a bright mic per se. That being said… my Coles has never sounded this good! So give us your secrets, which mic you using?
I think the Coles out classes the stager by itself in this video with these sounds. I think the stager sounds good though, especially when you add a little eq. I know what you mean, I’ve cut high end on my Coles too.
Never even heard about those mics but Mic 2 sounds better, more crispy. After quickly googling the mics and based on what people say about them, I would say Mic 2 is Stager SR2N lol
Amazing, thank you for posting this!
Thanks for watchin, any preference?

Thanks for watching, Coles def have a little more extension up top verses a lot of the other classic ribbon mics
Mic 1 is Stager
Mic 2 is Coles !!!
ive seen a lot of comparisons about these two and i'd say Stager has always been darker and crunchier
Comin in hot! I appreciate your confidence. I’ll respond in a day or so with the answer
Correct! Mic 1 is the stager, mic 2 is the Coles
Thanks for this! Based on this recording I made an EQ preset (using FabFilter Match EQ) to make my SR2N sound more like a 4038.
Nice the stager takes eq really well to my ears.

Yeah it’s a great price for sure, I dig them too. I have not tried the more expensive ones but I’ve heard good things!

we the people need to know which is which!

Mic 1 is the stager, mic 2 is the Coles
I have the Stager and it gives a similar vibe to the Coles but the Coles does
That cool familiar thing to the snare drum. Both are great microphones
Mic 2 more open. Depends on what you aim for... I prefer 2.
Yeah mic two is more open for sure, thanks for chiming in. I’ll update with a comment in bit 💯
