What a freaking MASTERCLASS in microphone comparison videos. THE gold standard on all of TH-cam, right here! Please do a lot more if you have the oppertunity, for the good of anyone wondering what kind of mic to buy.
You prolly dont give a shit but does someone know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I stupidly lost my login password. I would love any help you can offer me
@Nathanael Bishop i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
thank you! this is the perfect mic comparison that we need. no extra effects, same source and everything equal except the mic. well done! I just got an AEA R84, but originally wanted the Coles 4038, I think to my ear from this video there's just something about the Coles that I love. probably be sending the AEA back and going for the Coles.
The frequency signature of each mic was really easy to hear on the drums, less noticeable on guitar but still there. Thanks for the quick and useful video.
Yeah I instantly looked at how much those Stager SR-3 mics were. They carry so much weight and super smooth on that last guitar clip. I think the R122 has a condenser like quality which I enjoy, especially in a mix, however I did not like it as an overhead.
Yeah man ever since i've Heard the stager some Months ago i cant get IT Out of my head, i personally Use a sontronics Sigma , as i Got it for a great fucking Price But IT Sounds way Less ... Fragile , the sr3 ist Just incredibly intimate
If you have a great room and want an almost finished sounding drums with OH's only the Coles are hard to beat. For the room I record in with low ceilings the darker/fatter mics work best as OHs -- I have a pair of the Stager SR-2Ns that I love. Would love to own the SR-3 and SR-5.
On drums i love the Coles 4038 it has the best balance of the kit in my opinion, but i a prejudiced, i am such a fan of the 4038. On guitar i would choose the mic depending on the mix, all are sounding good and are useful, but the coles is the best of course :-) ...just kidding! One of the best comparission of ribbons i have seen! Thanks for charing.
I was going to leave a separate comment except you said it perfectly. The 4038 is the most natural sounding by far, but on guitars in a mix the different tone ranges could be good depending on the song. Engineered for years at a studio with a vast vintage and modern mic collection and the 4038 was my favorite "all arounder" by a large margin.
on drums liked it best too, but i think its little scooped - did miss little bit of weight of the snare punch (150-180 Hz). it of course has enormous bottom and silky top. R84 was close second , has better snare but not as warm big bottom. maybe better balanced but not as seductive as Coles. Royer sounded bandlimited like a guitar amp, Stager too dark.
This was great. Stager all the way, with the Royer and Coles alternating a close second. The AEA was a nasally midrange nightmare across most sources... who knew? ;)
Guess I'm the only one who thought the SE kicked ass. It's the most open an detailed on my studio monitors. Disappointed in the Royer as I found this video while shopping for a pair. Also found the Coles sounding veiled, but as someone else mentioned that's the mid scoop that so many people seem to enjoy.
I agree! The sE sounded awesome on the kit. I like the stager stuff as well, and I'd have liked to hear some Cascade vin jets, similar to the sE ribbons in this video the vin jets with Lundahl transformers surprised me with their full-spectrum, balanced sound.
R88 is the most balanced to me, especially in the top end, where it has a natural sounding sheen to balance the solid low end. The stager is definitely more round in the mids, rolled off in the top. The Coles sounds like a Coles. Nicely balanced, somewhat scooped in the 4-500 range in comparison. SE & Royer always sound broken on drums - bright & spitty in a way I deeply dislike. Coles sounds like it's about to give up the ghost on the low notes of that guitar amp though!
I'm glad to find out why I don't se 4038s used on guitar and bass cab. That resonance rattle was horrible. The mic sounded broken. Seems like drums is where they will stay. I am surprised to se the RNR1 being the only mic that really sounded full range. The 4038 has a flatter frequency response measurement, but the RNR1 seems to have more treble detail. That was a surprise.
that stager SR-3 is bringing all the meat and potatoes to dinner. Great mic to blend in with other microphones. could see this in a crotch/side of kit position.
Stager and Coles both had very desirable qualities. Coles sounds smoother to me but Stager has more weight in the low mids. AEA actually sounds like it has a bit of both.
Nice! ........ sE is very harsh and cheap sounding .........Coles sounds most balanced ...AEA also very nice...... don't like the Stager........ Royer wouldn't be my choice for this overheads but it has a very compact, compressed sound and is great on the guitar amp ..........

@Nathanael Bishop it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out :D
@Rodrigo Roger No problem :)

This is the video I’ve been looking for. Thank you for the awesome quality and focus on the sound of each mic!
Fantastic mic comparison demonstration! Clear information, not diluted with effects, fairly quick comparisons... Crushing it! Thank you!
This is how you do a mic shootout, very good grooves for demoing these mics, finally someone with power, punch and vibe :)
The frequency signature of each mic was really easy to hear on the drums, less noticeable on guitar but still there. Thanks for the quick and useful video.
Am i the only one who liked the sE RNR1 on overheads. The stager was good and a lot warmer but the sE RNR1 just has so much more presence.
I use the R84 but every time I hear some coles...is just like I need to pay attention.. Amazing video!

Thanks for the VDO. The Stager is huge in the bottom end, but the Coles has this nice mid scoop sound which I prefer.
Man. WOW! I knew I’d like the Rupert RNR1 and the Coles but my favorite was the R84. And that’s crazy because I have one
tx a lot, now I know! gonna order a pair of Coles! amazing mics!!

coles!!!
STAGER SR-3's ALL THE WAY !!! Great Video, Captain A.B. !!! Nice to see that Robot's can rock the kit, too... : )
I think the differences in the drum sound mostly come from different mic positions. I would have loved to see them all in the same position
You're right. Snare frequency varie due to mics alignment.
That Coles is freggin amazing on overhead

me too
Coles wins again on drums.

The Stager was super weighty. Very nice.
The coles for drums is miles away from the others…!!!
Coles 48, it has the most 3d sound.
that Stager SR-3 is so faaaatttttt
that stager SR-3 is bringing all the meat and potatoes to dinner. Great mic to blend in with other microphones. could see this in a crotch/side of kit position.

You just can't beat Coles! Wow

Can't beat the Coles.
AEA wins, hands down
😂
AEA)
Coles by landslide
