    In this video, we continue looking at electrolysis by exploring how we extract the metal aluminium. We look at the reactions at the cathode and the anode and then explore some specific details of this process, including why the anode must be replaced regularly.
    This video is based on the AQA spec. If you are following a different exam board then you should check your specification. The Amazon link above is an affiliate link. I was just a little confused about which one I should learn and if a question came up on the test which way would I explain it?

    Fun fact: you are also reading the comments instead of focusing on the vid and studying.

    I'm confused how can Al 3+ gain 3 extra electrons and be neutral it will have 15 electrons now. Shouldn't it lose 3?

    • @adz9409
      @adz9409 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know where you coming from, however you need to remember that electrons are negative. So when it gains the three NEGATIVE electrons it cancels out the 3+, as 3-3 is 0.

    I have a question- why do we need to double the equations? (3:35) and do I need to double the equations in the exam?

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We need to double the equations because the gases produced (eg Cl2, O2, H2) are all diatomic molecules (ie have two atoms in the molecule). So we cannot show the equation for just one atom as that would be inaccurate. You would be expected to double the equation in the exam.
