    You probably saved my succulent! I bought one without researching and now I have no idea how to keep it alive.

      I Hate Almond Joys well thank you! Just remember, they like well-draining soil, lots of light, and the #1 killer is watering too often! I have a video on how to know when to water but in general, you let the soil get bone dry before ever watering again. I wait even longer til my plant looks wrinkly or floppy. Good luck with your plant and I hope it leads you to get more! (It’s an addiction.) Thanks for watching!

    I just bought a handful of succulents and this was super helpful! I'm the type to baby plants, and I've struggled with succulents previously because I definitely have a tendency to overwater if I don't force myself not too

    I'm so grateful for this video! Finally caved and bought my first succulents today. They were pretty dry so of course I watered them right when I got home. Im planning on potting them in the morning and just came across your video while trying to learn more. So now all of my new babies were very gently taken out and put careful on a wire rack to help dry out the soil. Thank you so much for the great information

    Thank you for this information. I've been struggling with my succulents (A LOT). Just purchased several more today... repotted some of them and THEN saw you're video. I had to pause the video to take notes and clean up my work station because I now know that both my soil AND the soil of the new plant must be dry.

    • @SweetSweetSucculents
      @SweetSweetSucculents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheryl Baker sounds good! The soil type is important too, it needs to be well draining and fast drying. I use a lot of perlite and chicken grit added to the regular succulent soil. And then I never water til the plant tells me. Good luck!!

      @@SweetSweetSucculents Thank you for taking the time to reply. This is only the second time I've commented on a Tuber's video. I have JUST recently learned that I cannot use the succulent mix straight out of the bag. I've had to (and am in the process of) repotting nearly each and every one of my plants - including the succulents because the soil is not draining properly. Thanks again for the information.

    • @SweetSweetSucculents

    When I transplant my succulents I check for dry or wet b4 transfering to another pot- if dry I soak it in a little bit of water to soften the dirt b4 loosening the soil so not to damage the roots. If too wet i don't water it I just plant it in cactus soil with sand and permiculite simi dry dirt. Also what help is moisture water meter. $8.99- $34.00 Amazon or Wal-mart. Great vlog for beginners! 👍❤👍

    • @SweetSweetSucculents
      @SweetSweetSucculents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elena Celeste I don’t moisten the roots because you’re making open wounds when you break them up which could potentially cause rot...running water would probably work better. Also vermiculite holds water so might not be as good as perlite or other non-organic additives. Sand is good but only coarse sand...fine sand or beach-type sand will also hold water a long time.
      I used to use a moisture meter but now I just watch my plants and let them tell me when they are thirsty. A meter is good but even if it says “very dry”, that doesn’t always mean it’s time to water. I did a video about this but didn’t talk about the moisture meter so may do this in a future video. Thanks for watching!!

    Im so glad i found this video i am subscribing! My roomate and i each bought a succulent a couple months apart from each other. We both overwatered of course and they died. So i bought us each a new one a month ago. I had heard once a month watering so i learned about watering today. They were SO DRY. I bottom watered. They are tiny plants in tiny plastic pots but i have the twrra cottas that the other ones came in. Neither have holes so ill try to hand drill holes in them. Now i have to figure out what each one is, summer or winter growing. So much to learn but once you know, you know i guess.

I lived in an apartment back the so it was years and years ago. I bought seeds from Wish once. Idk what became of those. So this is my first real attempt. They are everywhere in north texas. Maybe like that in other states too.

      What brand of perlite do you use? I really like what you’ve done for your soil and I kind of want to do the same thing. I can’t even tell you how nervous I am about overwatering or under watering succulents. I’ve watched so many videos on how to care for them and I just watched one last night that they said to saturate the pot and let it all drain out. And then they moved some of the dirt and showed it was still dry underneath. I don’t know if that’s because of the type of soil that the person used that even though the pot was saturated with water it was still dry underneath the surface. They also suggested to use rainwater as much as possible. Is that true? They said it had some kind of electrolytes or something in it for the plants.

    • @jensglitterobsession7442

    • @SweetSweetSucculents
      @SweetSweetSucculents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jens Glitter Obsession I use whatever perlite is available, it’s all basically the same. Now I’m starting to add chicken grit in also because it doesn’t float to the top and it’s cheap! Don’t be afraid of underwatering, that won’t kill your plants. Overwatering basically means watering too often. When you do water (when you know the plants need it), you can saturate the pot. It should drain out fast though, if your mix is good. It should also dry out relatively quickly. I have a video of how I can tell when my plants need water - they usually look wrinkly or feel kind of floppy instead of firm. Let me know if you can’t find it! And yes, plants love rainwater, but it’s not a necessity. They can do fine without it, but they sure do love it!

    • @SweetSweetSucculents
      @SweetSweetSucculents  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can wait that long if you just want to, but if you are using proper soil that dries out and drains fast, and you repot it in dry soil, any root wounds you might have made will be dried out in a day or two, so you could water if needed. If the soil you are using is not good quality or hold onto water for a long time, you may need to wait longer. But then you’ll have a lot of other problems in the future since succulents need fast drying and well draining soil

Mine is a 20 x 20 and we have a wood frame, plexiglass windows for the sides, and that corrugated plastic for the top. I can tell you that being somewhere hot, ventilation is key! We have three ceiling fans and four exhaust fans and still on hot days it can get over 100, and that’s with the double doors wide open. If we could go back and do it all over again, I would’ve made it so that the windows on the sides could be opened and closed. Same for some ceiling vents possibly

      @@mwoods4608 it’s OK if there are hardly any roots left. If you want to spray with hydrogen peroxide it wouldn’t hurt anything but just let it dry out first. Succulents are tough. I’ve learned that it’s helpful to use gloves to handle the succulents due to them being affected by the oils in our skin. I used to have a living stone plant, and it didn’t like being touched.

    • @SweetSweetSucculents
      @SweetSweetSucculents  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and to add to that, echeveria and other soft succulents often have a fine powdery coating on them called farina. And once you touch it, gloves or not, it’s gone forever. So with those types, it’s best to only grab the root ball or the under portions of the leaves. And yes, living stones/lithops are super picky about everything!

      @SweetSweetSucculents  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you’re asking if you can put two succulents in one pot and the answer is yes, but it’s good to try to match them based on things they like. For example, Echeveria like a lot of sun and aloes and haworthias like a little bit less. Same with watering issues, it’s good to pair them up based on similarities. I have a video where I go over the basic types of Succulents and their basic light and watering needs if you’re trying to figure out if your two plants are compatible or not. I hope this helps!

    Hi! I have a Echeveria Perle von Nurnberg. It was overwatered in the store that I bought it from. So currently, it is outside in a cup with no soil so that it’s roots can dry completely. The problem is that no store has cactus/succulent soil and I don’t want to buy some online for fear that it might take to long to get here. So I bought normal potting soil mixture. What can I add to maximize the normal potting soil mixtures potential. I heard that mixing the soil with rocks and small pebbles can help. Thanks so much for the video it was really informative!

      Bleach U yeah until you have something you could use lots of that gravel, you know the kind you find in the playground (pea gravel)...but succulents are tough unless it comes to water. It could sit, roots out and all, probably for several weeks or even a month or more without soil, so time is still on your side. Good thing you are drying it out though. A lot of stores overwater their succulents. Thanks for watching and good luck!!

    8:00 I disagree with your choice to pot the plant in the new soil along with the old rootbound soil.. especially if it's full of peat moss, as you mention is sometimes the case. I'm sure the plant could manage through that situation, but it doesn't look ideal to me..
    For repotting succulents, I recommend soaking the soil the day before, gently use a hose to wash away the old dirt, let the succulents rest & dry unpotted for a few days, then pot them directly in the fresh soil.
    Just a thought, thank you for sharing.

      Omg I am just now seeing this comment!! I try to reply to every comment I get but anyway sorry for the delay. I’m going through the TH-cam studio app and it’s actually showing me some old comments from videos I made years ago. I understand what you’re saying about the soil and that is one way to do it, it’s just that I go through so many plants on a regular basis and I have found that whether you do it or not, they tend to do OK as long as you get some of it off and use good soil to add in. Plus I already knew that jades aren’t really picky in regards to water. Believe it or not that particular plant is still on my shelf today in that same pot and it looks big and beautiful! You can probably see it in some of my walk-through videos that have made not too long ago. Anyway thanks for commenting and sorry for the late reply, I guess better late than never!

She thought I was irresponsible for not watering it so she gave it a whole cup of water. Next day it was brown, squishy and stunk. Well are you talking about any plants or specifically Succulents? If we were talking about Succulents, I would just get some potting soil but mix perlite with it until it’s extra well draining. You don’t have to buy any kind of fancy soil or pots. Just make sure your pots have drainage holes at the bottom and the soil does not hold water. One of the newest videos on my channel is about making your own soil mix but you don’t need anything fancy

    • @SweetSweetSucculents
      @SweetSweetSucculents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shae.Ken I would keep them outside in the sun and let them dry out as fast as they can. The asparagus fern is not even a succulent so it probably is just fine. Depending on where you live, bright sun actually may be a little too much for your other three plants, they don’t need quite as much sun as some other succulents. Aloe can get sunburn, my ice plants don’t like the heat very much, and zebra plant also doesn’t need for all day sun. They may do better in separate pots. But if they dry out and esp if they weren’t wet, they are probably fine.

      I’d do small ones that typically come in a tray. If you will email me, I know a few sellers who sell them by the tray cheaper than on most of the normal websites. I’m at radiofemme@yahoo.com
      The only major issue with buying a tray is that you may have to get some little pots to put each one in separately. Otherwise, you may spend a lot more money buying them each in single pots but I have some recommendations for that as well if you’d rather do it that way

    • @SweetSweetSucculents
      @SweetSweetSucculents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Audrey Williams If you are really worried you could, but I think as long as they dry out really fast and you keep them in the sun they should be fine. It’s more of a safeguarding tip because the soil they use in most stores doesn’t dry out fast but if you keep it in the sun it will dry up faster. I wouldn’t worry unless they stay wet for more than a few days. Water is the main thing that kills them o if they don’t look wrinkly or feel floppy, they probably don’t need water
