I remember one time in the ARMA3 modding community a certain team made it so that their mod would check if your game contained a mod from another dev team they disliked and would crash the game if it was detected. To say the least the community and steam was very unhappy since that was considered malware by steam workshop's TOS
There was an Arma 3 gear mod that would prevent you from loading parts of the game if your in-game name was in a list in the mod's code. The mod developers don't like people who make Star Wars mods or people who port stuff into Arma from other games, like the Arma Half Life mod for example. The sun is leaking. What's funny though is, the list was super long, and some of the people they targeted had generic names like "Jose" or "Steve", and you could entirely circumvent the malicious code by just... changing your name. Anyone who happened to have one of the generic names would also get caught in the crossfire if they used that gear mod.
Weirdly common in lewd mod spaces. The HDoom developer does something similar if you try to run it with Brutal Doom, although it just spawns you in a death trap. Sims 4 sex mods have a habit of containing poison pill code regarding certain other mods to wreck your shit if you have kinks they don't like.

Apparently the entire "blocking" mechanism they did to prevent you from playing the mod was essentially injected into client.dll, it's possible to see the message by inspecting with HxD. There's also another message after this one that seems like it'd be triggered if it detected a Hardware configuration that didn't match Overcharged's requirements (for some reason) - "Upgrade your PC - the current hardware is just ridiculous..."
Asking someone to upgrade their PC to play Half Life 2 in this day and age is ridiculous… and the game barely looks any different if not worse than normal HL2

It's mostly HL2 in-dev version leak stuff that was later cut from final release, Half-Life 1: Source stuff, and... well yeah I guess some hodgepodge assets from fpsbanana or other places.

This actually has insane implications. So you're tellling me I could make a game in the Source engine, add a line of code with a person's Steam ID, and make the game DO SOMETHING to their PCs??? What If someone makes a random fun Source game, share it on Steam or whatever, and does the same trick with multiple TH-camrs and add malvare to their PCs? I hope Valve does something with this, these are just petty developers, but that trick sounds like a dangerous exploit.
Mods and games have been able to do this for forever. iirc Alliance of Valiant Arms had a keylogger and that's why it was removed from Steam. If the method they're using isn't detected by common antivirus and stays quiet, the only other way to be sure is decompilation and reading through the entire source code. I don't think you or Valve want to do that.
this isn't really an exploit, nor a hack, nor anything other than very unethical and ToS-violating code. and you can't really take it out of the source engine, because if someone already has access to the code that the source engine is running on (99% of the mods in moddb modify the source engine's behavior in one way or another), then they can do anything that any other file can do in your computer. including unwanted files.
You definitely don't know programming, each program like steam games work in isolated memory. You can't access anything unless the script can access windows API The mod devs technically don't exploit any info from user.

Some additional things that I got from my own playthrough of the mod (around 13th october, iirc it was the first or second revision of the mod available to the public): - All the spawn presets outside of nightmare don't seem to do anything - The bullsquid in the water hazards didn't dissapear, it was very sloppily moved to a different location and devs forgot to remove it. - You can skip the entirety of the mines if you don't want to go altpath, simply dash through a crack in the wall and go towards the light. - Shields can't be even picked up by overcharged gravity gun. - Lost Coast is still only accessible in that weird spot near the docs. - You get softlocked after beating it, game puts you in a black box where you drown (sidenote, in the first unpublic version of the mod it supposedly transitioned you to air exchange after completing LC, take this with a grain of salt though, it's just a rumor) - Gunships most likely cause a memory leak related crash. Only way to prevent this issue from happening is to disable the explosion particles option in the menus. Fun fact, in most of the settings this option is enabled by default! - The reason why you seemed to take damage in the APC is because the vehicle seems to hit you first, then travel towards the target. Honestly, I doubt that they even intended to leave the APC there, as APC isn't even available to drive in the test map. - With nightmare preset, you're forced to go through the coast alt path... which doesn't even has a proper level trigger (instead of d2_coast_10over it tries to move you to d2_lostcoast_00). In other words, you have to cheat in order to progress through the game. - In the bridgepoint section the dropships never left for me. - If you stand in antlion guard's corpse when vort does the pheromone extraction, you'll be stuck because you won't receive pheromones. - HEV suit gloves are kind of a weird case. I also noticed that and I think it's more of a recording software issue more than anything else, as they swap colors as soon as you press record (sidenote HEV suit color doesn't change, for better or for worse). - Shock trooper model was taken without permission. - Zombies not screaming seems to be an issue of newer versions of the mod. IIRC when I tried to burn them they used the non-reversed screaming. - Shame that you hadn't mentioned the alt path for nova prospect, because honestly outside of few jitters here and there is pretty decent, and has some cool ideas that valve could've implemented into the prison chapters. - For whatever reason you can get access to both tau cannon (uses model from leak) and gauss cannon (uses model from hl1 source, I think). Devs apparently coudn't pick which model they want to use for the gun, so they went with both. - City 17 chapters include several cut enemies, including creamators (yes, you can get their flamer), combine guards (appeared in prison earlier but here they come in a larger force and are more infuriating to fight against) and hydras (in the sewers, their encounter is taken from the E3 and it's very easy to break by killing the combine that hydra was supposed to impale). - In the follow freeman chapter you can get a vortigaunt follower, which charges your suit occasionally and is pretty much immortal. - Citadel reintroduced alien slaves. - To whoever placed that combine guard on top of the elevator, I hope you step on a lego.

The really upsetting thing for me personally is that this mod has alot of potential, but it's just terrible in execution, really. And the new enemies and features they brag about just don't work half of the time.. especially the purple flying boomerang-resembling enemy. We already have manhacks - why have that?

I just don't like modders putting more mobs to the based game to just tells us its more fun now. it's already fun as it is, its acceptable if its the cut contents but putting mobs that's not aesthetically the same as the game just ruins the immersion. I only do weapon enhancements, a.i improved, some graphical upgrades and improved vehicles movements and player movements in the vanilla game. What i see that has potential are those who made their own maps and narratives where creativity is.
I did a full playthrough of Overcharged 2.0 and a second playthrough that stopped close to white forest, that's when half life updated and completely broke the mod for me. A ton of the bugs I encountered in the first playthrough did not repeat on my second one. And I haven't found a lot of the bugs you mentioned. If anything, Overcharged's main bug is how inconsistently it breaks.

I hope Valve does something with this, these are just petty developers, but that trick sounds like a dangerous exploit.
Mods and games have been able to do this for forever. iirc Alliance of Valiant Arms had a keylogger and that's why it was removed from Steam. If the method they're using isn't detected by common antivirus and stays quiet, the only other way to be sure is decompilation and reading through the entire source code. I don't think you or Valve want to do that.

this isn't really an exploit, nor a hack, nor anything other than very unethical and ToS-violating code. and you can't really take it out of the source engine, because if someone already has access to the code that the source engine is running on (99% of the mods in moddb modify the source engine's behavior in one way or another), then they can do anything that any other file can do in your computer. including unwanted files.
You definitely don't know programming, each program like steam games work in isolated memory. You can't access anything unless the script can access windows API

Some additional things that I got from my own playthrough of the mod (around 13th october, iirc it was the first or second revision of the mod available to the public):
- All the spawn presets outside of nightmare don't seem to do anything
- The bullsquid in the water hazards didn't dissapear, it was very sloppily moved to a different location and devs forgot to remove it.
- You can skip the entirety of the mines if you don't want to go altpath, simply dash through a crack in the wall and go towards the light.
- Shields can't be even picked up by overcharged gravity gun.
- Lost Coast is still only accessible in that weird spot near the docs.
- You get softlocked after beating it, game puts you in a black box where you drown (sidenote, in the first unpublic version of the mod it supposedly transitioned you to air exchange after completing LC, take this with a grain of salt though, it's just a rumor)
- Gunships most likely cause a memory leak related crash. Only way to prevent this issue from happening is to disable the explosion particles option in the menus. Fun fact, in most of the settings this option is enabled by default!
- The reason why you seemed to take damage in the APC is because the vehicle seems to hit you first, then travel towards the target. Honestly, I doubt that they even intended to leave the APC there, as APC isn't even available to drive in the test map.
- With nightmare preset, you're forced to go through the coast alt path... which doesn't even has a proper level trigger (instead of d2_coast_10over it tries to move you to d2_lostcoast_00). In other words, you have to cheat in order to progress through the game.
- In the bridgepoint section the dropships never left for me.
- If you stand in antlion guard's corpse when vort does the pheromone extraction, you'll be stuck because you won't receive pheromones.
- HEV suit gloves are kind of a weird case. I also noticed that and I think it's more of a recording software issue more than anything else, as they swap colors as soon as you press record (sidenote HEV suit color doesn't change, for better or for worse).
- Shock trooper model was taken without permission.
- Zombies not screaming seems to be an issue of newer versions of the mod. IIRC when I tried to burn them they used the non-reversed screaming.
- Shame that you hadn't mentioned the alt path for nova prospect, because honestly outside of few jitters here and there is pretty decent, and has some cool ideas that valve could've implemented into the prison chapters.
- For whatever reason you can get access to both tau cannon (uses model from leak) and gauss cannon (uses model from hl1 source, I think). Devs apparently coudn't pick which model they want to use for the gun, so they went with both.
- City 17 chapters include several cut enemies, including creamators (yes, you can get their flamer), combine guards (appeared in prison earlier but here they come in a larger force and are more infuriating to fight against) and hydras (in the sewers, their encounter is taken from the E3 and it's very easy to break by killing the combine that hydra was supposed to impale).
- In the follow freeman chapter you can get a vortigaunt follower, which charges your suit occasionally and is pretty much immortal.
- Citadel reintroduced alien slaves.
- To whoever placed that combine guard on top of the elevator, I hope you step on a lego.

I just don't like modders putting more mobs to the based game to just tells us its more fun now. it's already fun as it is, its acceptable if its the cut contents but putting mobs that's not aesthetically the same as the game just ruins the immersion. I only do weapon enhancements, a.i improved, some graphical upgrades and improved vehicles movements and player movements in the vanilla game. What i see that has potential are those who made their own maps and narratives where creativity is.

I did a full playthrough of Overcharged 2.0 and a second playthrough that stopped close to white forest, that's when half life updated and completely broke the mod for me.
A ton of the bugs I encountered in the first playthrough did not repeat on my second one.
And I haven't found a lot of the bugs you mentioned.
If anything, Overcharged's main bug is how inconsistently it breaks.
