That robot from the boss level is Robo-Dexo 2000, which is controlled by the boy genius himself, Dexter.

Movement wise, I've really been liking Superman. Idk if something about his physics are different than the other characters, but I feel like he can really close the gap between opponents a lot quicker and with much more fluidity than other characters.
But yeah, I do agree that the game would probably feel much better overall if air acceleration was bumped up a bit. Personally, I would also like to see the ground speed increased a little bit too.
