Speaking about the recast portion of yakuza 3 kiwami, even if they played a super duper small role for a small portion of the early game. Saki's mother's VA Tanaka Atsuko also passed recently, so thats another character to recast for kiwami 3. She played a more important role in 1/k1 which was reina. Even in the latest RGG summit (32.5) yokoyama + staff gave their condolences live and recounted their time working together.
While this is a topic mainly about Yakuza 3, I think the Switch port of Kiwami is pretty cool for a few reasons. First off is it's $20. That's a pretty good launch price compared to other Switch ports of similar titles. The only downside is it's digital only which definitely blows but I don't think it'll affect sales that much when the physical/digital split with the Switch is near neck-neck. Another factor is I'm pretty confident that Sega and even RGG themselves will be on the frontlines with Switch 2 support so Kiwami 1 is there as testing grounds for future releases which will be good for audience growth. The games benefited a ton from being everywhere and being cheap to get into. Another big factor is a major demographic shift in the last few years. There are still some PlayStation faithful that play more core games such as your DMCs, your FFs, etc. Lately though Sony has been kinda forcing AAA slop down everyone's throats to the point where both them and Microsoft are geared towards only showing big games which leaves smaller gamesn and retro titles like the Trails in the Sky FC remake or the recent Capcom FG collections in a spot where they would never really have the same kind of excitement at those two other stages. Compared to Nintendo however, who've manage to cultivate not only a large playerbase but a good platform for those newer titles to thrive, it helps their audience keep their expectations in check on the type of games to expect. Sure there's still those who will bad mouth any reveal that doesn't have a popular plumber or elf on screen, but that gets offset when you see people like MaximilianDood squeling with glee at the MvC collection and Fighting Collection Vol. 2 reveals. A big example is how FFXVI and FFVII Rebirth have not sold enough to satisfy Square. There's a lot of factors at play that could effect it, like the economy, people not liking $70 games unless it's from first -party studios, and the rise of live service like Hoyoverse titles and Fortnite, FF as an IP (beyond XIV which is an MMO) has significantly weakned so Square is in an extremely rough spot In how this ties into RGG: the PS5 is selling like trash in Japan and has only gone up in price overtime. While the games are selling good over here, the state of the domestic market is concerning, and Nintendo just dominates the whole space over there even if the hardware is weak. If the next system meets a power threshold that satisfies all JP third-party devs while being the not-as-expensive alternative to the PS5 is going to be a big deal. The PS5 will be important for the west still. That also doesn't get into the rise of PC gaming here and how a lot of those niche JP vames have found a home on PC which is overall good. Also gives the Steam Deck a purpose if you need a portable experience even if i still don't think it's comparable to the Switch (yeah it's more powerful but the software and hardware goals aren't in the same league). Pardon the long post but it's a good time to be excited about the series again.
That's definitely true for the story side because it'll likely be 1:1 or at least almost the same. Gameplay wise though, it'll be different and people will either find it better or worse depending on who you'll ask.

Great to see the Yakuza four reunited again ! I'm waiting for an announcement regarding Yakuza wars, a spin-off focused on Ichiban and his crew. And perhaps also, something related to the Judgement series. I'm positive there will also be something about the show. A trailer, a sneak-peek, and perhaps the intervention of the director in the Summit. A huge surprise would be Majima returning for a game again. Something between 7 and 8. Or between 0 and Kiwami. Now, as for Kiwami 3. I loved the environment of Okinawa. They nailed the tranquility and the unique aura of that place. I felt this feeling again with Hawaii. I'm sure it will be top notch. I'm looking forward to the gameplay improvement they will do with it. Will they bring back style switching like Gaiden, or will they keep the dragon style as the sole fighting style ? The cabaret club needs some major adjustments because the OG was a bit too hard I think. I'm not against adding some more cutscenes to help elevate some cutscenes too. Like with the kids, Majima, Kashiwagi (which was supposed to be his last game), Mine, Richardson and Joji. Need more Joji, more backstory with his brother Shintaro, more bonding moment with Kiryu. It could be cool to have some secondary characters returning from 0, 1 and Kiwami 2. To assure continuity. (When I first played 3, I was a bit sad because I knew I wouldn't see or have mentions about Pocket fighter, Yuki, etc. until the newer games) They can overhaul the training with that master in the beach, as well as the Coliseum. And that's a personal request of mine, but it would be beautiful if they could let us custom Kiryu like in Gaiden. This would be the cherry on the top, and put Kiwami 3 in a special seat compared to Kiwami 2 and Kiwami. Anyways, I'm glad Kuroda is still in the series in one way or another. I love his voice acting, and some games make it shine better than others. 3 is among them.
The HLA missions in Yakuza 3 were absolutely peak for me. Even though the game is a decade + old I still love it dearly, and it's actually boggling that they don't use that mechanic in newer games
HLA is one of my favorite Yakuza major side activities (I'm currently up to Yakuza 5 finale) mostly because of its story and the idea that some of these assassins were able to redeem themselves and hopefully live better results as a result of the HLA. Kinda sad it hasn't been brought up again after 3, but that can be said about a lot of stuff in Yakuza.
I'm honestly wondering what they are planning for the series' 20th anniversary next year. 10 years ago, we got Yakuza 0. So what will it be this time? Another prequel, set even further back? A direct sequel to Y0? Something else entirely? You just _know_ they are cooking something really special for that occasion, and I personally can't wait to see what - even if it may no be revealed just yet.
I had no idea you guys had a podcast, I'll definitely watch some more. Personally my biggest issue with Yakuza 3's combat isn't the blocking it's the lack of damage you deal.

For a add on capiagn, I do think Rikiya would probably be best just to get more screen time with him. And I wouldn't mind them reworking how the orphanage stuff works. Restructuring when and where you spend time with the kids so that it's perhaps less intrusive, and the story flows better.
i think remakes do pose a danger in terms of replacing the original but in the case of a potential kiwami 3 its important to note that 3 is already on modern hardware and has a PC port. its not like the demons souls remake where it just kills any chance for the real game to get a proper rerelease only to replace it with a far worse version.
Speaking of Nishiki sister they could have taken that weirdly attractive doctor model from 0 you know the one we see on the ship for a total of 2 minutes and make some small changes maybe make it look like kiryu at the end of IW
On the topic of filming in Japan (the Kabukicho area in this context) i think you have to ask every business owner on the said street for permission to film, so most movies/tv shows just create their own sets or do it illegally.

Personally I really like the combat in 3 obviously there are problems but I really enjoy playing with that era of kiriyus dragon of dojima style. It's the only game where you play the full game as kiriyu with this combat style in the current accepted play order. And it feels like with the focus on the 0 styles dragon style has been neglected
There is one thing that I fear for is that if Kiwami 3 is actually a thing, there is a potential chance of spoiling few contents from 6 and the aftermath of IW right at the beginning or during the ending scene as 3 plays a huge part for the series due to how relevant those kids, Haruka and Haruto are in Okinawa (Or even Yuuta). And because of that, once the newcomers step into Kiwami 3 after beating Kiwami 2, those 6 and IW related Easter Eggs will spoil right away and kinda ruins the plot telling in some ways. Again, it's just my personal thought :3
Remember how Gaiden ended? No spoilers, but there was kind of a cliffhanger for certain characters. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was the start of a new era in the "real time combat" side of the franchise: Replace "Yakuza" with "Daidoji" in the title, for example, and imagine that LAD Gaiden was "Daidoji 1" starring Kiryu. Next RGG game could be "Daidoji 2" starring can't-say-who to not spoil Gaiden for those who've not finished it (hint: the guy who ended up in a trunk)
One thing thats frustrating about the nagoshi fans narrative is that yokoyama has been in charge of yakuza for a long time, nagoshi was promoted to a c-suit position at sega in like 2012, nagoshi hadn't been resonsible for the day to day running of the series for like a decade before he left
With the "Kiwami-fying" segment, specifically Kurohyou, how would they approach the password system in both games because of the KO strikes, "Tenma Brawler", and items? Would they implement a mailbox option in Tatsuya's house so he can obtain the scrolls for the strikes and in 2 would they just make unlocking "Tenma Brawler" into a substory similar to Muay Thai and Sumo? A major feature that comes into question would be the online battle, 1 v 1 OC creator, would RGG just cut them or keep them and allow people to fight, for Kurohyou one they'd keep the challenges for the custom character because it isn't online but for Kurohyou two there is just timed open world for your custom character but it's purely online. Granted, I could be overanalyzing this hypothetical of a Kurohyou remaster, but I don't want them to cut content again it's just minor stuff compared to the main game but still I don't want this one thing to up and be cut completely seeing as its still possible to do online through emulator.

seriously, it does NOT feel like 2 years since ishin kiwami. but that could be my fault for marathoning every mainline game and both judgments after gaiden. you have to make sure you brain is melted properly before playing infinite wealth. kiwami 3, it would make me happy to see ryukyu in the dragon/unreal engine but i dont NEED IT need it

I don't understand why people want Kiwami 3 so much, at least right now. I think RGG instead really needs to give their older titles some more respect. Yakuza 3 (Well, most of it anyway. The Japanese PS3 version is still the only complete version of it) is right there on every modern platform, easily accessible. Meanwhile RGG has done literally nothing with Kenzan since releasing it exclusively in Japan, exclusively for PS3, sixteen and a half years ago. On top of that there's Dead Souls, 1 & 2 HD, FOTNS, original Ishin, and both Kurohyou games, all still stuck on older hardware, and most untranslated (officially). I just wish the fanbase would be pushing for these games instead of a remake of a game that already has a pretty recent remaster. I would also be concerned about the quality of another Kiwami game. Right now, Kiwami 1 and 2 basically serve as replacements for the original 1 and 2 given their lack of any modern ports, with the most recent one being almost twelve years old now. I think this is really bad because these remakes are just too different to serve as replacements. I would also argue that Ishin Kiwami is objectively worse than the original. Is there a single person who asked for the troop system to extend outside of battle dungeons and add these unfitting magical effects to them? And no, they are not simply "optional" given how bosses use them regardless of whether you have any equipped or not, and health upgrades from the skill tree are reduced because you're now expected to make use of the health bonuses that come with equipping these troop cards. There are also several changes to other things in the game that are just bafflingly terrible such as blacksmith costs being increased by an absurd amount and the frustrating RNG of the reworked seal system (as if the original Ishin didn't already have a grind problem), the unnecessary and extreme nerf to brawler style, enemies having way more hyperarmor, and even removing the final cutscene of the main story. That last one in particular really burns me because it's such a unique and interesting cutscene. Not even Kenzan had a cutscene that cut from the Edo period to the modern day to show some of the legacy its protagonist left behind.
regarding Kiwami 3 i am up for it ... why not? i mean ofc i would prefer new games and Kiwami 3 is not necessary but i think 3,4,5 should get remakes at some point especialy now, when franchise is getting more popular like every month thats how i personally feel it

Listening to this while playing Kiwami, on chapter 7 and its been a casual replay for the past month or so. 3rd or 4th go around of the story.

HLA is one of my favorite Yakuza major side activities (I'm currently up to Yakuza 5 finale) mostly because of its story and the idea that some of these assassins were able to redeem themselves and hopefully live better results as a result of the HLA. Kinda sad it hasn't been brought up again after 3, but that can be said about a lot of stuff in Yakuza.
Best part of it to me was adding more lore to Kashiwagi with that and seeing the return of Arase

Another prequel, set even further back? A direct sequel to Y0? Something else entirely?

I had no idea you guys had a podcast, I'll definitely watch some more. Personally my biggest issue with Yakuza 3's combat isn't the blocking it's the lack of damage you deal.
If Kiwami 3 doesn't get announced at the Summit, I hope Judgment 3 takes its place. Granted, my gut feeling is that the live action show is gonna be the Summit's main topic.

For a add on capiagn, I do think Rikiya would probably be best just to get more screen time with him.
And I wouldn't mind them reworking how the orphanage stuff works. Restructuring when and where you spend time with the kids so that it's perhaps less intrusive, and the story flows better.

i think remakes do pose a danger in terms of replacing the original but in the case of a potential kiwami 3 its important to note that 3 is already on modern hardware and has a PC port. its not like the demons souls remake where it just kills any chance for the real game to get a proper rerelease only to replace it with a far worse version.

On the topic of filming in Japan (the Kabukicho area in this context) i think you have to ask every business owner on the said street for permission to film, so most movies/tv shows just create their own sets or do it illegally.

Personally I really like the combat in 3 obviously there are problems but I really enjoy playing with that era of kiriyus dragon of dojima style. It's the only game where you play the full game as kiriyu with this combat style in the current accepted play order.
And it feels like with the focus on the 0 styles dragon style has been neglected
There is one thing that I fear for is that if Kiwami 3 is actually a thing, there is a potential chance of spoiling few contents from 6 and the aftermath of IW right at the beginning or during the ending scene as 3 plays a huge part for the series due to how relevant those kids, Haruka and Haruto are in Okinawa (Or even Yuuta). And because of that, once the newcomers step into Kiwami 3 after beating Kiwami 2, those 6 and IW related Easter Eggs will spoil right away and kinda ruins the plot telling in some ways.
Again, it's just my personal thought :3

Remember how Gaiden ended? No spoilers, but there was kind of a cliffhanger for certain characters. I wouldn't be too surprised if this was the start of a new era in the "real time combat" side of the franchise: Replace "Yakuza" with "Daidoji" in the title, for example, and imagine that LAD Gaiden was "Daidoji 1" starring Kiryu. Next RGG game could be "Daidoji 2" starring can't-say-who to not spoil Gaiden for those who've not finished it (hint: the guy who ended up in a trunk)

One thing thats frustrating about the nagoshi fans narrative is that yokoyama has been in charge of yakuza for a long time, nagoshi was promoted to a c-suit position at sega in like 2012, nagoshi hadn't been resonsible for the day to day running of the series for like a decade before he left
RGG posted yet another Y3 image on their Instagram account at this point I'm just expecting the announcement
With the "Kiwami-fying" segment, specifically Kurohyou, how would they approach the password system in both games because of the KO strikes, "Tenma Brawler", and items? Would they implement a mailbox option in Tatsuya's house so he can obtain the scrolls for the strikes and in 2 would they just make unlocking "Tenma Brawler" into a substory similar to Muay Thai and Sumo? A major feature that comes into question would be the online battle, 1 v 1 OC creator, would RGG just cut them or keep them and allow people to fight, for Kurohyou one they'd keep the challenges for the custom character because it isn't online but for Kurohyou two there is just timed open world for your custom character but it's purely online. Granted, I could be overanalyzing this hypothetical of a Kurohyou remaster, but I don't want them to cut content again it's just minor stuff compared to the main game but still I don't want this one thing to up and be cut completely seeing as its still possible to do online through emulator.

A big thing im curious for if they kiwami-ify 3, what if they remix fly like the remixes of the final boss themes of k1 and k2? Thatd be interesting. We already have peak with fly, soar in ishin was goated as well, so how far can it go in the kiwami version?

seriously, it does NOT feel like 2 years since ishin kiwami. but that could be my fault for marathoning every mainline game and both judgments after gaiden. you have to make sure you brain is melted properly before playing infinite wealth.

if they do any additional majima saga style story for kiwami 3 it would be funny if it was just mine talking on the phone the whole time and you don't actually do anything else. Also I just have to mention I love strawberries especially in parfait form.
Judgment 3: Strawberry Parfait
I don't understand why people want Kiwami 3 so much, at least right now. I think RGG instead really needs to give their older titles some more respect. Yakuza 3 (Well, most of it anyway. The Japanese PS3 version is still the only complete version of it) is right there on every modern platform, easily accessible. Meanwhile RGG has done literally nothing with Kenzan since releasing it exclusively in Japan, exclusively for PS3, sixteen and a half years ago. On top of that there's Dead Souls, 1 & 2 HD, FOTNS, original Ishin, and both Kurohyou games, all still stuck on older hardware, and most untranslated (officially). I just wish the fanbase would be pushing for these games instead of a remake of a game that already has a pretty recent remaster.
I would also be concerned about the quality of another Kiwami game. Right now, Kiwami 1 and 2 basically serve as replacements for the original 1 and 2 given their lack of any modern ports, with the most recent one being almost twelve years old now. I think this is really bad because these remakes are just too different to serve as replacements. I would also argue that Ishin Kiwami is objectively worse than the original. Is there a single person who asked for the troop system to extend outside of battle dungeons and add these unfitting magical effects to them? And no, they are not simply "optional" given how bosses use them regardless of whether you have any equipped or not, and health upgrades from the skill tree are reduced because you're now expected to make use of the health bonuses that come with equipping these troop cards. There are also several changes to other things in the game that are just bafflingly terrible such as blacksmith costs being increased by an absurd amount and the frustrating RNG of the reworked seal system (as if the original Ishin didn't already have a grind problem), the unnecessary and extreme nerf to brawler style, enemies having way more hyperarmor, and even removing the final cutscene of the main story. That last one in particular really burns me because it's such a unique and interesting cutscene. Not even Kenzan had a cutscene that cut from the Edo period to the modern day to show some of the legacy its protagonist left behind.
regarding Kiwami 3 i am up for it ... why not? i mean ofc i would prefer new games and Kiwami 3 is not necessary but i think 3,4,5 should get remakes at some point especialy now, when franchise is getting more popular like every month thats how i personally feel it
