Sinn U50 Review - Better than the U1?

  • This is a new for 2020 model called the U50. It is 3mm smaller than the flagship diver from Sinn, the U1. Is it a better purchase? Does it feel too small? Is the bezel action and lume improved? Is full tegimenting worth the premium? I touch on all these points in this presentation. Thank you to Dail for making this video happen!
    What would you pick? The new U50? Or the Oris Lake Baikal?

    Great review. At 11.5mm thickness this U-50 makes a really strong case for itself. There aren’t many divers around with that skinniness.

    I love my Sinn 556, it’s probably the favorite I own. Bought it second hand in excellent, almost new, condition under $800 and at that price it definitely feels like an amazing value. As a Sinn fanboy it pains me to say that if they keep rising their prices they will price themselves out. I’ve been very intrigued y the U50 since its announcement, but not paying $3,000 (assume with taxes) for it. Watch should be $2,000 IMO. I’ll have to wait.

      I agree. Sinn are not the good value they once were. I currently have an 856S which I've owned for 2 years. I owned a U2 for 11 years (sold in 2017). Sadly, I sold a EZM8 SDR which was good value when new. The Sinn Model T2 was also good value here in Europe before it was discontinued.

    I love that Sinn managed to transport the same ethos from the U1 into the U50, opening Sinn dive watch ownership up to a much wider audience.
    I have had my U1 for 7 years now, and still absolutely love it.
    I have never had any issues with the clasps, both on the metal bracelet or on the rubber strap.
    But a glidelock-type clasp would definitely be a nice addition.
    I see that some people object to the price increase, but bear in mind that this is a tool watch with proven credentials which is only now arriving at a price point where it should have been all along.
    This is a watch to wear for the next 50 years, not a trendy fashion accessory.

      Great to hear that! I'm more convinced in buying one rite now! I have been looking at some longines and oris watches too but they seem to be more on the trendy fashion side as u mentioned. I think the U50 would fit me perfectly since I am oftern outdoors in the woods and I want to use the watch everyday and not need to leave it at home. Would you recommend the U1 over the U50 ? :)

      I would try them both. I love chunky watches, so the U1 is my tool watch of choice!
      But you need a slightly larger shirt cuff on you watch arm. 😊
      Seriously, few can tell then difference visually.
      It is down to which one feels better sitting on your wrist.

    • @tangosierra911
      @tangosierra911 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@HiltonFen
      The U1 is on the heavier side, it feels like a gold watch in terms of weight.
      I love heavy watches, I would never get a carbon watch, for instance.
      It is a welcome heft on the silicone strap, and a serious heft on the metal bracelet.
      I switch between the two regularly. The metal bracelet is one of the most comfortable bracelets on the market.
      I bought the tegimented version, but I do not see a difference between the normal submarine steel and the tegimented steel.
      I bought the grey and black bezels and the black, red and metal bracelets.

    I wanted a real tool watch. I looked at both the U1 & U50 (and many other brands) Just this week I purchased a used (2 years) all papers, box, warranty card, etc... U1, full tegemented, black for $1,700.00. I have a 7 3/4 write so the size isn't an issue. But, it is a heavy thing, even on the silicone strap. So take that into consideration when choosing. I went with the U1 because I do need a very robust and rugged watch for my work. And frankly, the U1 just has something to it. It's like.... industrial sexy. It's the real thing. The U1 is like the old Humvee truck & the U50 is the GM's lightweight version the Hummer. Either is tough enough to handle anything you throw at them. I think which you pick it comes down to why you're wearing it. Finally: a nice used U1 at a reasonable price is getting to be a tough find. I spent months. Definitely a bit of a cult piece now. But I am very very happy!

It is certainly one of, if not the toughest dive watch available on the market and Sinn quality is outstanding. Yes, the pricing is coming up but I think the value is still there with all of the amazing tech they've worked into time piece. As far as the choice between Oris vs Sinn.. there's no question I would take the Sinn 10 out of 10 times. Get one!!

    Great review Bruce. I have my U 50 T for 1 month. And I own a Sinn 856 b uhr teg bracelet for 3 an 1/2 years. Watch bracelet are durable as ever. Sinn watches are tools to wear without compromise. Clasp could be better yes but a thick clasp would not blend on the wrist wearing the watch. Sinn watches and there technology are not to be down played lov them plus captive bezels. Sinn watches and the brand are for people who keep them and not flippers. I have the U1 SE, I honestly regret it and can't believe how much I spent it on it. Sinn is officially overpriced as far as I'm concerned. They are now charging a premium for their brand, but the value doesn't feel there anymore for me, particularly this model. Not excited about how much I'll lose reselling it either, ha! I spent 3k, and that's so close to Tudor territory. I think Damasko gives you much more, and feels to me to be of higher quality.

    • @stefanlazaralexandru
      @stefanlazaralexandru 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes and no at the same time. Some elements of Sinn watches are completely outdated (i.e. the clasp, most movements), while others are still a competitive advantage, that no other brand offers (i.e. AR dehumidifier, Diapal escapement). Just about every Tudor watch has more expensive alternatives out there, which are superior on almost every level. You can rarely say the same about Sinn watches.

    • @simonbailey2151
      @simonbailey2151 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@stefanlazaralexandru Very true, but the U1 has precisely ZERO of those cool features you describe hahaha. That's my point. There watches that sell for around 1k are still good value. • @Nefville
      @Nefville 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never thought about it but when you compare it to a Damasko you might have a point and when you compare it to an Archimede you absolutely definitely have a point. You can get a "tegimented" (hardened) Archimede for less than a grand with a similar movement and made in Germany.

    • @jmount411
      @jmount411 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes Sinn is expensive and the value really isn't totally there as much as it used to be. Seiko raised their prices and is not the value proposition they used to be either. The 5KX is higher priced and less features than the old SKX. Doxa does the same thing and sells a ETA based diver for almost 3k. At least with Sinn your still getting a really nice well finished accurate watch. Mine all have been accurate. Their customer service is wonderful too. Sinn is also a small company compared to others so production costs are probably high. Yeah you can buy other watches for the same price with a better movement like a Tudor. As far as movements i mean whats more tool watch than a ETA/Sellita. Reliable, accurate, easy to service. The technology that they use is not used in many other brands either. Damasko does make a nice watch. I bought a DC80 and i had to pay almost 700 extra dollars to get it on the bracelet. So the bracelet was almost 1/3 the cost of a 3k watch. I don't see value there either. Sinn and Damasko use the same technology because im pretty sure Mark at Long Island Watch mentioned that Damasko does the tegimenting of the cases and bracelets for Sinn. Sinn offers it at a lower price than Damasko. Yeah it sucks you cant get a Sinn for 1k anymore but i mean any of the similar brands did the same thing. Oris big crown pro-pilot used to sell new for 800 now they are around 1300-1400 and a Sinn 104 blows that watch away comparing apples to apples.

    I'm sad the Oris is on it's last days here. I personally do want to add the "perfect" German watch to my collection, and since Glasshütte is out of my price range, i''ll go with one Sinn or another at one point. Or damasko. I do think the small flaws you highlighted on this one would rule it out at that price point, but you'll decide. Great video as always

That being said I just purchased a Damasko DA46 on black leather strap for 1400USd. I like the sinn but Id feel way more comfortable spending around 1800 for it on the bracelet .

    the clasp does seem a bit underwhelming. However, I'm starting to appreciate the more simpler/minimalist clasps as I find they're more comfortable that the "over engineered" ones. I own a sub and love the glidelock - a bit bulky though. I also own the SKX and honestly, the minimal clasp is SO comfortable. Definitely some tradeoffs.

    Nice job on this review Bruce. Perhaps it’s just my eyes, but after stopping the video multiple times and looking intently at the hour and minute hands, it appears to me that the red and white colorway of the hands look as if they are painted on the hour and minute hands and not in a straight line. It almost looks jagged where the red and white intersect on the hands. (See minutes: 3:51, 4:59 and 10:18). Do you notice this as well, or is it a function of poor eyesight on my part?...Thanks...Ed

    The U50 is a really rugged dive, tool watch, kind of akin to the Tudor Pelagos. It looks tough, fit for purpose. I would choose it over the Oris. Better still, if I had your three watch collection I'd hang tough on another watch full stop. Let's be honest, each of those is killer!

    I want the U1 w/the thinner case... maybe call it the U1.5 and use the SW300 vs the SW200 movement. I'm afraid my 8" wrist would just make the U50 look too small. I wear my 40mm Rolex Sub almost daily and it's near the perfect size. Just want something more 'beatable' but yet still 'wearable' ... 14.5mm thick for the U1 may be too chunky for my liking.

    Great tool watch and in my opinion a mark up on the U1, which was on my hit list. The price point is definitely a concern however. For similar price you can get a Tudor 58 or PO1 for similar money but with much better finishing with a superior movement. Pity, because I think it would stop me from a purchase.

      A better comparison is the non tegimented version which $2500. Non of Tudors watches have the hardness of these. But with comparable steel the Tudor is more than 1k more, which makes up for the finishing differences

    I want to love the U50, but for me it seems disproportionately weird. Rather than shrink everything down, then have used the same hands and the bezel is the same thickness as the U1. If the bezel had shrunk proportionately as well as the hands, I think it would have had better balance.
    For these reasons, the U1 is still my preference.

  • @WRjockey
    @WRjockey 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have not watched your video, but I can still answer your question: no, it's not better than the U1. Just different. Whether it's more suited to a specific person than the U1 will depend on their wrist size and preferences about watch size. It has 500m less WR if I'm not mistaken. No, it's not better.
