    A lot of DJ's do those annoying hand movements to make them appear that they're doing something with the knobs. This is totally unnecessary.

      Count me in, as well. Not mentioning how stupid it looks. If you pay attention carefully, there are moments where he clearly doesn't even touch the knobs. And he has some sick scratching skills, so it's a shame that he thinks it's necessary to resort to that knob finicking that EDM DJs love to do.

    I have been a dj for over 30 years, and am in amazement at all of the dislikes that this video has gotten. There's a lot of things that someone who is NOT a dj wouldn't understand about the knobs and buttons that he is using. As for the comments about this not being acceptable at a wedding.... after all of the formalities are done, a wedding reception IS still basically a party...... your job is to keep the party going..... you play to the crowd, if that's what they want to hear, if it keeps them jumping do it! No one wants to chicken dance and macarena all night. That's why legitimate dj's get most of the business. Develop YOUR skills, instead of bashing others. For those hating on this video..... hating is probably the ONLY skill you have. Remember, no one hates on the person that looses.

    The guys posting negative comments crack me up! I go to their channel thinking I am going to see dj am mixing skills and they don't have any videos! They put Bill down, but they them selves have no videos of how to mix properly. Nor any videos of themselves mixing at all! Lol. If you gonna post negative remarks have video to back it up! Keep it up bill! Keep rockin' on the 1200's -Vinyl Fo' Life

      Thanks Lou!! I agree i touched the knobs too much, but the audio is so poor because i just used the mic on the camera, that it doesn't sound like I am even adjusting any levels. Plus I did this on the first take, and I know I am no DJ AM, but c'mon.. where are these haters videos? Thanks for the comment!

    He means well but watching the video was awkward and i'm stunned. My mind is motionless , unlike his arms. I still can't process what i've just seen. Unfortunately it's not great viewing for educational purposes. The title "How to mix songs" falls short of accurate but again , he means well. His confidence far outweighs his ability. He needs to watch and share his tutorials before he uploads them. Mr Bara , i hope you read your comments and learn from them. All Dj's are always learning. Not all the dislikes are haters , many i guess are from viewers that just disliked the tutorial. Wish you the best

    Hi Bill. If you’re calling this a “how to” video, it would help if you actually explained some of the fundamentals that go into creating proper transitions.
    You have to understand that a lot of people will click on this video because they still need to learn the techniques, so they’re not familiar with counting beats, bars or phrases and they don’t know how to work the eq, etc.
    The rest of the people clicking on this video are DJs who are curious to hear another DJ’s perspective and style, and they will be critical when someone starts the video by saying he will always mix properly if you hire him ;)

    • @doubleaspect
      @doubleaspect 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DJ TLM, you keep uploading your videos, because they're informative, professional and fun. You're too good to react to this pseudo-hip hop charade that this gentleman thought would be good to play at a wedding.

    After reading some of these comments I have come the conclusion that almost all DJ's, Wana-be DJ's, Professional Dj's, and anyone in-between just want to Bash, Hate, Criticize, and just say plain stupid things!! Not just on this video, but everywhere! Why can't we all get along?!?!? We all work in the same "industry". If you have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all. Jealousy is all I see. I bet people out there would laugh at the way you mix & scratch if you get the guts to post a video of yourself. Let's help each other! The sun shines on everyone!

      No other group of people hate on each other as much as DJ's. I stay away from online DJ forums now because of it. I'm much happier DJ'ing without talking to other DJ's these days, most are full of themselves, self-important, and overly sensitive.

    I've been a DJ for eight years, and in business for myself three. I've done sixty weddings in the past two years, and about 200 all together. I mix at weddings, and some of my "competitors" hire me as a subcontractor. None of their guys mix.
    They do have customers request mixing DJ's or "a nightclub feel". I'm not as "jazz hands" or "flashy" as you when I mix, but to those commenting, yes, there are times and crowds when scratching and hop-hop is perfectly acceptable and appropriate at weddings.
    You did fine. It was a little choppy, but I know there is a difference when recording live vs just doing a how-to in the studio. Also, any mistakes are more noticeable to armchair quarterbacks who are not on the dance floor.
    I need to post some videos too. I have slow internet, so it takes forever to upload even small videos.

    ive been djing for 25 years and have done prob 500 plus weddings. this type of mixing dont fly in weddings because crowd is mixed and every second they are requesting a different song (from rock, country, to soca in next song). also, they will hate you if you only play 1 min of their songs. oh yeah throw in love songs there too. lots of oldies want slow dance. but you are a good mixer for a club dj.

    • @DJBillBara

    wow, the fucking hate in our Dj world is epic, everyone slams another Dj to make themselves appear as if they are the shit. I'll tell you what, if I see a young Dj do this, I'll shake their mutherfucking hand at the end because a lot of what I see these days are nothing but push play Dj's playing premixed dance music off their ipads and just tweaking in mixer effects during the gig as if they are standing up their doin something.

    • @nohaproduction7059
      @nohaproduction7059 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Bob Billings So true man. When I decided to be a DJ it was because I love music and the idea of somehow giving the energy to the crowd on party or some event was just awesome. Because I'm beginner and not really wealthy :D I have bought Pioneer DDJ SB2 and a laptop and started to watch elaskin & DJ TLM tutorials. BUT! (not butt) one thing really discourages me from DJing is the incredible amount of hate among DJs. And a few people on parties bitching about what kind of music you play etc. But all that hate.... maaaan.

  • @musicrocksinaustin
    @musicrocksinaustin 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    There is a huge difference between a wedding DJ and a club DJ = Wedding DJs make WAY more money per gig simply because they CAN charge more for events like corporate gigs and weddings, those events are guaranteed money, unlike bars that rely on people for alcohol sales and then fuck you if the bar didn't make much that night. Of all places the bars and clubs usually are making a killing off of alcohol sales (and i mean the really profitable bars) still do not want to pay DJs anymore than $250-$350 per night for a 4 hour set. And let's face it, in order to stay just DJing as your profession...i'm sure most of these DJs have to resort to taking these Wedding gigs to pay the bills so they can focus on their "craft". I'm sure most though get stuck being a "wedding DJ" because it really is so hard making it top in your city or top in the music industry.

  • @SynthesisEnt

    Wow. Any fool can complain, criticize, and condemn. And most do. All these alleged DJ's are quick to tear your work down but not one of them offered up any constructive comments. What's wrong with them! Personally I think that mix would be great at a club and towards the end of a night at a wedding. So maybe you move your hands too much. As long as your goal is to make the B&G the focus of attention rather than yourself, who cares? I liked this video a lot. I can always learn something.

    • @gatsbee7
      @gatsbee7 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That mix would not be great at a club, wedding, birthday party, school dance, bar mitzvah, funeral, etc. If you learned something from this video, I would be really amazed. Besides learning what NOT to do. The size of this guy's head is much greater than the quality of his DJ skills. He needs a lesson in humility more than anything. Ever seen a real DJ act a fool like that? He was like the village idiot looking for attention. Typical corny-ass wedding DJ acting like a game show host. If you want to learn something, check out Grandmaster Flash, Jazzy Jeff, or countless other old school DJs. None of them acted like an arrogant ass-clown like this guy. People with skills don't need to brag or slap the shit out of the mixer board pretending to perform some epic mix. Braggers talk....those with talent just do. True talent and skills never need to be bragged about so ridiculously.

    Man I've been a DJ for over 35 years starting as a battle DJ. I understand completely what this dude is FEELING. To be honest he is not doing anything with them knobs or faders when the tracks are mixing, he is doing (Feeling) what's called a DJ GROOVE. As the tracks are mixing on point, he is hand grooving with the mix. Although I don't use this technique, many DJ's professional and armature feel out their mix. May look silly and un-called for, but this method helps some DJ's when mixing.

    Well I must say as a professional DJ myself he's better than most out there as far as mixing goes! Plus technique 1200's isn't the easiest gear to mix on either. He may not be some crazy DMC battle DJ like Jazzy Jeff or Craze but as a mobile DJ that's not even necessary to be that skilled. I would say his mixing skills are on point and his music selection is pretty diverse which in my opinion every pro DJ should already know how to do. The only thing I can't judge him on by this video is his ability to read and entertain an audience because at the end of the day that's what really matters in this business!

    Dude,
    Could really use your advice with mixing 80's songs that don't easily join together or they might have signature endings like love shack or grease mega mix where they need to be played to the end cause people like to sing along. I find I run into a lot of weddings where people don't want club or dance mixes and just want to hear the radio edits but in order to get from 1 song to another I simply fade them like your first example. Thank you Bill

    I read a comment below that mentioned this DJ was missing one of his fader knobs. Post editing is crucial especially when you do not property speak correctly. Bob Vick wedding djs are sad in general. I have been to countless weddings just like any other person. djBOB 365 You're right, it's about song choice totally! It's about the girly scream you get when you hit play on the right song. People are not there to hear you stuff around with their requested song. Bill Bara, I think you're very talented and in your circles and dance parties this would work well but it's not something that I do much, I tend to talk to the crowd, become familiar, joke with them, take requests, dance and have fun. This has kept me employed for 20 years, working in 5 star venues within the corporate sector. I'm 40, look like I'm in my 30s and feel like I'm 21. No plans on stopping!!
      k11yle I think you're at the party for the wrong reasons. Go and hang out at nightclubs.

      Ive been DJing for over 15 years started on tables and worked my way up to DVS. I currently use a NS7II w Serato DJ. Yes it is true that technology has made it easier for people to get into the game... but one thing always shows out is the ones who can't hack it ( Paris Hilton, David Guetta etc) to ones who actually use the gear and create wonderful and creative mixes..

  • @Fre3flyOfficial

    Seriously...I don't get it! People will hate & dislike someone that's using a console and the Sync button, but they also hate & dislike on someone who's actually beatmatching and using vinyl.
    And it's not even "4 on the floor" house music, which is easy to beatmatch, making this even more difficult.

    This video does not show how to properly beat match. How about talking about throwing it in on the one, knowing your bars,beats , phrases, and using intros or instrumentals to blend the mix together. Also I know you don't need the headphones especially if you know the songs and bpms by heart...but it's a good tool to learn how to mix with your ears and not stare at the screen. You like to touch the up faders a lot and it would be nice if they did do something, makes you look busy though.

      hes upfading without upfading where he would usually upfade while wearing headphones. He's just running everything max to begin with other than when general cueing and scratching.. When I'm dicking around at home I just run the master sometimes.

      joshmdmd thanks bud but I'm just giving constructive criticism. Not to mention that he stated that everyone who made a comment he didn't like does not have any videos posted. I do however.
      how are you going to show us how to mix when he didn't really explain the fundamentals? just saying and not hatting

  • @zohanzohanable

    1- Djs use headphone
    2- Djs are humble
    3- Djs can play music without staring at a computer
    4- Djs talk about music and dont give lessons
    5- Dancefloor dance because they like a song, not because of your whatsoever skills
    6- You are missing a knob on Channel 1.
    But yea, you are still a DJ. I just prefer jukeboxes sorry.

    I appreciate what he was trying to do here, but it was hard and uncomfortable for me to watch. His body language is very erratic and clumsy looking. Not smooth. Several of his transitions were also not smooth. I can tell he does have some skills though. Maybe he was just nervous because he was on camera. I don't know.

    Aaawww, chucks. I was hoping for a pop music tutorial. I thought surely wedding DJ's don't get many requests for hiphop. But nope, this is hiphop again, like most other tutorials out there.
    Most weddings I've been at has played either top 40 or classic pop, which is what I have problems mixing right now.
    Don't get me wrong, it's a great tutorial, just not what I was looking for :P

  • @ExtremeMannAdventure

    The fundamentals are fine, but how often do you dJ a wedding playing Old School Hip Hop all Evening? The challenge of a wedding is the complete mix of different music types and my ability to raise the energy and atmosphere, rather than me scratching ability or whether I can beat match etc.
    I will on occasion mix, playing house or some rnb etc. But the good old crossfade in and out is still used most the time.

    Thanks for posting your video. I totally understand your intention, but people at a wedding couldn't care less about beat matching and fancy hand movements. They care about getting drunk and dancing to mainstream radio hits under a bunch of pretty lights.

      @phillysportsmedia2825 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly why I wouldn't choose you as a wedding dj. If you just played mainstream music your wedding will suck your not reading the crowd at all. But hey you know Mr mainstream.

    • @kylestewart5191
      @kylestewart5191 ปีที่แล้ว

      i agree. when you have a mix crowd and grandma asks for love song that throws off your whole beat matching mixing....then you start beat matching again and uncle asks for country.....u get my point. u cant do this club type mixing 1 min per song in a wedding

  • @NeilSmithMusic
    @NeilSmithMusic 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've had great success just playing popular music the guests want to dance to. I used to beat match. Now I don't even bother. I more consider the type of song to play next and what might work well to take things from upbeat to ballad, etc. But then, the people seeking a club style dj won't usually consider me. Btw, doing tricks at the beginning of Don't Stop Believing is a crime. The song just starting by itself is so powerful and will instantly draw old and young alike to the floor.

    • @coastben
      @coastben 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Let me tell you something Paul! Firstly, you are correct, they don't need to. However, good Weddings/Party DJ's do mix like "proper" club DJ's. In fact, let me fill you in on something. A good wedding DJ is far superior in many many ways than any "proper" club DJ. I play at weddings on the weekends and in major clubs during the week. I have for over 10 years. You ask any Club DJ to try and mix music that was made in the 70's, 80's and 90's. The beats aren't consistant, sound quality is shit, etc etc. THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO... The beats are all the same sample in just about every song, so they don't even have to worry about weird bassline issues. Club DJ's these days either press the "sync", set up the bpm in the mixer, or some of the really really good one's even use the pitch fader. Good Weddings DJ's can do all of this and deal with people at the same time, find randomly requested songs, keep to a good volume level, and are aware of time - simultaneously. Good Luck with Life mate :-)
      PS. DJ's often remove fader knobs for a reason. That's why they are not glued on and come off easily. It helps them organize stuff on the mixer. But you should know that...

    I'm a club DJ, and I play weddings sometimes.I pride myself and sell my product as not being some shitty wedding DJ (most).I don't play the song for its entirety, and simply fade.I cut, scratch, rock doubles,and stay funky all night.All of my wedding business has been through word of mouth referrals, as I usually play clubs.I beg to differ.Today when I see people getting married, they don't want to hear a song for 5 minutes,they want someone who can actually mix, not like most wedding DJs..MOST.

    If you were just practicing I would not have commented,but as an instructional for how to transition correctly you were not thought close. Besides not mixing by song structure, it wasn't that smooth at all. Speeding up a song live as you did wasn't good either. So as an instructional I give this an F. However, I give your skills a C, because I see your promise and that you only need some easy to learn improvements to perform your demo correctly. Kudo's for having the courage to try,

    Club and a wedding a way different. I do both and would much rather play in a club but the money is in weddings if your in it for the business. Due to wedding and everything that is going on I usually don't do anymore than a baby scratch. I have had some events in the past where I went off at a wedding like I was in the club and scratching everything in crazy and they were not looking for that. As a Dj you don't want to fade in and fade out. Im hired because your a professional. The club is the no limit zone. Do whatever the fuck you want and know how to control the flow of money. Play music to keep ppl on the floor but make sure they also go and get beer. This was a good video on mixing into to some songs for a wedding. I usually refrain from using the backspin as well.. It tends to give some weird looks.... But you did your thing.

    Scratch transitions are not bad at all! I think I would be pretty happy if this guy was a DJ at a wedding, I've seen a lot worse. Most mobile DJs know that you're playing for 150+ random friends and family members with different taste. You can't beat match all night so I do fade out sometimes with delays or other effects. Pauses are fine; that's when you should pick up a mic and be engaging.
