Just an FYI. Stained glass artist here- any time you use copper foil, after apply it, you need to use a bone folder or a find to go around the foil and firmly rub all the surfaces to make sure it’s well adhered. If you don’t, while soldering the foil tape can pull away from your tile. If it does pull away, the solder edges can get really sharp. I’ve cut myself quite badly when I didn’t get it adhered well. Really cute idea for up cycling and I hope my suggestion helps.
This was a great video. I have done a lot of microscope slide pendants in the past. I even have the third hand but didn't know how to use it with the jump ring. Thanks so much. I mostly quit making them because I hated trying to solder the jump rings on. Maybe I will try it again for Christmas!
Robin Carr I could never do it without the 3rd hand, I am not steady enough. I even found one with a light and soldering iron holder but it seems tippy
That is beautiful! I would wear those in a heartbeat. I have never used a soldering iron in my life so I doubt that I could even do something like this.
Hi Lindsay. So i experimented and found several possible reasons that all seem to involve the blending solution. When pre-cleaning the tile the solution leaves a film that does easily come off like the alcohol does, also there is a solution to ink ratio issue and order of application effect. I feel like a scientist but one without the helpful background ☺ Thanks again for your help and all your wonderful tutorials. Your my craft GURU !
No just a solder iron for both electronics and stained glass. the one you used on the video has a real small tip mine don't and when I did soldering at work it was a larger tip also. My husband has a torch kind. It is used for pipes.
Hi Lindsey I’ve just been making tile jewellery and I wire wrapped my own bales and was very pleased with what I made can you do more jewellery I’m going to college in September to do an exam in jewellery making I’m 63 and not giving up on my crafting thank Wendy xx 😘
I love this idea...pretty soon my work table will be covered with different projects...my craft table is about 4x5 feet in size....time to break out my other table with is 2.5 feet by 4.5 feet.......just realized size matters with crafting tables....
So pretty! I think I'll leave this one for you to do! Lol that sort of stuff makes me very nervous! I do love those inks and the awesome effects you got with them! Tfs!
lisamr40 soldering does take practice to get it right the first time but it is like riding a bike after that:) The iron is super hot,so you must be cautious:)
Great technique! I'm like the others, I would have to do something to cover up the back of it, likely some cardstock glued on. I have a soldering iron but I've not had success with it but maybe I'll watch your other video and give it another try.
SO QUICK BUT GREAT !!!! gonna try to do this......after the paint dries can you use mod podge or clear nail polish to add more gloss and help hold color
That looks pretty cool to make. I have all the equipment that I bought after a soldering class, but have not taken it out of the package. Naughty me. I agree with Kristen K. The back side of the tile does not appeal to me. Maybe if it was smooth it would be better, but I would like a more finished look. Any ideas?
Could you decorate the backside with a molding paste or caulk of some kind? Maybe add some through a stencil with small lines? That way both sides are attractive. I kinda like the white tile. Shabby colors :) Also, how would you add embellishments to the tile i.e. buttons or metal clock face etc.? Would a good quality gel matte medium hold up? Thanks so much, Lindsey, for your awesome ideas! Like so many of your vids, this one has my mind racing!!!
Can you tell me what you call that tool you used to hold the tile while soldering? Looks like there is a magnifier on it also. Thank you for your time, and I just love your work.
neat idea...for those concerned about the back, couldn't you just cover the back with more adhesive copper foil, use flux and tin the back lightly with solder?
I love this idea too...I am a former glass artist so its a project I would enjoy. Where do you find the little stand that you clipped the items to for soldering? That was very cool.?
Thanks for the video! My boyfriend brought me home a bunch of these little tiles from a job site knowing that I tell him to bring any scraps home he can for my projects, and this is exactly what I was thinking of doing with them. I don't think mine are rounded on the corners though, do you know how I could sand them?
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Actually, you'd be surprised at the tools I have, since I love to be handy myself, but sadly, that isn't one of the things I have and neither does he. I'm sure it must have to be like a tile saw and water may have to be involved with it. I looked into a tile saw when I was thinking about dichroic (sp?) glass but never actually got one.
Do you know how to take a piece (say a tile or gemstone or something tile sized like here) and embed a smaller piece of metal into it? say a smaller pewter pendant charm inlaid onto a larger gemstone?
Right! Using bezels with no fancy border is easy to use . you just place the bead or the tile into it after applying the glue. But the bezels which have a secured designed border, do we bend the metal put the tile and then make it straight again?
I really can't figure out what im doing wrong. Im using jewelry solder, flux, im putting the bead on the iron and when i apply it it simply doesn't. Best i can do is get a single bead. Not at all what i want. Im just trying to coat the edges. Is it my cheap soldering iron?
Love the outcome but I will have to be honest that the unfinished back bothers me. If I did this maybe a bit of patterned or plain cardstock on the back covered in mod podge, but would I do that before or after the soldering?
Another great tutorial Lindsay, thank you. These are beautiful!! I don't think I ever saw that silver alcohol ink before, I'll definitely be on the lookout for that. Question, did you seal that top layer of the tile? I'd be concerned that the ink would scratch off if I didn't seal it. :o)
MegaPraiseHim I did not but you are right a coat of Krylon Triple Thick glaze would do the trick. I don't think it would scratch off as much as wear off over time.
Awesome video! Can you tell me why my "Bead Landing" soldering kit from Michael's doesn't seem to work at all? I've heard it might be bad soldering flux... Have you heard anything about this? Thanks so much! :)
Chad Bear I don't know this product and I do not live near a Micheals. Is it a butane torch or soldering iron? Maybe it does not get hot enough? I do not think flux can go bad, I've had mine for years from the hardware store. maybe the copper tape is not copper, just decorative, I have come across that before.
Could it also be the type of metal the jump ring is made of? Lindsay, what types of metal will the solder stick to? I know silver works, but some things are make of nickel, brass, aluminum etc. Love the flux you are using. Mine is liquid and drips - yours stays put! Thanks. Paula
great tutorial maybe slow down a little bit for people with learning difficulties. I use to speak really fast in my speeches but learned to slow down so everyone could grab what I was saying. cool idea. I will share this with my students.namaste
Thank u sooooo much ! HELP PLZ. !!! I started working with these inks and larger tiles, everything was great, then today I started a project and every tile dried dull . I didn't do any thing different. Now I'm freaking out !
😊 The tiles are from the same batch, from Lowes. I could spray them but they are seriously chalky looking. My other tiles worked perfectly and still look awesome. I have a lot of projects I was hoping to switch over and use this as my main medium. I need to know why this happened so I can prevent this in the future.
Lulu Island were the tiles cold, like you just brought them inside and started working on them before they heated up to room temp? There could be condensation forming when you put on the ink and it got trapped causing a hazy look. Did you wipe them with alcohol first, that helps the ink adhere and cleans off dust and grime.
No, it was daytime and I live on Maui. I left a follow up comment that I think it was mostly due to the blending solution and my lack of experience with it. I worked on it all day and I'm close to my original results. Fingers crossed because I'm not giving up, I love the look of these tiles when done right. I'm purchasing some AI instructional cd's and joining the forums. Thanks again Lindsay, you have helped me with numerous projects now. Wish I could repay you. If you get out to Maui look me up 😊
amazing! you make precious things out of actually "nothing:!! I would like to buy the colours for the tiles but how i ask for them? can you please tell me?

The necklaces are beautiful, Lindsay. Something new to do with my alcohol inks. Thanks!!!!

I love all your videos.....you teach me how to do cool things and make it sooo easy. Keep em coming sister!!!
I love this idea! I have done both kinds of soldering and they are basically the same. Thank you so much!
Jeanie Gregory Do you mean the torch kind? I have not tried it.
No just a solder iron for both electronics and stained glass. the one you used on the video has a real small tip mine don't and when I did soldering at work it was a larger tip also. My husband has a torch kind. It is used for pipes.

This was an amazing explanation I learned so much. Thank you!
🙆 your the best crafter ever! I love your vids💁
Wow great work
Super nice and pretty!
Very cool. I haven't heard "don't burn your hands off!" So, that was nice :)
I love the way the jewelry looks, but I will leave the soldering to you :) TFS ~ Pat
Those look so cool!!
Really great little tiles. Tfs.

Awesome! a new project to try
I love that and will try it😇😇😇
How on earth do you know to do all this stuff? Amazing! Crafters totally rock.
Love it!
Thank you
SO QUICK BUT GREAT !!!! gonna try to do this......after the paint dries can you use mod podge or clear nail polish to add more gloss and help hold color
+roxanne1616 sure!
I wonder the same!

Gigi Black I think maybe gluing on black felt. I would feel nice too.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich That's all I could come up with too. Thanks for all your fun projects.
Could you decorate the backside with a molding paste or caulk of some kind? Maybe add some through a stencil with small lines? That way both sides are attractive. I kinda like the white tile. What alcohol inks did you use for this video
Where can I get the tiles?
I notice that some brands of lead free solder don't melt. Do you have a link to the kind you use and the flux too?
Sorry, I don't. I dont remember the brand
Can you tell me what you call that tool you used to hold the tile while soldering? Looks like there is a magnifier on it also. Thank you for your time, and I just love your work.
hope this helps!

Hi I try to do this but it dose not stick to the coper I don’t know what I am doing wrong can u help me please
How does the ink hold up on the tile? Would it be better if there was an apoxy or diamond glaze over it?
Robin Rini McFarlane it holds up well:)
Thanks for the video! My boyfriend brought me home a bunch of these little tiles from a job site knowing that I tell him to bring any scraps home he can for my projects, and this is exactly what I was thinking of doing with them. I don't think mine are rounded on the corners though, do you know how I could sand them?
Lisa Waitt you could grind them if your man has a tile grinder.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Actually, you'd be surprised at the tools I have, since I love to be handy myself, but sadly, that isn't one of the things I have and neither does he. I'm sure it must have to be like a tile saw and water may have to be involved with it. I looked into a tile saw when I was thinking about dichroic (sp?) glass but never actually got one.
Lisa Waitt if they're glass tiles, use your dremel tool with the grinding wheel. Heck, even if they're not glass, try it anyway. ha :D
Lisa Waitt Do you have a dremel? That would work very well.
Viki Banaszak Yes, I do. Great idea! Thanks!
It's been almost 5 years now since this video. Are you still using this product? What do you think about the product now compared to then?
Do you know how to take a piece (say a tile or gemstone or something tile sized like here) and embed a smaller piece of metal into it? say a smaller pewter pendant charm inlaid onto a larger gemstone?
I would use a jewelers glue/cement or E600. Try it on some costume jewelry first to practise the technique
If I get a bezel according to the size of the tile and wish to set this on the bezel (brass or silver), how would I do that? Just hot glue?
Rukmini Majumdar I would use a stronger glue like epoxy
Right! Using bezels with no fancy border is easy to use . you just place the bead or the tile into it after applying the glue. But the bezels which have a secured designed border, do we bend the metal put the tile and then make it straight again?
Will the alcohol ink cover copper foil tape
yes
Hi Lindsay where can i find the tile?
+Speedy9765 it was from a home improvement store

paulage1art steel and copper work, aluminum will not.

PRIESTESSHEAVEN GMT ..i feel the same way..as I get older I find fast speaking is hard to follow
What kind of solder?
+Lainey Cole lead free
Sorry... Is the metallic silver also alcohol ink?
whichcraftartstudios yes, they come in a 2 pack with gold and silver and they are called Mixatives and they are Tim Holtz Adirondack inks by Ranger
Thank you.

Will really hot glue work instead of soldering?
Rukmini Majumdar I don't think it will be strong enough
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Instead of a coat of Krylon triple thick glaze, will Liquitex gloss acrylic varnish do?
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich And seal it indefinitely ?
Rukmini Majumdar that should work:)
Let's hope the paint won't wear or chip of. Too nervous
nice! wish you would slow down when giving instructions. thanks in advance
love it but to much and dangerous for me.
I love you, can you please just randomly shout it my name? Plzz❤️
amazing! you make precious things out of actually "nothing:!! I would like to buy the colours for the tiles but how i ask for them? can you please tell me?
go to any art/craft store and ask for Alcohol Inks
