I look forward to hearing what he decided to do and if it gets out on the water 😊

Thanks Melissa, he has decided to sell it and use the money to buy the boat he wants. Will be difficult to sell with a bad transom. I would not be suprised if he end up not selling and doing the repairs so it’s a solid boat to sell

Have to agree, they also took too long to recognize and take care of issues and tried to cover them up. What do you believe was the main design flaw that caused these issues?

@@OutboardDad the charging system didn’t cool and lack of oxygen sensor caused improper fuel mixture causing the spark plugs to foul in about 20 hours

Interesting how some lasted and some tricks people learned to get as many hours as they could out of them. Thank you for the feedback

Going on 54 years as an outboard mechanic and repair shop owner. I was service manager for Stratos and a half dozen other brands in central Florida when FICHT came out. I see below a few hinting at these being bad. THEY ARE CORRECT. These ARE the engines that bankrupted OMC. They are just a bad design and there will be a reason these have not run on a few years. It is not about available parts. It is about the fact that 9 out of ten blew up before their first ten hours of running. We even had them blow when first run after rigging them at the shop and our guys were some of the best in the business. OMC actually ended up sending a semi truck load of a hundred powerheads to be set to just swap them when they blew. These are NOT worth buying at any price. Now if you want something worthy , buy the older cross flow Johnson and Evinrudes for this type of boat. THOSE will last you forever if you maintain them even a little bit. If you can afford the etec, these are fantastic engines but you have to do your maintenance and if you change from xd 50 or xd100 two cycle oil you HAVE to tell the EMM that you did so, if not you burn them up. (yes, there is that much of a difference in the way the oils work).
Tell the EMM if you go with a good tcw3 and it will be happy. It doubles the amount of lubrication to keep you going.
Anyway, a few other things here but for the most part he was ok in what he did. Transom does need reinforced or replaced.
All in all, a pair of 200 Johnson cross flow engines and you have something that will last you for decades more yet not break the bank like a pair of new fourstrokes would (60,000 dollars)...

Thank you for that detailed feedback. This information is key to helping people have a better boating experience. I had 2 different crossflow motors over the years on boats and all ran well past 20 yrs when I sold them and I believe proper maintenance and the right oils are keys to that success. Your experience is valued , where are you located? Can we do a zoom call and record it as a follow up to this video that I can share ? Will definitely share this with the boat owner before he invests.
