One thing I did miss that I meant to mention was that the "Use rings and "Item use" actions are mapped to the same button for some reason. I'm unsure if this is supposed to be some kind of balancing thing. It's still annoying all the same.
facts
It's a balance thing, you aren't allowed to have items and use rings at the same time.
@@NeoExperiences After dumping more time into the game, I can understand what they were trying to do. It was strange at first because it felt so strange to just lose access to the core mechanic so easily. That might be why I incidentally left it out of the review because I wasn't sure if it good or not but it is a good thing overall.
it very much discourages holding onto items for long
personally, I love how mechanically dense the game is, it makes it very engaging and exhilarating to succeed in.
Oh, I do too. But there's a balance between mechanics that you always use and ones that are way too situational. I think things like different springs and the spin dash (at least in it's current form) that can ultimately cut with nothing lost.
@@TeamCrossbody the spin dash is situational, sure, but, it can do a lot of good for you, especially after the buff it got in 2.2
@@AmbrosiaPoly-yolkEgg Fair enough, I'll take your word for it and play around with the buffs then. Wouldn't be right to undermine your experience with spin dash when the game is as open like it is. I gotta see what kind of cool thing can be done.
At the very least I'm glad we both agree we've needed another skill based technical kart racer after CTR NF
I'll admit I got filtered by the tutorial (which I still think is a mess given half the mechanics are superfluous and it doesn't even tell you all them) but the recent 2.2 update made the game much more fun. The trick system input is fixed, the handling feels smoother, the AI isn't nearly as brutal (they specifically noted toning down the rubberbanding) and there's tons of accessibility options. I think if they just hadn't overloaded players at the beginning more people would give it a shot.
Every issue I initially had with the game never stopped me from enjoying my time and with the lastest patch addressing most (not all) of my complaints I think it's even better. The game is fantastic imo and free it'll get more players.
Your outro music is fire
Bad Taste Aquarium - Sonic Adventure.
Fête Foraine - Street Fighter 6 (It's like the only standout track in the game. lol.
W gamma ost
It's the best character theme imo.
The insta-whip (The attack at 0 rings) Is in my opinion absolutely not useless, you showed some clips where you got bumped at 0 rings, but you could have insta-whipped your opponent to prevent them from doing that to you. It's a way for you to defend yourself when people try and bump you at 0 rings.
I think what usually actually happens is that people forget it exists because the game has so many mechanics.
You also said items are random, and that's not true,. The roulette can be timed to get you an item of your choice, and the items that appear in the roulette is based on your current position in the race.
I also didn't like the trick system launching you places when you already held a direction, but that has been patched and changed at least, so that's nice. I do however like the trick system and all the different things you can do with it. Ring Racers has a lot of player skill expression, and that makes for a unique and sick kart racer.
Agreed with all that you said but to be fair, the random items was me just explaining a kart racers in general, also I had it on auto select during the time. I've since when manual now that I'm more used to the game. Ring Racers had so much going on at first that managing items was a bit too much. By the time of making the video, I simply forgot about the manual option lol.
I love watching reviews of games I've already played extensively. It's cool seeing the game through someone else's eyes.
But holy moly are Ring Racers reviews hard to watch. In litterally every review I've seen except for one, most of the negatives about the game are said as negatives purley becuase the reviewer doesn't understand or fully use fundamental mechanics.
This is a game you have to sink HOURS into to TRULY see what the game really is.
It's sad that the best kart racer (imo) will likely forever be overshadowed by it's undeserved bad reviews.
With all that said however, I like how the video was put together. Ill gave to look into more of your content. :) 👍
I feel that I wasn't too negative on the game at all and most of the complaints I had were fairly light. I made the review because people weren't giving the game a chance in the first place.
I find now with more experience in the game that my opinions about the mechanics being a little busy and the tutorial not going into more depth with some of the more obscure ones didn't change much.
I mostly time trial so my view point might be a little different than someone who actually races so some mechanics might be used more or less.
This was mostly a quick video to get my thoughts about the game out quickly I had no idea it was going to do this well (to our small channel standards).
Any rate, I don't think the review was bad and I actively encouraged people to play the game while accepting what it is because I do feel it's the best kart racer. Thank you for watching and saying your piece. Truly, we'll try to improve.
Those mechanics that got brushed off are gonna save time in the SS stages. Game has that FGC style when learning tech and turn approach but won't touch 2.2 until i get the real challenge done. Cause the new version nerfed the AI.
I was largely okay with the older AI overall. I haven't really played it in a while since I time trial most of the time but I have to see how it changed.
@@TeamCrossbody They also changed a few things for the SS stages, like keeping the damage that you did to the UFO Catcher
It's clear that you didn't fully understood mechanics like spin-dash and insta-whip at the time of writing. Something the tutorial doesn't directly state about spin-dash is that you rev it up faster on ring debt. It allows you to get up slopes without rings while not wasting too much time and speed. Insta-whip is niche as moves get, but it can be powerful when the situation presents itself and reacted upon. Would have been nice to have fast spin-dashed mentioned more.
Yeah, one thing I want to take back is the bit about "trimming out the fat". I didn't fully understand the mechanics.
@@TeamCrossbody You can take that out, but replace it with communication of mechanics being an issue. For all this game does to teach you how it works, it doesn't have a manual built to reward players for mechanical exploration and to act as quick reminders for new or returning players.
@@benji-menji Yeah, I'll do a follow-up review somewhere down the line. Maybe after we get some time after all these other videos we're making currently. Thanks.
Looks like theres a lot of content
That's my favorite thing about the game.
With 140 more or less tracks,so many characters and the mechanics are so much for many people (and the bonus stages from the cups). And this game had secrets like secret tracks and the Blind Eye challenge and even a secret joke character.
@@sergiomendoza251 The fact that I'm just grinding time trials right now and knowing that I can eat off that for so long before even considering trying something different is awesome.
But everything else in this video pretty much describes what I think about the game W video
Me personally I like using the spin dash but I can understand if people prefer to use rings for the same thing
Yeah, rings does everything spin dash does but on the go. The only real use outside of behind the starting line is being used to go up hills ringless but that doesn't really come up a whole lot and I believe hills shouldn't be as punishing as they are anyway.
@@TeamCrossbody I think getting launched into off-road by items is also a good application for the spin dash. Hills were also patched to be less punishing, heck yeah.
@@JetEriksen it has uses but I still feel the spin dash is way too situational. Hills do feel better with the latest patch.
@@TeamCrossbody theres an unexplained mechanic that heavily shortens the spindash charge time if you havent got any rings. at 6:30 that quick spindash couldve saved you but instead you went for the rings. the fact that it goes unexplained is a bit dumb but its a feature :/
@@slimjamYeah. It shocks me that the tutorial is so long (which I get) but it fails to explain how some of the more situational mechanic can be used in certain areas you designed it for. I see what you mean in the video, but the game told me that rings were more important.
