@@dr.davidarmstrong5881 hello Dr. I have just moved to Yanceyville North Carolina, i was born visually impaired however my vision has been the same throughout my life, and my peripheral vision is good as well 20/200 and i am also colorblind. I was just told recently by an eye doctor that i am a good candidate for the bioptic driving program, so i have an appointment in November to see the low vision specialist at a place called academy eye associates in Durham NC, I'm not familiar at all with anything in North Carolina as i have just moved here, but i really hope that the low vision specialist is as knowledgeable as you are in prescribing me exactly what i need in order to be a safe an effective driver, I'd much rather be able to see you instead because i just feel as though you would be able to better fit me with the bioptics that i need especially regarding my color blindness.
Thank you sir for such an informative video. I am a psychiatrist and I suffer from Manila dystrophy. I would request you to give me some low vision aids options for reading. I am using prism glasses(fonda) but at times it because difficult to read as i have to get as close as 3-4 inches away from the reading material. I will be grateful. God bless you with good health and strength ,so that you may help people in need.
Dr. Kahn, I wish it was that easy. You will need to consult a low vision optometrist in your country. After a low vision evaluation the doctor will prescribe what is best to suit your needs. Be sure the doctor sees the devices you are using now. Explain their limitations and what you would like to improve about them. Good luck.
The Falcon autofocus telescopic glasses are used to help distance vision. Not for reading or writing. I am sorry, I am not familiar with Indian currency. You should check with a low vision doctor in your country.
My son has achondroplasia and subluxation of his lenses. He can see distant objects clearly but though the edge of the lens. Will this help him see better and what do you suggest for him?
I'm sorry, but there is no way that I can help you without personally evaluating your vision. It cannot be done by long distance. I'd recommend that you Google Low Vision Doctor and see if there is someone near you who can help. Good luck.
I found my way to this video due to a family member having recently been diagnosed with macular degeneration. Eye doctor straight up said there's nothing that can be done. But I find it hard to believe that there's absolutely no help at all in any way for this disease. I'm not going to lie, these kind of look like some kind of pseudoscience from the 1800s, but the possibility is intriguing. Could these really help? Could he really watch TV? Use the computer? How does one go about starting the process of getting a pair? Are they widely available? We're in south Louisiana and it takes a long time for most things to make it here. What kind of price could one expect to pay for these?
Gray, Thanks for your comment and questions. First of all, literally all patients seen by low vision optometrists have been told that nothing will help them. Their doctor is saying that their is no cure, nothing is going to make the problem go away. They often forget that the patient wants to see the best that they are capable of so they can continue to lead an active and independent life. Bioptic telescopic glasses were invented over 50 years ago. There is no pseudo science involved. They are simply miniature telescopes mounted in eyeglasses and containing the person's eyeglass prescription. Almost all states issue special permits allowing people with macular degeneration and other conditions to drive while wearing them. Louisiana is one of those states. I would recommend that you take a look at the website of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists, IALVS.com. You will find the contact information there for Dr. Mona Douglas, a low vision optometrist in Louisiana, who I know well and recommend. You will also find the requirements for driving with bioptics in your state. Good luck. I hope you will call Dr. Douglas. She will speak with you or your relative and tell you if she can help.
Dr. David Armstrong 1 minute ago Thanks for the question Noel. Each state has different requirements for driving with bioptics. Qualifying to drive with bioptic telescopic glasses depends on the amount of vision that you have remaining and how much improvement the telescopic part of the glasses makes in your vision. It depends on what you are able to see, your visual acuity with and without the telescopes, not what has caused the vision loss. Astigmatism does not disqualify you. I am not familiar with the term ableism.
Thanks for asking. I’m in Virginia. My closest office to PA is in Waynesboro, VA. Waynesboro is in central Virginia a few miles west of Charlottesville. If you’d like to talk give me a call for a free telephone consultation. 866-321-2030
I am not aware of any specific programs for that purpose. Some of my patients have received help paying from their church, civic organization, Lions Club, etc. Care Credit is a medical credit card that allows 12 month financing without interest. You will have to do a little research and see what is available in your area. Of course, there are online programs like GoFundMe that is a possibility. Maybe your present bioptics can be repaired. Good luck
Thanks for watching my videos. There is really no way that I would know the cost of anything in Pakistan. Bioptic glasses or anything else. You will need to consult a low vision doctor in Pakistan. Good luck.
Thank you for making the identical comment on 4 of my videos. If you have a question and live in the United States or Canada you can call me at 866 321-2030. If you live somewhere else in the world I'd recommend you search for a low vision optometrist close to you.
That would depend upon the size and location of the coloboma. A low vision optometrist will be able to evaluate your vision using telescopic or microscopic glasses and determine if they will help you. Good luck.
