  • SPOILER ALERT!
    This video is an in-depth discussion of the game, including extensive game footage. I have done my best to avoid any obvious or major spoilers - but please be aware that there are inevitably minor ones. My introduction will tell you exactly what I cover.
    If you are on the fence about WEC, then my discussion may be helpful.
    And if you don't want to play WEC yourself, but want to see a bit of the game and my experience with it .. well, then this is the right video for you. 😀
    AUDIO/VIDEO ISSUES: I had a bevy of technical issues while preparing this video - I'm afraid "it is what it is!" I decided it was hopefully of enough interest to make it available here, even though it's not as polished as I would like.
    One problem for me as a hearing-impaired content creator is that it can be difficult to spot and adjust audio levels and issues. Please bear this in mind.
    Time Stamps:

      Used to be a huge JRPG fan back in the 90s, took a long break from gaming and got back into it during the Call of Duty era. After getting burned out from FPS games, been playing a lot of visual novels. This channel has been introducing me to some JRPG games that have blown into huge franchises during my absence!

    The biggest problem I had with the game, is the bait and switch scenario was MORE interesting to me then the actual scenario. Which meant the whole time I felt like "couldnt we have just had a game around the underwater theming setting instead" if your gonna do a bait and switch. It has to be done carefully. Personally, I think this is one of the worst bait and Switches I've seen in a game

    • @Food4Dogs
      @Food4Dogs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Yes, that's exactly what I mention. I really liked the underwater park scenario and didn't mind that it played out like a lesser Zero Escape.
      But the complete change of game plan after that was off-putting.

    And also, I would like to say something about the intro... I really enjoy writing reviews. I can relate to what you said about being somewhat conflicted about criticizing a game where clearly a lot of effort and care was put into. I feel, however, that the best way to honor all this effort and care is to give your honest opinion -- in a polite/respectful way, of course. And you did that wonderfully, so feel free to do more of this (if you want).

    As always, it’s so nice and relaxing to hear your thoughts and commentary on any game. Honestly, it just feels like a nice chat and I could listen to you talk for hours (and often do!😂)
    That being said, sadly this game really doesn’t look like my cup of tea… seeing the gameplay and hearing your thoughts hasn’t really changed that for me. I’m not sure who the game is even aimed at - the super kiddy art style and gameplay combined with the dark intro and underlying themes. It’s very strange and off-putting to me (the characters already annoy me, and I haven’t even played it). Great that they experimented but… not for me.

    I'm really looking forward to this video. Your experience (not researching the game, buying it purely based on the people involved) is exactly the same as mine. I did it to avoid spoilers knowing surprises are a big part of what makes their games so enjoyable, but from what I've played (have stopped for now) I am also really conflicted about it. It had some of the aspects from their previous games that I was expecting but then there were other areas where the game was actually the complete opposite of what I would normally go for.

    I wonder how exactly this kind of game came to be, what was the development process?... And it baffles me how they practically wasted some of the marketing budget, pitching the game as something it never meant to be...
    And yet, through all that, by seeing these dumb but cute moments, and hearing the kids sing their sily songs, part of me kinda feels something very soft towards this game. Ah, it's hard...

      @Food4Dogs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I honestly don't know, never having had a "turbo" on any controller. I don't know what options there are for the Switch (and I play mostly handheld, so that makes it difficult).
      For the PS4 controller I have the back button attachment (which is programmable, sorta like macros).

    I really appreciate that you took the time to make a video about WEC and going so in depth about it. I also got it when it released on Switch and found myself somewhat disappointed considering the team behind it, so seeing those feelings/opinions being reflected here feels validating :)
    The ideas behind the game were pretty solid, the artistic direction is good and the story had some potential, but it needed a lot of polish and a lot more time to flesh out the characters and plot twists. I would have liked a completely linear story, or maybe branching paths that were a bit more meaningful. The controls were also pretty bad, the platforming parts were frustrating because of it and I also think a completely visual novel-like game would have been better.
    I know you mention not wanting to be negative about games at the beginning of your video, but I think that sharing your opinion helps those who weren't too sure on whether to get this game or not. I think that Zero Escape, Danganronpa and AI: The Somnium Files are better picks from these writers, especially the last one if they're looking to play something that's very solid story, gameplay and graphics-wise, and that is auto-conclusive :)

I think one of the reasons there were so many characters that didn't do much is because each of the characters represented a member of the Chinese zodiac. So about half of the characters were only there so we can represent all 12 animals.

    I love Take-sensei's art so I was interested in this game, but honestly I may hold off on this one. Seems like it was not fully realized, possibly may have ran into some development troubles so they just released it as it was and tacked the end on later.
    I appreciate your willingness to appreciate the bad with the good, a lot of gamers(sometimes me included) over the years have become bitter or cynical with games nowadays, and might call them 'trash' for one or 2 blemishes on an otherwise enjoyable game.

    I know this is an old video, but I still wanted to say: I was on the same boat as you. But the biggest issue I have is that, back when Too Kyo games was funded, they announced Death March Club and quite literally described it as a death game with children.
    Furthermore, the initial trailers hammered in the death game aspect even more. Not to mention, as you know, Kodaka and Uchikoshi are both known for their death game based visual novels.
    So the bait and switch feels even worse in that sense. Like fans were tricked into playing something different than what they were told.

    I apologize if this has already been brought to your attention, but your initial way of playing the game- through one timeline- is the only way to play. I attempted to backtrack after the first divide and the game told me I was unable to until I received the first ending. This meant, as someone who initially chose to go to Oita, Yuki meant almost nothing to me as she was just handed to me with little to no introduction and I could not backtrack in order to get to know her better.
    I will say, however, I find this game just so charming. While a good half of the characters are rather one-dimensional, it truly feels like a group of children running around with little to no rules. The silly jokes (like the F-bomb and Nyoro’s other silly inventions) made the game for me. While it wasn’t Uchikoshi or Kodaka’s best work, I found the things it did do right quite enjoyable.
    I personally think WEC was made as a sort of gateway to their other works. While it isn’t the most family-friendly game, I think WEC is a wonderful way to introduce younger audiences to Uchikoshi and Kodaka for when they’re older and able to understand their more mature works better. It surely beats children discovering the likes of Danganronpa, Zero Escape, and AI at a far too young age (I can say firsthand that Danganronpa isn’t the best influence on an eleven year old).

    • @Food4Dogs
      @Food4Dogs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for bringing up this issue! I simply couldn't remember for certain any more (I played the game 6 months prior) whether it was possible to access the different timeline segments before the cliffhanger ending, or even true ending. Yea, that would explain why I went through it all on the one timeline to the ending! 👍
      I'm really glad you're finding the game charming (it has bags of charm, I quite agree) and enjoyable.
      Goodness, yes - Danganronpa is not suitable for an 11-year-old. 😄
      I actually take age ratings and recommendations very seriously and where I think it's important always mention them.

    We came away from this game feeling almost exactly the same. Conflicted in the same ways, having the same observations, and pretty much enjoying the same things (though I think I'm quite a bit higher on the OST.)
    My game actually crashed when I finished the final boss, and when I reloaded the game my save file was complete, and I couldn't actually go back and watch the ending without replaying the ENTIRE final chapter+final boss again. Needless to say the fact that the story's ending and final reveals felt very underwhelming, on top of the fact that game game crashed left me feeling INCREDIBLY deflated on this game.
    Everything surrounding this game's creation and release is so confounding. From the half-launch on Apple arcade, to the Switch version not being advertised at all, to the PC version being announced 2 weeks prior to release and then not working on AMD processors at all until a day later (and there's STILL game breaking bugs in that version that prevent it from being finished). It feels like the ball was dropped at every conceivable point. This game was originally known as Death March Club, and it really feels appropriate since I feel this game was marched out to just die on arrival. A game from these two creators in particular should have been a pretty big event, but there was nobody there at ANY point to see that this game got done right.
    This is honestly the most conflicted I've felt about a game in a long while. xD

    I'm not familiar with this game, but I love hearing your thoughts anyways! Please don't feel bad about sharing negative thoughts on something-- of course plenty of effort goes into making a game, but that doesn't mean it went perfectly, either! Sometimes production gets a little messy, too, and it can show. It's completely valid to notice flaws in content and to be disappointed by them.
    I also do want to share a game you may really enjoy-- it's called Wargroove, and is on Switch! It's from a London-based company that makes wonderful games. Wargroove is very similar to Fire Emblem in gameplay, and is a very colorful, beautiful pixel game with fun tactics. It also has a very cute dog as one of the main cast, and lots of cool and unique female characters too! I would love to know if you ever try it, it seems to me like it would be the perfect game for you. :)

    This was a FASCINATING conversation! Thank you for prioritizing positivity on the norm while still willing to be blunt when something is subpar. I remember telling you that my opinions of this game were, uh...not pleasant, to say the least. Glad to know I wasn't alone in my criticisms. I had *no* idea about the game being unfinished on Apple Arcade tho! The target demographic was an anomaly to me too. That intro with Pielope was _horrifying_ , but the humor was childish so I couldn't tell - I'm not sure the devs knew tbh. Maybe they wanted a little bit of everything so as to introduce it to a new demographic without alienating their old fanbases? And YES THE CONTROLS!!! I died sooo many times on-stream solely bc they were lagging that badly. That said, I did appreciate the end-game twists that I admittedly did not foresee whatsoever. They couldn't save my overall opinion tho. I had high hopes for this, but my community and I just found it wanting in the end.

    I think this is the perfect review of this game! Maybe just because I feel exactly the same. :P But really, it's very well presented and I appreciate the deserved, but even handed criticism.
    I was well aware this was at least partially a platformer but thought the story would be better. Even with the relatively short sections of gameplay versus the vn-like elements, it still managed to feel tedious and uninteresting. In this day and age there are tons of incredible platformers, so a game that's clunky has to make up for it better than this one does. And despite how childish the action feels, I think the story would bore most kids! Overall the game felt poorly conceived. I'm still looking forward to Too Kyo's next projects, but this was fairly disappointing.

  • @LaLaLA-ue1ho
    @LaLaLA-ue1ho 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My biggest problem of the game was really the platforming. The game only ever gives you enough time to introduce a gimmick with each ability, but never develops past that or builds on top of each on. Very soup of the day.
    I've been trying to pace myself more with games recently, so for World's End Club I played a scenario a day. Story+ Act + Camp. It gave me time to familiarize myself with the characters, and I appreciated the game fore what it was in the end.
    I loved a lot of the characters themselves and the group dynamic, their models, and the music.
    Too Kyo did make another game that got released in 2020 (i think) called Death Come True. It's like a 2-3 hour full motion video murder mystery sort of thing.
    Haha, the Apple Arcade debacle XD.
    I think if they were to revise a few concepts it could have hit more of a 10 year audience. It was weird seeing it rated as high as it was along side the delivery of it's humor, the depth of it's story, and themes brought about.
    Oof , the yeti scene reminded me of where the game difficulty would skyrocket at random points.
    Fabulous video! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on WEC, and I'm of a similar mind. I went into the game with high expectations based on the designers, and there were definitely some great ideas in it, but they were frequently hampered by the execution. I was also disappointed by the final boss fight, especially since it didn't really involve any of the characters' abilities - the previous boss (at the point where you come back to where the prologue left off) felt like a better fit.
    There are a few things that I suspect contributed to the game's problems - the designers are best known for innovative visual novels, so maybe they lacked the experience to develop a platforming game; and adjusting the game for Apple Arcade probably involved making sacrifices in the gameplay, structure and maybe also graphics and visual design.
    As far as I can tell, the game was given a 12+ age rating in Japan, which definitely feels more appropriate than the Western ratings. Maybe if the game was presented primarily as an Apple Arcade title for a young adult audience it would make more sense, and we wouldn't have come at it with the wrong expectation.
