Any fans of Big Black will note the alt name in the opening replay, as well as the nicknames on the big six shown in the teambuilder. For those unfamiliar, they were an extraordinary band led by the consummate artist Steve Albini, who just passed. One time I made the baller play of raw switching Gengar into lead Meta and it took the boom. Even my opponent was shocked, but yeah lead Meta is awesome
ah 75 minutes long, the same length as James Whales 1935 classic "The Bride of Frankenstein" truly a wonderful film that came out during the Great Depression, and this can be seen through the somber tone of the film. This is my best impersonation of BKC.
I felt that the 15 minute, single shot scene where Dr. Pretorius expounds the virtues of lead Salamence was a little much given the short runtime of the film, but overall the movie is a masterpiece.
i like leading band flygon and going "You wont switch you think im defensive let me ohko your tar" and then they switch into skarmory and i give them a spike for free
i started getting into adv ou a couple weeks ago and im pretty hype rn cuz when you said there were six leads i was in my head like "ttar, meta, skarm, dos, mence, and maybe cune" i never thought id learn enough to be competitive but its happening :) edit: ive also been watching your videos like crazy. good shit, very informative
I built a team loosely following vapicuno's ADV OU teambuilding guidelines earlier this week featuring Lum Medicham as its lead and I'm having a bunch of fun with it. The lack of lefties bluffs Choice Band really well, especially when sand is up. Speaking of sand, Medicham scares lead Ttar shitless, leading to immeasurable joy as I get to click Focus Punch turn 1 roughly every other game, something I'm extremely grateful for. And if the opponent gets cheeky and tries switching into Gengar expecting to cast a free Will-O-Wisp, it'll get lured to hell and back by the Lum Berry. On top of that, I EVd Medicham to live one hit from many of the tiers' flagship revenge killers after one round of sand (it might even survive them after 2 rounds sometimes), meaning Medicham can potentially land a 2-for-1 while concealing the rest of my offense, for which it is a great enabler. In case that wasn't enough bliss for me, Medicham has been my 3rd favourite Pokémon since I was but a wee lad (Fighting/Psychic was the coolest thing to me, plus that unforgettable dance move in the 7th opening of the anime won me over). Its Mega (needless to say, I also love it) is just Pure Power in Gen 7, and back when it was the current gen I got my share of jollies (some Adamant ones too) from clicking HJK from virtually 250 base attack, but this is a whole nother dynamic (ngl, it does, if only very vaguely, remind me of lead Machamp in DPP OU) and I'm having a real blast!
RIP STEVE. I’m the person I am today cause of his bands. BKC THANKS FOR MAKING simply some of the most interesting videos discussing competitive games of any kind.
The 200 meta as it's now called, was wildly different than the full 386 (or even just emerald). Pokemon like Zangoose, Dodrio, Slaking, and Dusclops were all very common and not even walled too bad by skarm because mag took care of that and Metagross, which didn't have explosion yet either. I'd be really interested in a 200 meta video too
Cool one I've been seeing a lot more of recently is regirock. Threatens zap and tar w slide and eq/sp, cripples skarm (or anything) w twave, blows up on waters for your agiligross/ddmence, flips the table w counter on meta in ways tar never could, even has the benefit harder to put in dug range than tar. Super neat really customizable way to make headway at the start of the game for ur other phys guys I like it a lot.👍
And on the flip side, there’s so many defensive Pokemon that can take it like a champ. Swampert can take literally anything from full, and is Ground type. Celebi only loses to Explosion and has Natural Cure. Jirachi has the right stats and resists to make it work and can also cripple you. If it’s a faster Special attacker with an advantage against Rock, Regirock dies
one of my favourite mons to lead in adv is glalie, for anyone unaware it has a great matchup into zapdos, salamence, suicune and especially skarmory, so it's amazing as an agro spikes lead. you ev to live two zap tbolts and run salac berry to get a third move off, then you have spikes, ice beam, taunt to ruin lead skarm's life, and explosion if you get all 3 layers or need to deny a setup turn. against ttar and metagross you can either die for one spike or just go to pert and come back later
Wow referencing the reason why Ttar is good in ADV OU? Man that was a great video! How I first got introduced into ADV OU. I'm so happy that I've been continually watching these! Thank you BKC!
Sleep Venusaur is one of my go-to leads, it out speeds several other common lead and threatens either sleep or damage. Be careful when looking at opposing lead Salamence and maybe Zapdos…..it’s super bulky when pulling off a sleep plus a Leech Seed…..if you wanna go super defensive, I go with Roar and maybe Giga Drain, or replace Roar with Protect….Growth + Giga Drain can be pretty deadly with a defensive Venusaur Venusaur is UUBL, I feel like its more viable than it’s tiering suggests (I’m sure there’s plenty of Pokémon in tiers they maybe don’t deserve to be in haha) Take me with a grain of salt, I’m not the greatest player by any means, but I’ve found success with Venusaur
Hell yeah, I also love to use a lead venu, but yeah mence is scary, and zap can sub and ruin everything sleep Venusaur can do. Regardless, sleep hp fire leech can bully skarmbliss pretty well if you play heads up. I've tried roar/tox also to some success. I usually go max speed max hp. All hail the flower frog lizard
okay, i see! in order to win in adv, i need to feel my opponent out at first, before i start applying pressure by digging into them (with spikes of course)
I like the video and I think it's smart to include Suicune as one of the big leads of the tier. I think Skarmory has become much weaker as a lead pokemon because of how terrible it is into Zapdos and how immediately concerning ZapDug strategies are into Skarm lead teams. This is combined with the fact that Skarm lead teams are typically going to be very reliant on spikes but are often forced into risky situations with it being out turn 1
To be fair, RBY is like. About 18 OU Pokemon and then cheese picks. Five of them make up the whole lead metagame. No items, no abilities, Final Destination. Pretty much the most important factor in choosing your lead in RBY is how fast it goes, how accurate it is at putting something into a coma, and if it does anything after doing that job. And then when you’re done understanding how Gengar works you hop onto new player ladder and get your ass beat by lead Hypno and other things Big Yellow didn’t train you for
i sometimes use lead belly drum hariyama, imagine they go skarm to absorb knock and suddenly they have to deal with +6 yama :) not a very consistent strat in and of itself but can be very punishing for tss and for some stalls
Can you do a video about why Gen 3 UUBL is so massive? I find it hard to believe all those mons are actually broken in UU. I mean there’s more mons in UUBL than in OU proper
Tiers in gen 3 were not based on usage. The idea of UU as a real metagame with usage statistics and suspect tests was conceived in mid gen 4. In gen 3, pokemon were put into tiers based on guesses by the players. Viability rankings basically. Also gen 4 UU had short development time and was the first attempt yet it still manages to be an amazing tier, gen 4 truly goat gen.
This question just came to mind and I'm shocked I've never asked it on an ADV video, but is there any mons you think would be banworthy if Sand Stream didn't exist?
I'm a dumb lil baby that likes running a very specific hp ice typhlosion with thunderpunch and overheat and brick break as a suicide anti lead, obliterates the steels and mence and can smack zap and tar into important ranges. Cune eats t punch and the pert switch sucks hard, but the surprise factor does help
ADV always had a lead metagame. The only difference is that it didnt make or break the game simply because ADV has relatively more tools to deal with it, and the stall-type damage are usually longer in turns. In DPP, theres SR and Spikes but Rapid spinners are too weak to survive for long and stealth rock deals more damage in just one turn compared to spikes.
Smeargle nowdays used Spore, Spike, Encore, Destiny Bond, allowing Smeargle to abuse the long duration of encore to punish set up with Spikes or pressure, Destiny bond to trade with other threats which perfect harmony with encore because if you set up as smeargle Destiny bonds it's completely safe to encore into pressure.
When I’m in a mood to go crazy, I’ll run YOLO Skarmory WITH a CHOICE BAND as a lead haha….yes, a Choice Band….not a good choice for a lead…well, not a good choice for Skarmory AT ALL, but the surprise factor CAN do wonders I’ll run HP Ground, Steel Wing, Drill Peck, and Spikes on lead Choice Band Skarmory….Steel Wing can be better against Tyranitar since you’ll get STAB, and good for neutral damage against things that maybe resist flying types Don’t take this set serious, obviously, but it CAN be a lot of fun lol

This is all pretty complicated, I'm just going to lead Choice Band Regirock and blow up
weird lack of coverage of the OU lead threat that is trick Choice Band Alakazam
