Solar revealed that the unibrown was meant to represent artistry and rebellion against beauty standards. She wanted to show that woman exist in many forms (remember her being bald in spit it out?) anyway she’s amazing

@@rayannetirza9432 I don't think she said this but she did say that the inspiration for doing the unibrow was Frida Kahlo. She mentioned this in their MV reaction to AYA which is on the official MAMAMOO channel. It doesn't have eng sub but what she said was basically that she was inspired by watching Frida Kahlo (probably the 2002 film Frida) and that she wanted to show a woman who overcomes her pain by being strong (tough) so she did a homage to "Frida Kahlo-nim".

This really is a divisive title track. A lot of people dislike the instrumental chorus and given that Mamamoo is known for their vocals it was disconcerting when I first heard Aya. The thing that people may be missing is that Mamamoo is changing as a group and leaving behind their old standby behaviors. They have an impressive catalog of tracks that are representative of who they were in other eras and it's blinded people to the possibility that they can change their sound. Mamamoo is getting older and their life experiences simply don't track with their peers in K-Pop anymore. They're listening to all sorts of music and they want to try new things. I actually watched Queendom yesterday and their win seems like the main catalyst for the more experimental sound of Aya and the rest of their Travel mini album. I will make a post under this with a spoiler header to discuss that in detail.

Mamamoo was very...okay on Queendom. Their performances were great and their audience engagement was amazing as always. But they saw OMG, Lovelyz, and (G)I-DLE really giving 110% and seemed to realize how comfortable they had become in their niche. They won 2nd in all three preliminary rounds and were very happy with that. Like, they showed no desire to be #1 at all. The fact is that Mamamoo charts with all of their singles but they don't get to #1 often. When they ended up winning Queendom I think it hit them that they, to paraphrase The Joy Luck Club, have "best quality" music to match their hearts and that they can be successful at anything they want to do if they keep that in mind. Aya is them believing that anything that they do is best quality. They're not wrong because this comeback has been record breaking and transformative for them on several levels. I know for a fact that we would not have gotten a song like Aya without their Queendom win because they would have been afraid to take a chance on a song like this before.

@@ReapTheWhirlwind Wow. This is really insightful and eye opening for sure! I definitely agree on your sentiment that because MAMAMOO was being consistent through out the past years that when they decide to change up their style, people become so blinded by the fact that they're changing their sounds that the people typically reject the change that the girls are obviously wanting to do. I've read from some kpop music critic online that basically said they wanted the "old" MAMAMOO back (jazz inspired, vocal and harmony heavy). I understand their sentiments however they're so blinded and caught up in the past that they don't get to appreciate what's in front of them. I also want those harmonies, those high notes, that jazz sound to be brought back but I can't force the girls to do just what I want because that would basically putting them in a box and refusing them to grow and learn other stuff.

    • @stevie9675
      @stevie9675 4 ปีที่แล้ว +83

@@ReapTheWhirlwind I never really thought of Queendom being the catalyst but now that I think of it, you're right. Maybe Starry Night was only the beginning of their change however Queendom seems to what had pushed to go farther and explore their soundscape. Thinking back, it was an odd choice to have *Destiny* to be their song for the competition 'cause I never heard anything like that from them before. And then they released *Hip* which some would argue to be a throwback to their earlier sounds and seeing all these new fans say that *Hip* was their 1st MMM song, they must have been startled to hear *Aya* . When I first heard the song, I was both terrified and overjoyed, Terrified because it was different in a way that wasn't following the current music trend (and the typical accusations of cultural appropriation because of how it sounds and looks) as well as overjoyed because it's something fresh and that deviates from the typical kpop structure. I'm sorry for the ranting lol but you really have changed my perspective on this song and what could've been the reason for it's creation. Thank you.

WOW. I think I like you... This is a really cool and respectful way to put out your view on MMM's evolution, I really enjoyed reading it and I believe you hit the nail on the head: Mamamoo is growing, both as artists and on a personal level, and that's okay.
I personally love AYA because of the feelings that make me feel, this acceptance of a breakup with a happy ending is what my heart needed, to be honest. Then you add all the little layers on a production level with the sound and BAM it took me to a journey to discover all the details.

Oh wow you're better at writing down what I think than myself lol Another way to say I agree with you. I love this song because it's new and fresh and experimental. I've been stressing over the fact that this title track does not "do well" on chart and the girls may not get a music show win at all. But hey, what's the point in all of those anyway? Their fans love the song, they get to perform it in a badass way and most importantly they can try something new and prove to everyone that anything they do is amazing. What more can we ask of them?

That’s the thing about Mamamoo though; they don’t always play it safe. Dingga would’ve been a great title track, but as the CEO stated in writing and as the girls mentioned on a radio show, they saw the PERFORMANCE potential of Aya and wanted to give everyone an intense performance to watch. They know that they’re “Believe and Listen to Mamamoo,” but they also want to be “Believe and Watch Mamamoo.” They’re very aware this track is not going to be as big of a hit with listeners as Dingga is. But they still chose it. In a way, I admire that decision itself, choosing not to do what would be easy, but what they want to show their fans/the people.

This is why Mamamoo is beyond the typical girl group title they are Artists and even their seniors in SK music field starts to see them as Artists as well. They put their own style in everything they do. They are outstanding Soloist on their own but when together they have this synergy that cant be replicated.
Just like Solar said in the pinned comment of their MV, Mamamoo did a Mamamoo song they did know Dingga was more favorable to the GP but they want to try something new and give a great performance tp their fans. And boy they did! Seeing the live stages on their music shows the stylists and Mamamoo did a great job. Cant wait to see them in the end of the year awards

This song is comparing their ex to a decayed tooth, that they did to pull out and get rid of, but they are not very upset, so they only teared up, speaking as if their relationship were only worth one drop of tear. As with practically anything Solar does (and Mamamoo in general do), that unibrow was ofc her idea (so was the bald head for Spit It Out as well as the two-colour rocker style in Hip). This time she didn't even ask her CEO beforehand and just did it lmao (you can check out the Solarsido video on it for more details). So whenever someone asks "I wonder why they made her do this/made them do this, "I wonder whose idea that was" etc etc when it comes to Mamamoo - you can just assume that basically everything they do on the creative and artistic aspect is mostly either their ideas or done with them being heavily involved bc you can't really command four women, who shine this brightly in their individuality, around and tell them blindly what to do, to wear, etc.
Those are four "my way" kinda women with major creative input. Those are four incredibly talented, genuine artists. Always have been. And always growing and evolving. Whew, I love them so much, kinda getting emotional and amazed again just thinking about all of this lmao

Imo the first time through this MV is a wtf, jaw drop experience and it takes a few listens to get a handle on the song.
Wheein's character is different from the others, who each take a more aggressive approach to the breakup. Hwasa's dominatrix dentist is extracting the bad tooth, obviously meant to indicate that removing the lingering feelings for an old lover is painful but necessary. Moonbyul is clearly determined to destroy those feelings. Solar's unibrow was inspired by Frida Kahlo's success in not only surviving but achieving great things as an artist despite living in pain, and Solar ritualistically stabs the bowl of her tears at the end to symbolize her determination to move on with her life. Wheein seems to go from darkness to light without the violence of the other three. She has the heavy eye shadow, the veil, the hats and the veiled hat, which I take to represent her repressed situation with the old lover, and then she becomes someone who lights up the world when she frees herself from the old relationship - note the scene where she lights a candle and all the lights in the room come on magically.
From what I can tell you're not alone in not being thrilled by the chorus. Kpop likes its pop songs to have a catchy, upbeat hook and Aya's anti-drop chorus seems to be the kiss of death commercially - it's quickly dropping on the k-charts and Aya seems destined to join Wind Flower and Paint Me as underappreciated masterpieces. For me Aya is just another reason to respect MMM for doing their own thing, following their own artistic vision, and pushing the boundaries of what a kpop girl group can be.

When I first heard the song I wasn't quite sold either, bc the switch-ups didn't feel cohesive. I was blown away by that aggressive Hwasa post-chorus/second verse you mentioned + loved the chorus (especially the "teardrops or raindrops" part bc something about the beat feels so... familiar, as an Indian).
However, it took several listens to start hearing the connective tissue between the different parts of the song. I was particularly put off by the tempo change at the end, before realising the breaking-free aspect that it represents. (Similar to Maria, where it's deliberately sped up in a jarring way, to close the bitter undertone on a more triumphant note.)
Overall, I've come to realise with Mamamoo's music that if it ain't an instant banger, it's an eventual grower.

I feel you on the empty chorus in general since I typically prefer vocal driven as well. The song definitely grows on you upon more listens + pairing it with the live performance where you can see the dance during the chorus and it makes sense. Funny enough about Dingga & Aya, as RBW invited some fans to listen to the 3 potential title tracks and vote for which one they wanted. Dingga won bc they thought it would chart really well and appeal more to the general public, but the company & the girls decided to make it a pre-release bc they wanted to be more experimental with performance and sound with Aya.

You guessed right PD, they are comparing the pain and the idea of removing a rotten tooth to a relationship break up, but they are not feeling so upset about it because it was a toxic relationship, a "rotten tooth", that has to go, that's also why it's only worth "one teardrop".
At the first listen i did feel that it was a bit all over the place, but after the third listen the song grew on me and now i love it! I also agree that the song and the mv seem to be more centered on Hwasa and Solar, probably because this kind of sound and concept is more their style than it is for Wheein and Byul (not that they're not slaying tho and i wished Byul had more parts).

Guys i just realized that at 7:00 the scene is basically a mouth. The red represents inside of the mouth and the graves where is written 'tooth' are literally teeth and Hwasa being dressed in black with the pickaxe, she is the rottenness that they refer in the lyric: "A rotten tooth needs to be pulled out AYA..." so basically the idea would be that maybe a toxic relationship is like a rotten tooth that gets worse and worse if you don't get rid of it. It's an interesting idea and concept for sure. That's my theory, what do you think?

Closing my eyes while listening to Aya helps me grasp the music quicker. Let your ears devour the music, let your body feel the beat. Then the structure that seemed quite confusing earlier suddenly fits in and makes sense. It's sure one of my unusual music listening experiences.
The MV is fab; it's great visual treat, I love it to death; but it's quite distracting first time watching. I kinda got lost into beatiful filming and everything and couldn't 100% concentrate on the music.
Overall, I love Aya musically, though I'm not giving it 10/10 (maybe somewhere b/w 8-9). And if someone could do some club remixes of the song, it'll be a blast. It's a perfect club material.

Ayy PD been waiting for this :) The MV was an immediate 10/10 for me, I love all the set dressing and the rich colours and how the Arabic sounds in the song influenced those decisions. The lightning looked dope! It's definitely a higher quality than a lot of their MV's whether that was due to a difference in budget or the people behind the scenes idk, but it felt like a step up. Solar with a unibrow didn't surprise me after the bald scene in her Spit It Out MV lol but I think it's awesome that she basically flips the bird to 'beauty standards' by showing such looks and empowering women by doing so. Dingga was an instant bop whereas the instrumental-driven chorus makes AYA more of a grower, I loved the song on first listen but it took a few more listens for me to vibe with the chorus. The dance break at the end though? FIRE. AYA definitely represents Mamamoo very well, they're fearless when it comes to the experimentation in their music and they don't mince what they want to say with their lyrics.

mamamoo have been working their ass off for the past 6 years from events to another events, they not only growing as an artists they also help in building rainbow bridge practically paying for their company bills. So when the company finally go all out for this comeback we all felt over the moon finally have a taste of having the high quality mv the high quality music video set the outfit look so expensive the make up look so good on every member the choreography look expensive and much more harder than hip everything look so expensive and the company finally doing it most right for their artists.
You can check out their live stages everything look so expensive and i just can take off my eyes from each one of them
The reason why they choose AYA over DINGGA because they decide to do more dance focused performance not only from their vocal but their dance they said how they can do a lot of things with AYA if you watch their past awards shows you can see how they always show a rearragement from their songs and they definitely will do it again with AYA. Their producer mention before how DINGGA just a song that you listen too while AYA is the song where you put your focus on their performance. Well they are right althought i have been watching all their live stages again and again i still found myself getting absorbed by their performance and found myself clapping after they finish performing. For this comeback the most obvious change you can see is how they completely abandoned their HAND MIC. For the past 6 years mamamoo have been focused on vocal based performance singing all out in every performance so when they slowly put their hand mic (HIP is their first time in their 7 years career using head mic) they really want to showcase their improvement in dancing. The choreo for this time are much harder than hip theres a lot of hand movement, more fast steps and more dancing. They are known for coming up with their own choreo since debut, the choreo that would match their stamina because they focus more on vocal. So when they finally coming back with more dance based performance we can clearly see how they really jump out from their comfort zone. Rather than sticking with what they are famous for they decide to challenge themselves with this new song 'AYA'. they got this title 'belismamoo' means believe and listen to mamamoo, so maybe they wanna come out from that and show that they can do more than singing. They really improve a lot in their dancing.
So the reason why they put inst more at the chorus rather than vocal driven they probably wanna catch a breath in between because this group always sing live whenever they perform. and just like i said they wanna show more dance based performance wanting viewers to focus more on their dance rather than vocal only.
the music is inspired by arabian song
saw one comment talking about queendom, totally agree on how the group like gidle, omg, lovelyz showcasing their great performance every week and it probably inspired mamamoo to do the same, make them wanna try new things challenging themselves with all this dance based performance. this definitely are new things that they do, they know aya wont do well they know there will be a lot of ppl wont really like aya but this is mamamoo they do the opposite way they do what they want as long as its not wrong they do what they love to do and thats what make they stand out from all other groups.

I love Mamamoo one vocals, two...they improve and move on to a new sound , they go out of a comfort sound. They trie new versatile music genres, and that means growing up, evolve, walk a new path and I love that. They are not your cute pinky one genre girl group. They are artist period...vocals, wrown up woman that performe new sound every time. And I love them for this and moore.

Their instrumental chorus was I believe inspired by Indian music because I'm Indian and the instrument as far as my knowledge goes is flute and I've heard such instrumental before also when they performed in music shows I can't remember which one but the melody that came before their song was definitely pure Indian traditional music and I was also able to understand the lyrics of that melody. I understand why some people didn't like the chorus but I absolutely love it maybe because it was more on the traditional side of our culture. We had such instrument melody in 90s music and Indians love that kind of music but nowadays it's not common to see such instrument driven melody in Indian songs also.

I think the instrumental part of the chorus was my favorite thing about this song ahaha, and i usually hate instrumental choruses. I think because it was inspired by Arabic/indian music which is from my culture so its a very familiar sound for me. But I understand why some pple may be turned away from it.

i agree lmao. so many people are talking about how “risky and experimental” the song is, but it seems pretty familiar to me😅 like everything from the structure of the song to the melodies themselves makes a lot of sense to me. i think people just aren’t used to hearing so many Middle Eastern/South Asian elements in pop music. Being of south asian descent, however, I’ve been hearing this kind of sound in contemporary bollywood music pretty much my entire life lol.

I've seen AYA MV many times and watched the comments including some of the MAMAMOO comments on it. From what I've understood, the song is about breaking up coldly. Like it was a pain that you realise it's not that hard if you took it from the root. At the beginning the pace is slow, wondering if it's tears or just the rain but there's no rain on the MV, just tears. Only one tear, that reminds me of Solar in an recent video saying that "You only worth one tear from me".
Then at the end the beat starts fasting up in a brazilian folk rythm mixing some moves that reminds me the Garotas dance (Im not brazilian but i like to see those dances, please correct me if i'm wrong. It's just my impression) and the lyrics say that it starts dropping (The tears) like you are releaving pain through the cry. The dancers join them and it reminds me a celebration dance which also says "Happy ending, my love for you drops to the ground" like she overcomed the pain after that.
Regarding the individual concepts I only know part of Solar's since she said a bit in her last video. She choosed the concept inspired in the serie "A Chinese Ghost Story" since she said that the song has that kind of vibes and regarding the monobrow, she choosed it inspired in a picture of Frida Kahlo not because of the lyrics of the song nor the meaning, but her uniqueness that made Solar think it will fit the concept and the song. Which I think is pretty accurate since the song is TRULY UNIQUE.
From my point of view, the MV and the song development is such a gem. It's not like kpop, it doesn't feel like that. I just hope the world is ready for this concept because its really a masterpiece. This song gets better every time you listen and the choreo is GENIUS. I'm a Moomoo and I'm proud of how they keep growing and taking challenges like this. No one does it like MAMAMOO, that's for sure.
EDIT: Please react to their album Travel. Its really a whole new experience. There's a song that's really experimental in a very good way.

It’s interesting how polarising this song is, especially at the first listen. I LOVED the chorus in Aya, and the instrumentals were fantastic. There is something about the Middle Eastern influence that just is so enticing. I understand how it is a more unconventional sound for some, but I love seeing Mamamoo respectfully incorporating the music of other cultures in such an interesting way. Their vocals, as usual, sound great, and I think seeing them go with this more mature, sensual style is so fun.

Watched recent videos of Mamamoo explaining the song. The tombstones with "tooth" on it refers to their lyrics "썩은 이빨 뽑아내야지 아야" (썩은 이빨 뽑아내야지 아야) which were sung by Hwasa and Solar. During their interview, they said that the rotten tooth pertains to a lover that is not loving you anymore. It's like a rotten tooth in a sense that you have to pull it now because it'll hurt more if you'll just leave it there since it's already rotten. So Hwasa's like the one showing that one.
Wheein, on one hand, she's the one that lights up the lamps in the MV. From the start of the MV until that part when Hwasa said "And it’s over 끝났어
" (And it's over, it's over) and then Wheein said "남은 감정도 없어" (I have no feelings left), the lamps in the room where she was in weren't lit anymore. I guess for the most part of the song, Wheein's character was trying to show that she was trying to make the relationship last by even lighting it up on her own buuuut, it won't last if it won't. She has no feelings left since the rotten tooth was already pulled out.
For Solar's unibrow, it was explained in her Solarsido episode that she wanted to show a futuristic and highly artistic woman just like Frida Kahlo. The inspo for the styling was from Chinese ghost story because she feels like it was the vibes of the song itself. ☺
I'm very happy when Form of Therapy reacts to Mamamoo's songs heheheh. Your reviews are very insightful. Your reviews dwell on the lyrics, artistic aspect, and composition of the songs. That's why I always watch out for your reviews on Mamamoo's songs hehehe.

The song's lyrics refer to how you remove a tooth when it gets rotten as a metaphor for removing a rotten person or situation from your life. That's what Hwasa's tooth tombs are about. They're the parts of the bad man (or her relationship with him) that she's removed from her life. She had the tombs as sort of mementos of why she got away and needs to stay away, but now she's done with all that. So she's destroying even the tombs, to remove all traces of the jerk from her life.
The song is clearly influenced by Middle Eastern music, and that explains some things that seem otherwise confusing to most viewers. The abrupt change to a frantic tempo at the end is a common feature of the Sufi Semazen, more commonly known as "whirling dervishes," an Islamic prayer/meditation dance that starts out slowly, but then the dancers start spinning and whirling almost out of control, to rid a person of ego or personal desires, and bring them closer to perfection. That motif fits with the general concept of the song itself, of getting rid of bad influences (like an unreliable lover) to become a better person. And of course all the visuals feed into the Middle-Eastern sensibility as well.

It was Yongsun's idea (the unibrow). She's always looking for new ways to express how anything/anyone and everyone is beautiful in their own way (like the bald cap in Spit It Out), and the unibrow is how she decided to do it this time. In fact, on her second to last Solarsido episode about this, we found out that their CEO had NO IDEA she was doing this and she was NOT planning on telling him. It wasn't until their manager found out and told her she should at least send him a video for him to approve and he ended up doing so, of course.
