    Mamamoo have a project where in 1 year they are releasing an album for each member. Yellow Flower was for Hwa Sa, Red Moon was for Moonbyul and Blue;s is for Solar. In three months time, White Wind (or something like that) will be released for Wheein. Hey PD, love your reactions. You have a hell of a radio voice. Smooth! Cool!

      @@crazydiamond1273 dude... anything can be a common language, as long as the majority speaks it. It can be both a dialect and the common language. Cantonese, the dialect from the south could have been the "common language" had it not fall short in votes after the revolution. Nonetheless, it still doesn't change the fact that Mandarin is from the northern barbarians.
      "After the Revolution of 1911, national father Sun Yat-Sen and other founding members of new China vote to decide which language should be spoken. While Mandarin was a Northern dialect spoken by Qing officials, it was seen as a language of 'invaders'. In the end, Cantonese lost out by one vote."

      that's not 'traditional mandarin' it's traditional chinese 。in hong kong we speak cantonese not mandarin 。the written form is chinese but the spoken form is different 。

    This song is like the night ver. of Starry Night. The difference is that Starry Night was brighter, with more natural scenes filmed outside. While wind flower is filmed more in a city at night time

    You hit the nail on the head with the Hong Kong cinema influence, fans have been drawing similarities between certain scenes from certain Hong Kong movies to scenes in the MV and a lot of them believe that they were heavily inspired by all of that because the production crew of the MV were also posting a lot of pictures of old polaroids from the Hong Kong cinema era as well. Loved the reaction!

    I think partly why this video had a lot of blue tones in it is because of the album concept? The album this time is blue;s which stands for blue sun. egotistic had a lot of reds because that song was in the album, red moon. then starry night had a lot of yellow, because that was in the album, yellow flower.

      I realised that in Hwasa's scene, there were many yellow, in moonbyul's bridge, there were many red ribbon(?), in Wheein scene, there were many white (wearing white clothes and daytime scene) and during the part where Solar was in an underground tunnel, it was blue toned.

    I forgot to mention this on the Red Velvet reaction but I appreciate that you give songs another listen. Over the years as a K-pop fan, I have had to learn how I listen and interact with songs and MVs. I use to be really hard on girl group and wouldn’t like them if they were too cute or too sexy. I listened to some of the songs now and wonder how I missed that it was a bop. I have also learned that I am heavily influenced by the visuals of the MV which can either make me love a song more or dismiss it.

    Awesome reaction PD, I'm so happy that you figured out so many references! Just as an fyi, it was recently revealed that the 4seasons concept wasn't all supposed to happen in one year, but rather over the course of multiple years (presumably 2). However, the articles released during the announcement of the concept were misleading and indicated that all four season comebacks would happen back to back. Since fans got so excited, Mamamoo and RBW decided to go along with it and do all four right after each other in order not to disappoint. This explains why each comeback seems so close to each other and why they may feel kind of rushed. Despite this, Mamamoo was still able to come out with strong releases, which I think is extremely impressive.

    wowwwww I am so happy that they reference lots of Hong Kong movies and cinema influence in that. Some singers just took the music video for nothing, or maybe the "crowded" city scene. As a HongKonger, it feels so good that there is an actual meaning of the location that music video taking from.

  • @kudgeond755
    @kudgeond755 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    As you probably know Mamamoo is releasing 4 mini-albums during the year-long 4 seasons/4 colors project so Blue;S is not really a quick comeback - if anything it's a bit on the late side since it's the fall album. The winter/white album featuring Wheein will probably come out in 3 months.
    Thanks for all the info about the influence of HK cinema on this MV. You might want to check out the teaser for a scene that's not in the MV - they're betting roses while playing an intense mahjong game in a scene that reeks with HK gangster noir. Hwasa is a total Leslie Cheung fangirl and if I recall correctly A Better Tomorrow is her fave film. I watched a lot of HK flicks back in the 80's, esp anything produced or directed by Tsui Hark (Peking Opera Blues was my fave). They were as much of a revelation to me back then as my discovery of kdramas a few years ago and I think they had an enormous influence on the freewheeling "anything goes" aesthetic in Korean film & tv and kpop MV production.

      If you can understand Chinese, there is a Taiwan Moomoo she explained more about the song, about the lyrics (the metaphor inside) , also the 2 rapping part lyrics wrote in 2 different korean way to express that explain the meaning and emotion of the song more clear. She also said the reason to film it in HK because of the atmosphere of HK at night that help to reflect of the loneliness after the break up. It is a really good clip to explain such thing as I don't understand Korean that I have missed a lot from the song and lyrics (based on translation from someone else only).

    • @kudgeond755
      @kudgeond755 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@muse_solar_kys3358 I only know a few words in Chinese and couldn't find the video - it's probably titled in Chinese too. There's also a vid by an HK moomoo about the locations and another one that shows scene comparisons to Wong Kar-wai films. I agree that HK was a good choice and that they did a nice job of using the settings and lighting to reinforce the emotions of the song. Some shots reminded me of Kowloon in the 80's - doesn't look like its changed much. The graininess that PD pointed out also makes it seem like an old home movie so that added a sense of realism to the queasiness and desperation of the unsettling, unnatural neon lights. This MV is so unlike the fantasy land MVs that most girl groups release.

    So the lower quality was on purpose, right?
    Did you see Moonbyul's Buffy the Vampire Slayer t-shirt?
    I did catch some retro vibes, the cassette tape reminded me of Loona's retro videos, especially Vivi's solo. There they used overexposed lighting (not sure the correct term) that was common in the 90's.
    Some fan explained nostolgia to the 90's is extra special in Korea because they got freedom, modernization, democracy, TV and international influence in an accelerated pace. Probably like four decades of cultural development in one! It also explains why they kinda skipped a radio / album era and dove straight into a TV / music video era, making videos a more important aspect than in other countries.
