Outdoor lighting should Not exceed 2700 - 3000 Kelvin. And preferably aim for 1800 - 2400 Kelvin. The offending lights seem to be somewhere between 5000 - 6000 Kelvin or more. These lights were installed with little to no concern for the health and well-being of the public or the environment..., the only concern was that of saving money. The thing is LEDs come in every color under the rainbow. They are most beneficial in shielded, frosted, enclosures that distribute the light more evenly and are best in colors of Amber, Yellow, Red, Very Soft and Warm White light. These lights cause retinal damage over time and disrupt circadian rhythms by suppressing melatonin production. There is a reason that we have a daytime and a nighttime. These lights cause distracting and dangerous blinding glare to motorists and pedestrians alike therefore increasing the chances of an accident. Besides that, these lights are harmful to nesting and migrating birds, nocturnal pollinators, insects, flora and fauna, sea turtles, etc, etc. And as far as security is concerned, over-illumumination is a false sense of security. There is a big difference between feeling safe and actually being safe. Criminals will engage in their favorite activities at ANY time of the day or night and regardless of lighting. Just pay attention to the news when there are security cameras recording, you'll see crimes being committed for the most part, under well-lit conditions. The only prevention to crime is good policing and vigilance by neighbors and business owners. Actual neighborhood crime watch not one of those cute neighborhood crime watch signs. These lights must be adjusted for the health and well-being of people and ecosystems. On top of that, they are ugly, destroy the charm and character of a residential neighborhood, they look cheap and create a prison yard atmosphere.

It seems odd that to me that people are willing to trade the whole night time experience and all that entails , for merely lighting up the neighbourhood like cheap office just to gain a feeling of safely.
their life must have high degree of fear and poor vision.

@@ashbydav - I'd say it's not the Kelvin rating but the colour/frequency that is the problem. But with this proviso I'd agree with what you say. There has been no concern shown for people or wildlife. It is an outrage.

It's natural to have darkness when it's night! Night time has only been around approx 8 billion years! Shows the ego of people who defend glaring Street lights at night because they make an area "safe".

I hadn't seen it as an ego thing but I think you're probably right. Such selfishness requires an ego of some considerable size.

The older you get lights will get brighter at your eyes tell me aboit it and now cars are insanely brighter for no reason there are idiots that they put even brighter headlights on their cars which is stupid that can be a potential for an accident when drivers can get blinded.

There are a lot of people who have visual processing systems that are not at all compatible with the new bright LED lights. Just a few examples are some migraine sufferers, people with photophobia from dry eyes or autoimmune disease, people with post traumatic stress injuries, people with autism, people with genetically high levels of sensory processing sensitivity etc etc. That's a lot of people, but the people who are not affected just seem to not believe the suffering of others. And then there is the detrimental effect of more blue light pollution on ecosystems, and the health effects on humans (metabolic issues, mood issues, sleep issues etc).

Fix this problem by installing energy saving low maintenance high pressure sodiums which last for years to come, LED’s don’t make it one month without turning purple or flashing, high pressure sodiums produce a nice warm light and if they are dying the bulbs will cycle which they stay on for about 20 seconds and stay off for about 10 seconds, it gives a signal that the bulb is dying and won’t give people seizures unlike LED’s and if an led streetlight fails then the whole fixture must be replaced, so remember that LED’s are unreliable and towns shouldn’t replace them, high pressure sodiums are very reliable, let’s stop the spread of led streetlights

What a terrible tragedy. We must all keep fighting back. Bright white light is a profoundly stupid idea and demonstrates a complete lack of care for wildlife.
