  • The US and Europe have tried to make Africa a battleground in their Cold War against Russia and China. They‘ve even labeled Africa as NATO’s “Southern Neighborhood” and are using AFRICOM as a mechanism to control the continent under the guise of protecting it from malign Chinese and Russian influence.
What does this mean for sovereignty and independence across Africa and how are African countries pushing back? To help break it all down Rania Khalek was joined by Mikaela Nhondo Erskog, a researcher at the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research and a member of No Cold War and the Dongsheng News Collective.
Article discussed in the episode: Africa Does Not Want to Be a Breeding Ground for the New Cold War

You are naive too to think just because China not had the opportunity to colonize Africa, they won't do it now. China is no better than America, China, UK, France, Germany, Portugal, etc. You must take charge and management your own resources and be responsible to your own people. China do not, repeat, China do not like Africans. In fact, your people wants to dictate how and what Africans should think. So just stop it and go back to China.

@@birdsfire3638 You don't know anything about the history of either China or Africa.
China did have the opportunity to colonize Africa and they did not. During the Ming Dynasty a Chinese Admiral sailed around the world with a huge navy with ships the size of football fields each capable of carrying over 1500 men and hundreds of horses hundreds of canyons.
China then had the largest and most sophisticated navy in the world far larger than the British Navy when Britain was at its peak and Britannia ruled the waves.
The Chinese had flamethrowers, muskets and canyons and all together numbered over 30 000 to 40 000 men whenever they sailed together in a huge armada.
They often used to sail and trade with the African City states on East Africa off the coast of the Indian where Tanzania and Mozambique are right now.
Instead of invading and colonizing these places they came and traded and opened diplomatic relations with them.
They exchanged gifts and exchanged letters between Chinese high ranking officials and their local rulers.
Even today if you go to East Africa at the ruins of these city states you will be able to find Chinese coins and pots.
Africans also sailed in trad and diplomatic missions to India, Middle East and China.
The Chinese did the same with the Indian Kingdoms in the Indian sub continent, South East Asia, Middle East.
They came, they traded and opened diplomatic relations and left.
Then later a emperor came to power who decided to burn the entire Chinese navy and cut all contact with the outside world because he said the outside world was corrupting Chinese values and society.
China is over 4000 years old. They have never fought a single war outside their hemisphere. Each Chinese family has mearly 1 child. Do you really think they are going to make Chinese families send their only one son around the world to fight and die to dominate other nations and peoples.
The only place they would be willing to fight and die for is Taiwan. China ain't going to send their sons to fight and die to conquer any far away land.
It's not part of their culture or values. Its the West's

Not good to describe others as they do not know anything......You do not seem to realize that the one-child policy of China is communist and only inacted after 1948?. Before that all of China like anywhere else in the world "baby making machines".....Question! If China is forever so great how come parts of its mainland was seized by the Soviets( border skirmishes in the 1970s), by the Japanese (thanks to the surrender of Japan to the USA in 1945), the Mongolian and in the last 150 years by the Portuguese, the French and the British.....? In fact, the Europeans particularly the British like in other parts of the world hesitated the interland and were never really interested in the colonialism of mainland China but to trade with its huge population hence Hong Kong was founded.....Right or wrong, Mr China expert? Thank you.

"Private capital misbehaves. Private capital misbehaves everywhere in the world."
There are certainly cases where Chinese private capital have done terrible things in Africa, but the important point is that the Chinese state actively cracks down on such cases so that Chinese-African relations can be improved. Can the same be said of the private capital and the state of the imperialist countries?

When it comes to understanding of Russo-African and China-Africa relations the context goes much further than the current geopolitical climate. China isn't coming to Africa for the first time. The two have had trade relationships since before US even existed, further back to the spice trade. It only froze in the last century. The hesitance of Africa to be firm on Russia apart from current economic necessity, also goes further back to the cold war.
When it was happening, a lot of African countries were fighting for indipendence. A lot of African indipendence movements were funded and aided by Russia, China and the pro-communist block. Some went to Russia and Cuba for education and for protection from European colonialists. Naturally, the African governments that came immediately after became Pro-Russia and Pro-socialist. With fall of USSR the faith in communism waned and many turned to US led capitalism. However sentimentality towards Russia remains for the previously mentioned reasons. It's disturbing that we seem to be hurtling towards a similar situation again. And that the west's attitude towards Africa remains imperialist in nature. Honestly, I thought we'd gotten to a place where this was over, but guess not.

    • @winniethuo9736
      @winniethuo9736 ปีที่แล้ว

Every analysis is full of biases. Change is instant and begins with thinking globally but acting locally. The society is you and me and we have caused this mess by making what our experiences are our identity. If the challenge of change is to be dilute, and if going back to the drawing board becomes a thing it must start with how we individually respond to that knowledge that advice us at the moment. A system does survive due to its beuracraces but it also does not make room for those who desire change and that's why one must do it alone and rip the benefits or experience the consequence that may tighten ones desire to be critical of any approach to change.

Very cogent analysis by Mikaela and then very worrisome for Africa. On the one hand, leaders voices from Africa are encouraging suggesting that they recognize the new scramble, but on the other hand nearly 30 African states out of 54 are hosting US military bases and posts! In the recent US-Africa several states have signed long-term mineral agreements that will support military-industrial adventurism of US and Europe in Africa. It is rich analysis like this on hypocrisy and double-handedness that should be more visible to more African leaders. Pursuing national goals individually expose each African state to manipulation! Be ware. Mikaela continue your brilliant analysis and activism and Raina continue to host speakers like Mika.

The USSzr had military bases in Africa as well. Russia also has Wagner Group killing africas, taking diamonds and supporting despotic African leaders. Soon Chinese and Russian troops will be deployed to protect their interests in Africa and this channel will pit out vids justifying it. Africas hatred for the west is clouding its judgment and letting in foreign entities that will use them just the same.

Secondly, Africa’s biggest elephant in the room is still itself. No outsider can solve Africa’s most fundamental social riddles but itself. Our collective leadership needs to set in motion a moment of reckoning for our continent. We desperately need to sing from the same hymn sheet as soon as possible. Compromises and sacrifices will be needed to unlock Africa’s true potential. Selfless leadership amongst other strategies will be required to make this a reality. The question is whether Africa is ready, willing and mature enough to do the right things for itself. One of our key decisions is going to be our priority of national versus continental sovereignty. Either has its pros and cons. The key question will be which is more important. My feeling is that our individual countries are not strong enough to mount a challenge of the world order on their own. But as continent of 1 billion souls or more, we have immense potential to redefine life on this planet in a fundamental and long lasting way

My advice to Africa is this: be careful to go to bed with someone who has hurt you deeply for centuries before. And who still benefit hugely from the pain of your back. The minimum way those who have hurt and scarred you so much before; can even think of regaining any semblance of your trust, should be through meaningful repatriations for the hurt they have caused you before, and continue to exploit today. The minimum should be to clear all debt. Create fair markets, and invest in the development of our people at least through high level education. The fact the majority of the continent still owes European nations and their allies the USA colonial debts to this day, is sufficient proof to be extremely careful of them. They are not courting Africa because they care about it. Until a dramatic change of scenery happens; I would advise Africa to stay far away from them.
Has Russia, the Soviet Union or China ever enslaved and tortured Africans before? No. Have they come to our defence meaningfully before? Yes… this is not a complicated topic or discussion. It just needs lucid thinking. In my opinion does not warrant further debate. Africa should make its demands and stay firm. The ball should be in their court.
Strengthen your sovereignty Africa, and build relationships that will work for you. It is your turn to shine. Do not lose the opportunity.
