Long, long ago, when the Discovery Network made good documentaries, they sponsored this one. Hard to believe that now, alas.
This is a thoughtful and moving film regarding a tragedy that, despite the inevitability of the conquest of lands held by aboriginal Americans, needn't have happened.

OMG! They talked about Gus Bighorse! Gus is my husband +Max Bighorse 's paternal grandfather. Orphaned as child and joins the Navajo to help fight the US Calvary. Gus soon becomes to lieutenant to Chief Manuelito and he was instrumental in hiding thousands of Navajo in Grand Canyon and Navajo Moutain. None of the Western Agency Navajos did not make The Long Walk to Bosque Redondo in Fort Sunmer, NM.

@@JC-tv5zx Don't act like the Victim, I can't stand people like you, Navajos were being raided by The Pueblos, And Utes and Mexicans and Spanish. What were Navajos supposed to do get exterminated and taken advantage of by these tribes and the Spanish and Mexicans. The Spanish encounter the Navajos in 1541 and chronicle there encounter as peaceful who treaded with certain Pueblo tribes. Infact it was the Spanish Francisco Vazquez de Coronado that took a Navajo women as Slaves. So don't give me that bullshit that the European were peaceful well wiping out the Tainos in the Caribbeans.

I have watched the entire series of How the West was Lost and the US Government and its officials of that period of time should have hung their heads in shame for the way they treated the indigenous nation. Progress yes, education yes, but the way it was carried out and delivered was utterly shameful. Absolutely no attempt to understand their way of life and beliefs, no attempt to reach a compromise, just cruelty throughout those years to all the tribes across the landscape. May God bless their souls. 🇬🇧

I really like this series. A bit hard to watch in places because the Native people of this continent were treated and massacred. I am very surprised the TRUE story of Native American history in this country was ever made much less aired. Kudos to the Discovery Channel for doing it. It opens a lot of people's eyes to the real story, not the tainted story.

The US' effort to eliminate the Diné culture may not be as famous as that against the Apache, Lakota, Cheyenne or Cherokee, but it was not less insanely violent and cruel.

this is a truly great documentary. never in my life have I ever seen a show that was hosted by white men, where they as descendants of colonists, admitted their sins. call it what you want, but genocide of people, languages, teachings, and CULTURE is what I call a sin. Yet many of these white people still can't admit they were wrong. and this is why I love this documentary so much.

These stories and the previous one. Make me ashamed of my race. They only did what they had to do to keep what was rightfully theirs. That is what native Americans mean . I have never seen photo of an Indian, with a smile. Now i understand why.

who would? Who would want to know that earlier in history before being born in that time that the NDN's who people grew up watching on TV (people that they grew to Love) had such bad treatment done to them by there relatives? Today people are Loving each other more....thank God....Thank God for true nature of people .....to see others as themselves...not suppressing their Love in themselves....I've had this experience.... it does not mean that I think that there are no people in the world that think the same as hateful people did ...they will die off in heart failure...but I know there are many more people in the world who Love there relatives...the fight is for whatever is right and fair

What they don’t really speak about is how they use Navajo enemies, other natives especially utes to fight Navajos, white people really didn’t do any fighting. I don’t know what much about the civil war but confederates declaring war on the union was really stupid thing to do in the first place. Union was a great industrial power, confederate industry couldn’t even compare. I hate it when these confederates sympathizers at like wheraboos acting like what they had was epic. Too bad southerners couldn’t go west because of Comanches, it had to take a union general “Ranald McKenzie” to beat the “Indian” problem. But yeah it sucked my people really did suffer during the long walk, was the last great slave raid in North America. Was over 3000 people died, but what doesn’t get mentioned often is how much Navajos were displaced, most never returned. But I do agree we dont deserve reparation, we did recover after long walk.
