- Today I will show you how to make art stencils using hot glue. I was inspired to do this after seeing the hot glue drawing my kids made on my silicone mad and realized that they would be wonderful stencils. The cling well to the paper and keep ink from seeping under. I hope you give this craft a try!
You will need:
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
silicone mat
Directions: Draw a design with hot glue on the mat. Let cool. Peel it up and use as a stencils with spray ink, paints or whatever you like to stencil with! Happy crafting!

GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank your children for me because they are BRILLIANT!
Now my sister can draw all the designs I love and can "trace" my own stencils with hot glue! Your are hero! 3 stars for Lindsey! Thanks for all the inspiration and help. xxx
My hot glue gun is right up there with double-sided tape and my food processor so whenI watched this video a couple of days ago and knew I had to try making stencils. I've just been in the garage making a couple of stencils while my mind was bombarding me with possibilities. Frugal is my middle name - it may even be my first name! Brilliant idea. Thanks so much, Lindsay.
you have no idea the whole new world you have opened up for me.... A WHOLE NEW WOOOOOOOOOOOORLD!!!!! A DAZZLING PLACE I NEVER KNEWWWWW.......
This has given my kids going on 2 hours of total fun. Thank you so much for your channel! Homeschool mama props!!!
Yes it is awfully fun. I made some earrings few years ago and a great bracelet !
You can paint on it too : acrylic, nail polish, glitter ... almost any thing you want.
But as you always say ;"don't burn your fingers" !
Great video, have fun Lindsay !
I love how excited you sound about this,
you can feel how much you enjoy this.
I always look forward to your commentaries... you make me giggle. I tend to ramble down different pathways when I talk too, so I'm glad there are others that talk fast and keep it fresh. Thanks again for a great video.
Your fun personality matches your fun projects!
+Pj Lewis thanks!
hi great idea. how do you make the inks please
blick liquid watercolor plus water to achieve the color you want. stamps dye based Reinkers can be used as well.
Whoever thought of it, it is a crazy cool idea! Glad you shared it. I can't wait to try it! TFS...Bobbie
This seems like a good idea for kids, especially the circle and heart stencils. I know my youngest sibling would love these for his stuff, maybe they would be good for glitter because that is his favorite.
I have never been able to post or reply on you tube until I watched a video from Laylas tips and tricks on how to fix the issue. Just in case anyone else might be having this issue. I love to watch the frugal crafter. Fun and stimulates my creativity. Thank you!
Beautiful results. I teach I kids and they will love this. Thank you!
The tree page looks like an underwater coral scene to me! Lol. it's nice. Super cute.
Not Rich, it's wife Sandy, tried this technique and it worked great. Couldn't believe how easy and terrific results..thanks.
So glad I watched your video, great ideas and something my daughter and I can do together x Thank you for sharing your ideas brilliant xxx
I may have said this before, but I love your flair and elan. Don't change anything in your presentations ...... they are perfect just the way you do them ...... and so are you!
Jazzy JEC aww, thank you:)
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich ,,,
Well said Jazzy! Lindsay you are in a class of your own! I get so much out of your videos. Thank you!
You make the clouds look so easy! I would love a painting tutorial with that cloud stencil!
I’ve just started getting into crafting, as I want to try something new just for myself at home. I’ve been following you for a couple of weeks now and I’ve had absolutely no idea how much stencils could cost. To add, some very bland and ccookie cutter boring.
I cannot wait to start creating my own stencils. Thanks for sharing and I love your happy spirit.
I'm definitely going to attempt the heart one. I have a small heart stencil, but I need a larger one. Thanks for another wonderful tutorial!
Just in time... I was deliberatinghow much i was going to spend in buying stencils... Now I know how much! NOTHING!!!!!!! Well... glue sticks, which is much cheaper and gives me room to create! Thank you for your frugal ideas; it saves us soooo much money and time!
I know you did this a while ago, but I finally did it today, what fun I had...I even made one of a tic tac toe ...can't wait to use them now....thanks Lindsay! I love everything you do and love listening to your voice. You make me wake up and want to create just listening to all your energy!!!!
Oh what fun! I'll definitely be making some. I especially like the trees and the hearts. and the clouds lol TFS~ Pat
Great idea. I love stencils and I'm definitely going to be making these. Love the circle one the best.
I enjoyed listening to you. Nice to hear someone not take herself so seriously!! Great ideas!
Your videos are awesome. I love how you just "do it" no matter what happens in the background from your home. It feels like listening to a friend just talk and come up with cool ideas. This one is GREAT!!! I don't have a lot of money to purchase stencils however I have 2 hot glue guns (because I actually lost one once) and lots of glue sticks. Guess what I am going to make this afternoon!!! Thank you so much for sharing.
Another great video. Thanks Lindsay for all the cool techniques.
You just amaze me more and more. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I have learned more from you than any other crafter and I feel that you have such a sweet heart. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your heart.
Same. Ooooh colors lol
My aunt would decorate birthday cakes using food coloring and a toothpick. Her fingers were always multi- colored
I made ones spelling out my granddaughters' names then made signs for their doors. They loved it They can be painted with acrylics as well. Lots of inexpensive fun. Thanks for the video.
OMG, I so enjoy watching you!! The goofier the better!! I just did some hot glue stencils a couple weeks ago but hadn't thought of trees so thanks for that! Hope by now you are well rested! Really appreciate you!
You're a wild n' crazy gal......but I love watching you, Lindsay!! I especially loved this video on making your own stencils - they're so expensive to buy and your's came out really great! You inspire me - really!
This was wonderful! I have never seen this before. And you have me so excited to try it.
Brilliant idea! I love it! Thank You, Lindsey!
I love the trees and clouds, well done.
Thank you so much Lindsay, I really really love 💕 how those hot glue stencils came out. Stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Good evening Lindsay from Australia. I bumped into your video and found it rather fun, not just what you do with hot glue but also your pleasant personality as well. To be honest, I am not as you would say, a crafter...however you have given me an idea for my art work. Some of the time I use Plaster of Paris on my art as a base and I also use Silicon tubes, the ones plumbers use to fix up leaks in bathrooms...I use the silicon then I paint it in gold paint (the gold paint they use to fix up Chinese antique furniture). But now, you have provided me with an extra dimension to my canvases....Thus, I am very grateful. You keep at it because you really are delightful, and I have learned something even at my age....Hugs from Australia..
that was so much fun watching you spray the colors and look at the finished product!!
What a great idea! I can't wait to try this. The results are so cool.
Love your technique, what a great way to creating your own design in stencils very clever love them, Thanks for the Inspiration 💕
That is fantastic. The design possibilities are endless.
Great techniques.....love the patterned paper towels, too!!!
Just located this 2014 Hot Glue Gun stencils! Yep looks way, cool, Lindsay. TFS!❤️👍🏾☃️❄️
This is brilliant! Thank you for sharing your creativity and saving me so much money and time. I look forward to your videos, you keep me inspired!
Oh man! I just discovered art journaling/mixed media and I get so excited to see all these new tips and tricks :D thank you for this great idea! :)
I love your videos - no thumping house music, just your cheerful self and clever, easy to follow ideas. Thank you :-)
wow just wow totally love love love the clouds one and the great spiderweb! Need to make some!
I love, love, love this because stencils are so expensive and you can't always find the stencils you want. I love your wackadoo approach to this video as well, I bet you are loads of fun.
I love, love, love this idea! And the trees kinda look like coral under the sea! Thanks so much for sharing this and all of your wonderful ideas!
Ooooh, and then combine it on a card as coral with seashells and sea life stamps and dies. The ideas are coming. Thanks again! Take care!
Thanks so much for this idea, it's saved me loads of money in the long run. I've found it works best when moving slowing with the flow of glue.
Your trees would make great seaweed for a seascape - love your enthusiasm, even when sleep deprived - happy days
lindsay is soooooooooooo cool and down to earth with her lessons, really fun and smart ideas. thank you. peace
Love your frugal ways! Thank you for all your hard work and time.
+Texasyarnlover thanks for the comment and your support:-)
I love all your creations and the way you can find ways of saving money! It is always a big plus in my book!
I am new here but am a lifelong and very experienced crafter. I honestly thought this was going to be a big old hot mess when I saw the topic but darn if you didn't do a great job with the stencils- especially the hearts and spider web. I agree that the journaling spots turned out pretty cool as well. I think the glue is heavier than the plastic you get on commercial stencils hence you don't get the under leaking which is an added bonus.
you will learn not to doubt me Danee, LOL:)
Danee Kaplan hahaaa
sorry Dana. wasn't laughing at you. was laughing at the comment not to doubt her !
I was new at the time...I didn't know the perfection of Lindsay then. Now I understand!
Danee Kaplan :-)
Oh I see word and name stencils in my future. Those kids of yours are geniuses.
Cool! Your tutorial made me very interested in trying this technique! Thanks
WOW and this is from 3 years ago. I guess I really have been kinda sad from my mom passing and not staying tuned in with Lindsay :' ( But, I have seen so many new and fun things for me to do with my 6 teen-age granddaughters! this will really be cool for some of their journal pages! Fun, Fun, Fun, Lindsay Thanks for sharing all the time. Much Love and Blessings to ya, Your Painting and Coloring friend Vicki
By far my favorite craft channel! Lindsey, you are such a talent. I love watching your videos.
Oh jeez, Lindsay, one more thing I need to try today......Love it. I'm crazy for stencils and never seem to have just what I need. Now hopefully I will.
awesome! Thanks Lindsay :) What a great idea! I LOVE how your left page came out, when you put the circles over your splatters. Looked really good. Thanks so much for sharing, happy crafting :)
What a great idea!! I made stencils with my imagine and acrylic, but was limited to "normal" shapes. Can't wait to try this after the doctor! Thanx. Great video!!
I bet you could use the clear kitchen mats from the Dollar store. Maybe you could even print a design on the computer and slip it underneath the mat and trace over it with the glue gun. Gonna try that to make some clouds cause I am not a gifted artist like the wonderfully talented Frugal Crafter and I will definitely try the trees. Coolest thing I have seen in a long time. Thanks.
NO dont use clear kitchen mats from the dollar store the glue works as glue on that surface and will NOT come off. You need to use a silicone mat. I speak from experience. I tried it by mistake and ended up with a permanent image on the kitchen mat.
Just made a bunch of hot glue stencils using the kitchen mats from the dollar tree. They are the set of 2 flexible chopping mats and they worked awesome. Maybe mine were a different brand but I even made a tree on them and it came off fine.
henrycruiser Thanks for the tip. The kitchen mats worked for me too.
What a great idea! I've seen hot glue used for molds, but not stencils. I love it! I love the way you rolled the paper towels over the wet paint, it created a cool design. Debbie :)
This is an absolutely fantastic idea! I really love the journaling spot with this oops pieces! Can't wait to give this a try!
Thanks for sharing
*hugs*
JoJo

I made some hot glue stencils on cardboard to use as stencils for making impressions into paperclay ornaments.
WOW! Never thought to use the glue gun to make some unique and original stencils. Almost instantly too since they can cool down fast. Thanks for the idea!
Love this idea! Off to do these stencils, ,, , love, love, love.
