    Co-driving consists of reading hieroglyphics in the name of fast stage times, and no others have finely honed this skill as perfectly as Engineering Explained. Well, none of that's true, but it was an amazing ride! Big thanks to Travis Pastrana and Subaru for the amazing experience, and of course Christian Edstrom for knowledge and track suit!

    They should add a Co-op mode to Dirt Rally in which one player has to call out to his driver. That would be fantastic.

    That looks like a blast. Explain all the engineering of a rally car and why they can jump and a regular car cannot/shouldn't.

    • @Promit
      @Promit 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +the8jrfan Along with the other stuff people said, a rally car's suspension only needs to survive a couple stages. I don't think you'd want to replace your shocks, struts, and mounts every couple hundred miles.

    • @MauriceWijma
      @MauriceWijma 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everybody can make a car that can last those jumps. The real question is if it would benefit the overall speed of the car if they can and do handle jumps.
      By not having to brake for every high crest, they seem to hold better overall speed, so they design the cars to make them able to handle the jumps.

    Rally drivers and co-drivers deserve a whole lot more respect for their line of work. The co-driver needs to simultaneously process, read clearly, and guide the rally driver through these hazardous environments while in a wobbly car with a loud engine running in the front.
    Then the rally driver needs to understand what the co-driver just said in 3-5 seconds, keep the car on the road with that info, and also make sure the two of them don't die in a fiery car crash. That, in my opinion, is one of the hardest jobs in the world.

      David Bernstein Not really a troll if you notice i put a question mark meaning I wasn't 100% sure on that. I forgot he had won a supercross and motorcross title in 2000/2001. All I knew was he didn't race for long before moving onto FMX and other extreme sports. He also never won at the 250cc. Its a bit easier to win at the 125CC level even more so back then. He was good but he didnt stay around long enough to be one of the greats.

    Notice how Travis ALWAYS keeps one hand or the other on the same spot of the steering wheel. Even while staging up at low speed and turning the wheel alot. He keeps one hand planted and puts the other hand over the first, landing about 180 degrees from the planted hand.

    Jason, can you please do a video explaining what you said ???

    • @SonicCB
      @SonicCB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +Mason Samuels If you're referring to the pace notes, they're basically a code for turns and the road ahead. Rally drivers don't often see the course they're driving before they actually drive it, so the pace notes let them know what to prepare for. The Right/Left numbers refer to the severity of a turn. Different drivers use different systems, but I believe Travis uses something similar to this: 6 is a slight turn, 1 is almost 90 degrees. Then you have Square, Acute, and Hairpin for something tighter than a 1. The numbers like "150" and "300" refer to meters (usually) before the next call. When Travis corrected the one call as a "6 tightens to 5", that meant that the turn starts out as a 6, but tightens to a sharper turn. Crest, bump, dip, and jump all refer to exactly that. A crest can also be a "Crest, jump maybe" meaning that depending on speed, you may jump.
      So something like "R6 T5- --> L4 over crest, 150, caution R2 don't cut" would be a slight right getting a bit tighter into an immediate left 4 that goes over a crest, then 150 meters until a fairly tight right turn that has some sort of danger on the inside of the corner, so don't cut the corner.
      I may have made a mistake or two, but that's the basics of pace notes.

      +Corey B I don't know much about the pace notes, and I've never really payed any real attention before, but it seemed to me like the number corresponded with what gear the driver should be in for maximum speed and stuff?

      +Hesster that's a pretty common misconception. You may have to downshift to second in order to make an upcoming 2, but you certainly wouldn't immediately shift to sixth if a 6 came right after that 2.
