    The interesting thing is that the hoarders seem far more willing to admit they have a problem and need help, whereas the OCD cleaners seem almost proud of it and cannot seem to accept that it is incapacitating them.

      my thoughts exactly...this show never seems to infer that theres anything wrong with spending your life inhaling chemical fumes and cleaning things youve never used..a lot of them seem to feel so superior about it.

    • @johannas.l.brushane2518
      @johannas.l.brushane2518 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      I reflected over that as well. I suspect that the hoarders more often may have been made aware at an earlier stage, they can't use the space as to what it's intended for. Friends and family have said that they can't visit etc. Excessive cleaning is not that disturbing to other's around.

      Sometimes I see them judging a woman, sitting in her 'dirty' house with cockroaches in the basement and an overgrown garden.
      And then the other one proudly throws half a bottle of bleach in the toilet.
      And then I hear myself thinking; "One was technically supporting the environment and the other one destroying it. Why don't they berate Mr. Kill-all-the-fish?"

    Poor Michelle in tears because she thought her mum loved cleaning more than her… She is still clearly traumatised even after all the years since she was a child, I hope she can understand that her mum had OCD and could not help but clean it didn’t mean she loved it more than her child.

I can get myself to do anything at home neither with my creativity or my child unless it's clean it doesn't have to be to the extreme but I can't have mess I can't have stuff pile on the table on the floor or anywhere really can't have dirty bathroom ( Although since I moved in with my partner it's been the dirtiest I've been experiencing since my entire life) so always I first have to make sure everything is at least a" little bit clean" before I can even make food for my child..

    I couldn't watch the mother and daughter, they clearly feed off each other's phobia. I don't know if Tuesday has a partner but I'd feel sorry for anyone she might meet as she and her mother would be sterilizing the poor bugger every time he/she popped round. Michelle, bless her, my heart went out to her. How awful that she's had to carry the burden of believing her mother cared more for cleaning and what the neighbours might think than she did of her own daughter! She says she hated her for it yet couldn't let her mother's possessions go. The psyche can be so cruel. I love dogs but I almost vomited when Linda was talking about the stains on the bedroom carpet etc. But it was wonderful to see how she acknowledged she needed to change. Richard certainly worked his magic.

    • @MayaLove666
      @MayaLove666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      It totally can be, if you are raised to believe something is extremely dangerous and terrifying and that's all you've ever known it can be incredibly difficult to see the common sense side of things. However often times its developed as a coping mechanism to deal with stress or loss or any number of mental challenges. You see lots of people develop it after getting out of a relationship or losing a loved one. Often children who have no control over their lives, like the girls raised and participating in REF military, grow up and learn to take control in an unhealthy way like hoarding or obsessive cleaning. Most of these people are born with a predisposition for OCD tendencies and the way they manifest depends on the way they were raised or the struggles they face. That biological aspect could play a part in the fact that it can run in families.

There is also a form of OCD that comes from PANDAS or PANS (acronyms) - which is when the brain becomes inflamed due to streptococcus, Lyme disease and a few other viruses and bacteria. Usually when this is the case the OCD comes on suddenly.

I use eco friendly cleaning liquids, with lemon juice, bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, with Fairy Liquid. Natural things I find are so much better plus I have been ill and I cannot have strong chemicals near me, so natural items clean just as well. • @blakeskywin
    @blakeskywin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    I believe she can have OCD but I also believe that most of it is learned behaviour because if you look at it, they react in the exact same way. She is mirroring the mother. When they went to the first gym, the mom had a reaction when she walked thro the door. The daughter didn't have the same reaction until she saw her mother. She exaggerated her behaviour but I don't think she did it on propose. There was an episode where the mom had to get a haircut and she started freaking out, jumping up and down and saying " it's so dirty" while crying. In an other episode, the daughter had the exact same reaction down to the words, body language and the voice when they went out shopping for shoes. I don't think the daughters OCD is as bad. A lot of these challanges are done as a group and the mom often reacts in front of the daughter. Almost immediately, she copies the behaviour even if 10 seconds ago, it didn't seem like she was bothered. Maybe it started as a way to help her mom feel normal, or to get closer to her only to later evolve into an illness. I think that if the girl was to be alone without her mother or the camera crew, she wouldn't do the extreme things that she does. She might still clean but not as much. She might still hesitate to eat out but if she was alone, no mom, no fellow OCD people , no friends around, she would do it in a more calm manner, without crying, without freaking out, even without wiping the table first.

      Agreed and it was a bit upsetting to me when the OCD-lady with the dark hair, admitted to; 'chucking away a handful whenever the read-haired-lady isn't looking."
      That can haunt her forever, not-knowing what might've been thrown away, or losing something and then thinking it was thrown out with the items.
      ALWAYS let the hoarder see EVERYTHING you are throwing out and ONLY clean if they are next to you and can see what you throw out. And ONLY throw stuff out if they physically can't do it, because it's better if you let them do it and decide over it.
      It's a controll-issue, so you will not solve it if you take it out of their hands and you throw it out. It just shows them you can't be trusted.

    I really really love this program and hope it can come back! I know many of these are from around 2014ish and I genuinely think this approach is one of the most positive I’ve ever seen. Having two people on EXTREME opposite sides of cleaning working together and learning from each other is absolutely fantastic and genuinely appears to have a positive result on both parties in most episodes, it’s ALL about making the effort. Life isn’t perfect and that’s okay, all that matters is having the willingness to try
    I deeply feel for Michelle, it’s clear that cleaning became a deeply traumatic task for her, I can absolutely understand her pain and struggle to cope with that, the feeling of resentment and abandonment because of her mom’s obsessive cleaning when she was a child breaks my heart. It still hurts her like it happened yesterday. I truly hope she was able to seek therapy, that deep trauma is so hard to overcome alone

    Michelle doesn't believe she's harming her children and says they have days out, but are they allowed to play outside and get dirty, to paint without worrying about 'oh my God what if they spilled'? Have they ever been to a car boot sale and known the joy of getting that book or toy they wanted for 50p, second hand? Would she allow them to eat a hot dog from a van there, or go on a bouncy castle that other children have been on with dirty socks? And people who clean obsessively often use lots of air fresheners -you know the ones that pump formaldehyde into the air your kids breathe. And are their immune systems even properly functional? Because once kids get beyond the delicate new baby stage their immune systems NEED exposure to germs to prime them. If chemical cleaners always do the job their immune systems don't have to learn to work so hard to keep them safe. "No germs" doesn't keep kids safe, it cripples them making them unsafe when their immune systems have to cope with germs in the real world.

      I'm a bit of a obsessive cleaner but that's it everything you have said my kids can do ... just because you like a clean and tidy home doesn't mean your kids aren't looked after or allowed to have fun 🤷‍♀️
      You can say the same for the dirty people there's no room for the kids to play, they can get food poisoning from dirty kitchens and end up very sick, there may be limited money because they buy so much crap that there isn't enough for days out with the kids, there clothes may be dirty leading to bullying because the kids personal hygiene isn't seen to properly
      Either side is to extreme there needs to be a middle ground - clean home to be safe but happy kids x

      @@alison2984 But do you have air fresheners pumping chemicals out into the air your kids breathe in the house? Are your kids breathing in the fumes from you using chemical cleaning products all the time?
      And yes, kids shouldn't be going OUT in dirty clothes, but they SHOULD sometimes be coming back in them. Are your kids happy to do something they want, even if it means getting themselves and their clothes filthy, or would they worry about that, know Mum 'wouldn't like it'. (I'm not talking about kids being inconsiderate, just that sometimes rolling down a grass bank DOES mean getting covered in grass clippings, paddling a stream does involve getting wet and muddy). If you aren't filling the air in your home with air freshener chemicals and your kids aren't afraid to do anything 'because Mum will go mad' then I think you have the balance right.

    I wish my mental illness made me have a clean house rather than a very messy house.

    This woman will be passing her OCD down to her children. Ppl with OCD need help as much as the hoarders do in my opinion.
