      They are very good. Nathen has a very balanced and common sense approach to his work which is sadly lacking in a lot of historians these days. (I may just be saying that because most of his work confirms what I already thought and you tend to appreciate the work of people who agree with you 😂 but seriously I really like his work and can't wait for the new book.)

      For equally balanced and well researched biographies of Richard III, read Matthew Lewis and Annette Carson.

    Heard Nathen comment on King John and was waiting for Philippa to say her line…….and she did! Still my favorite thing from Deceased Gits.

    I'm not a huge supporter of Henry Tudor, but I'm rather fond of his granddaddy Owen. Henry VII clearly wasn't the greatest guy, since his son turned out to be such a piece of work, but it doesn't seem like he was the worst guy, either. I don't think we'll ever figure out definitively what happened to the young princes Edward & Richard, but the more complicated theories seem extremely unlikely -- some of them seem more like wishful thinking. Richard III probably wasn't the caricature villain that Shakespeare paints him as, though that does make for fun drama, but that doesn't mean he would've been a nice guy, either. Most of the nobles & royals who were successful at the time were not good or nice people; they couldn't afford to be if they were to survive! Look at what happened to Henry VI for being pliant & neurospicy...
    I love that the chat is shipping Henry VII & RIchard III. Classic enemies-turned-lovers arc!
    The discussion of Y Mab Darogan made me suddenly understand why Henry VII named his eldest son Arthur! Never made the connection before. Thanks!

    It was morally acceptable for Elizabeth to let her brother get killed, as that was what was required for her children to get on in life. She was just being pragmatic.
    Also: it was morally reprehensible for Richard to allow the children of his brother to be killed . He should not have been pragmatic. In times where you have told us that siblings were not generally close or well known to one another.
    One thing we can always rely on from Tudors: double standards.

    I tried reading Philippa Langley's pro-Richard book and there was something about the tone that didn't sit right with me. I appreciated her trying to approach the issue as a detective would, so far so good, but I got the feeling I was getting a cherry picked version of events (as far as I got, about 1/3 in, she never really addressed the elephant in the room: they disappeared on Richard's watch, what did he do about it? He was in charge, assuming he was innocent, where was the investigation he should have ordered? What were its findings if he ever ordered one? If he didn't why not?) and that I was sold something, instead of an impartial investigation. It had a manic intensity I often see in conspiracy theories. And thing is: they might be right, but how they're saying it is unsettling.
    I get the sense that current day people in England are projecting their current day frustrations on this Richard vs Henry conflict, as a sort of English North vs South (I know there are political and economic complaints Northern English people have against the South) and Richard was from the North. Maybe some see him as "their King" in a way, like they can relate, thinking he was maligned just as they were across time. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the impression I'm getting as an outsider (I'm not British).

    Im a Tudor Historian here in California, USA and I equate the cultish vibe of Ricardians to Trump supporters here 😂 Not equating it in a specific political sense but I mean the feverish worship and wanting to see something and working it back from there… not all of them, that’s a blanket statement! But, you know what I mean! 😂🤷🏻‍♀️👑🗡️
    Also the “voice of dissent” has me 😂😂 Nathen rocks!

    • @Moose.-vy5ye
      @Moose.-vy5ye 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Hitchcock, If that's your analysis of Ricardians, then you're uninformed. Clueless, is more accurate.

    • @ChristopherNFP
      @ChristopherNFP 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He is the voice of orthodoxy, tradition and conformity. In maligning Richard Nathan is just continuing the mainstream story.
      Ricardians are the ones who are the voices of dissent.
