Try making a video like this. You don't have to show it to anyone. Memorizing is not a bad way. Doing it 10 times until you've basically memorized it is not bad either. This is how amateurs have to do it.

My next door neighbours who own two dogs, often invite me to their house but I never knew how to properly pet dogs because I grew up with cats. This video was very informative and at a nice slow pace. Thank you for such a good video!

Good stuff. I'd like to add that when petting, instead of petting in a manner that pulls on the dog, pet in a manner that pushes on the dog. Pulling on the dog, even inadvertently, can catch a dog off-guard. Dogs also tend to have an oppositional reflex to physical force. If you push, the dog won't feel threatened and will often push against your petting (an oppositional reflex), which happily brings the dog closer to you.
Having a dog approach you of it's own accord instead of forcing it in closer is much more comfortable for it.
She is absolutely correct I have a dog named Lucky he is a golden retriever and when people patted him he would bark or move away so I thought my friends and my family how to pat him correctly i watched this video to help and it surprisingly worked thankyou so much for this !

Thank you! I see so much dog patting and I feel sorry for the dogs. I've thought, that can't feel good. I thought that to a dog, it can't feel like affection, but like little hits. Glad you're telling people that dogs don't like pats, and glad that you're telling people what dogs actually do like. I've found that some dogs enjoy their chests scratched. My grandmother had a St Bernard who LOOOVED her chest scratched! Shed sit up with her front paws on me somehow (resting on my bent forearms, or resting on my tummy), and she'd let me go to town giving her long scratches up and down her chest. Boy oh boy, she loved it! I'd do it only if she indicated she wanted it. My mom would teach us, "Gently, gently" when it came to dog petting. She wouldn't pet dogs unless they came to her, and taught us to wait as well. Always listen to you mom, lol. :)

My brother's pit mix, who I'm playing and training everyday for 5-7 hours while he's at work, gets a firm, two handed slow massage where I move the skin on his sides up and down. He sits on my foot as I do this, and I will stop after a minute to ensure he wants it or is just tolerating it. As soon as I stop he will spin around and whimper, and then sit right back down on my foot and I'll repeat for a few minutes. He also tells me when he wants his hind legs massaged by coming up and turning away, with his rear facing me. He will turn his head as I do this and attempt to lick my face, so I'll lean in and let him get my neck, as I don't want his tongue on my face. If I stop after a minute, the same thing happens- whimper, spin towards me to get my attention, followed by a reposition to continue the hind leg massage. When he really is in doggie heaven, he will lean forward at a sharp angle. If I stop, whimper, spin, get my eye contact, reposition. If I just scratch him lightly, he will tolerate shortly, walk away, then return presenting the part of his body he wants massaged, not scratched. Yet I can't find any videos where dog trainers or vets talk about this technique and these two areas. Am I dog sitting a rare bird??

I've had dogs lean right by my side wagging their tale when I vigorously rubbed them back and forth. Some seem to respond to hugs positively, others don't seem to care for them.
All 4 of my dogs (2 dobermans, an Australian Shepherd mix, and an Italian Greyhound mix) would maneuver my hand so that I would pet and rub their head, so some dogs do like their head petted. They also liked me to scratch them behind their ears and rub their bellies.

A dog will let you pet its head, but only if they know and trust you. They're not enjoying the head petting, they're just tolerating it because you're the boss. Try the shoulders or back, and of course gently and slowly, calmly. They'll enjoy that a lot more. :) Kitties, now they enjoy head petting, 'specially big cheek rubs!
