    Fish era Marillion were quite simply magnificent...
    Sitting here in the dark, listening to this takes me back to all my teen angst and introspection. Looking back, it was the best of times...

    I never got to see them with fish, I saw them twice during the early Hogarth years. The concerts were both very good, but it still hurts that i didn't see the man.

    Thank you so much for this video! I grew up in the 80's, not knowing were to belong to, and with no future. No work to be found, and to be honest, no future. Marillion kept me from letting go, and Fish told me so much, using only a few words, but in fact telling whole chapters to me. I still have all my records I bought those day's and years ago, I cherish them dearly. I replaced them with cd's, so they will be kept as original as they are. Thank you a lot for sharing this concert with us!

    This brings back memories of going to see Marillion every time they played at the Marquee right up to the time they played Wembley - Marillion with Hogarth (a great singer) are a smoother, elegant band but Fish era Marillion were experimental, raw, visceral, occasionally dangerous (I was “Grendeled”!) and so much fun.

    One of the best bands ever. Marillion are 2 different bands with Fish and with Steve Hogarth. I like them both. Very introspective songs with Fish, and very down to earth with Hogarth. Quite agressive with Fish, more mellow with Hogarth. Still one of the best bands ever regardless the frontman

      +Dwight Schrute Hi there Dwight! Sorry but didn't understand your comment. I agree with though when you mention Fish to be more passionate. Doesn't mean Hogarth isn't. After all he has been the frontman for so many years... Still like I said, I love Marillion with F and with H.

    Thanks for uploading - I fondly remember the first broadcast of this, about 30 years ago! It was on BBC2 TV for the picture and BBC radio 2 FM for the stereo sound, which is why it was called SIGHT AND SOUND IN CONCERT. The 'new' idea of putting your best speakers each side of the TV suddenly made sense, and the Moog Taurus bass pedals still give me goosebumps. Great gig from an excellent band.

    A mate at School had the First two Albums. I disparagingly thought they were just ripping off early Genesis ~ 'till I saw them Play that is, in Glasgow, at the Barrowlands Ballroom late December '84. They were, I discovered to my utter surprise, a Punchy and Powerful Live outfit, playing to a respectfully Delirious Crowd.One should bear in mind that Genesis, and Yes, to name just two of the biggest culprits,were entering their dullest and and most populist phases at this time. I'm so glad I caught that Tour~ Fish was still wearing the Psychedelic Face paint and they were a Cult Attraction. They were about to take the Charts by Storm. Who knew?

    • @marcusstreets9887
      @marcusstreets9887 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some of what Mark and Steve did was influenced by Genesis. But Mark Kelly's bass lines are very different to anything Mike R would play. And the play between Mark's bass and Fish's staccato lyrics gives a very different feel. And of course, Fish drew on a very different inspiration for his lyrics.

    This is a blast to my youth, a misplaced childhood you could say, saw them in 1986, it was first gig, I was 13 years old. A few months before, I saw Ian Mosely in my first drum clinic with Mickey Barker and Dave Mattacks for Yamaha drums. My first ever album was Real To Reel... Yeah I was a Marillion nut back then. I follwed them with Hogarth up until Radiation, nothing I have heard since inspires, I respect what they do and I love Steve Hogarth's voice but they're a very different sounding band now and since mid 90's. Seasons End is fantastic, I didn't like Holidays in Eden, Brave is fantastic too as is Afraid of Sunlight. This strange engine has its moments but it was Radiation that made me lose interest. But I am happy they're still at it and doing great. A good friend of mine is Fish's drummer. And another good friend is Steve Rothery's bass player in his solo band. I haven't met either, some mates they are!

      For my money perhaps you want to see more comparison than there is. No doubt musical influence holds high. What possesed a public school educated Peter Gabriel to dress in giant testicles I don't think even he can answer. Fish's warpaint can easily, maybe a bit too easily be construed as a modern day warrior with words replacing swords and arrows. It's a starter for 10 in the philiosphy restraurant at the end of the universe!

    • @spacesnow
      @spacesnow 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Zero The Hero As a great fan of Marillion I never understood the comparing with Genesis thing. Now 30 years later I can put myself into same situation as those hardcore Genesis fans back then. Because I realised that whenever I listen any new/fresh prog band I automatically comparer it to Marillion. And the new generations have their own prog idols (like Dream Theater etc) which sounds "original and unique" for them. Talking more about Dream Theater - me personnally hearing only bits and pieces of Marillion, Genesis and Pink Floyd in their music and not really enjoying that. But that is my problem, as accusing Marillion copying Genesis was old-school proggers problem.

    Yes this will be and always be Marillion....but Marillion of the 80's a sound that will last for an eternity..truly mesmerising and a truly great singer.
    Then Steve joined, Marillion then became a different band for a different era. And the great thing is, they've progressed and moved on musically and creatively. You cannot compare Steve to Fish both different kinda entity's... But even Steve plays the Jester on stage. A truly awe inspiring singer and I prefer Marillion now...but then again I am from a different generation...
    My first Marillion album was Afraid of the Sunlight which I regard as their greatest album so far... So Yeppers the Fish years and Hogarth years I find equally a true level of excellence none better than the other....
    I would base this on the same emotions feelings and passion I got from my first ever playing of Misplaced Childhood and Brave both pure masterpieces 2 different singers but truly equally a piece of majestic jigsaw

    One of the worst break ups in rock history, I think. Even though Fish and the band went on in different directions, with the natural developments and musical evolution, something great was left behind and got really lost. A soul.

      The band didn't really die, it just... stopped being as interesting and cool as it used to be.

      I felt that way too until about 3 years ago when I saw a video of H doing script and crushing it. I started digging into the post Fish era and found 30 years of pretty great stuff. Not the same as Fish, nothing compares to that music but still better than most music out there

    I still get slagged off for being a fan of Marrilion they've never been in fashion. Love the fish albums, but my favourite is Hs debut- seasons end a masterpiece of pure prog.
