  • Why are itchy lice so tough to get rid of and how do they spread like wildfire? They have huge claws that hook on hair perfectly, as they crawl quickly from head to head.

DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Head lice can only move by crawling on hair. They glue their eggs to individual strands, nice and close to the scalp, where the heat helps them hatch. They feed on blood several times a day. And even though head lice can spread by laying their eggs in sports helmets and baseball caps, the main way they get around is by simply crawling from one head to another using scythe-shaped claws.
These claws, which are big relative to a louse’s body, work in unison with a small spiky thumb-like part called a spine. With the claw and spine at the end of each of its six legs, a louse grasps a hair strand to hold on, or quickly crawl from hair to hair like a speedy acrobat.
Their drive to stay on a human head is strong because once they’re off and lose access to their blood meals, they starve and die within 15 to 24 hours.
--- How do you kill lice?
Researchers found in 2016 that lice in the U.S. have become resistant to over-the-counter insecticide shampoos, which contain natural insecticides called pyrethrins, and their synthetic version, known as pyrethroids.
Other products do still work against lice, though. Prescription treatments that contain the insecticides ivermectin and spinosad are effective, said entomologist John Clark, of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. They’re prescribed to kill both lice and their eggs. Clark said treatments such as suffocants, which block the lice’s breathing holes, and hot-air devices that dry them up, also work. He added that tea tree oil works both as a repellent and a “pretty good” insecticide. Combing lice and eggs out with a special metal comb is also a recommended treatment.
--- How long do lice survive?
It takes six to nine days for their eggs to hatch and about as long for the young lice to grow up and start laying their own eggs. Adult lice can live on a person’s head for up to 30 days, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
--- Can your pet give you lice?
No. Human head lice only live on our heads. They can’t really move to other parts of our body or onto pets.

There is a common misconception that getting lice means you're dirty, have bad hygiene.. in reality it just means you ended up in real close proximity to someone who gave you the lice. And has been that way for as long as lice have been found on people. 1 long chain of social interactions spreading lice between people.

When I first got lice, my mom didn't realize until during my bath. While soaking in the tub is when a single louse lost its grip and floated in the bath water. My mom initially thought it was a funky-looking spider that fell in and killed it. Then she noticed another louse floating around and then realized my hair was infested after taking a closer look at the body. Even though combing them out was the only solution of getting rid of them, I sometimes wonder if leaving my hair soaking in bathwater would have caused all the lice to lose their grip and float everywhere.🤔

One of the things they didn't mention is that lice don't do well on a dirty scalp. Yes, you heard that right. If you keep your hair clean, they tend to survive longer. Your best bet is to wash your hair with vinegar (white vinegar is best, as the stronger acids eat away at the glue holding the nits on to the hair) and comb those bad boys out into a bowl of alcohol. They do NOT like being dislodged and will wiggle to get away, so make sure you use a toothpick to clean the tines between combings. And make sure you put the comb into alcohol afterward! Nits will hatch on a comb and seek blood to survive.

It's the training worth of years still coming in use. Head lice aren't rly a sign of bad hygiene or simply being referred to as dirty. You get them from people who already have them or having your hair enclosed in a cloth(hijab like myself) which can create a good environment for it to breed on. Just make sure to comb using a lice comb daily esp in summers and u r good to go!

I’ve had lice since elementary I’m now in high school, I’ve been working so hard to get rid of it. There are times I get rid of it but all my cousins which are like 9 of them, and they live near me, they all have lice even their moms so whenever I don’t have any they somehow they manage to give me some even if I have a braid or coconut oil in my hair. Been using the lice brush for years, I have super horirble hair because of it. Huge split ends, and cannot go to a hair dresser not even to get my purple highlights I’ve always wanted, it’s torture! And a lot of times I am just scratching my head in school and one gets stuck in my nail and have to get it out without no one seeing me, most of the times it falls on the desk or paper so I have to brush it off secretly. 😭

I used to have a lot of lice before, including the many eggs that were on my hair. My family would sometimes say "those lice are building a boot camp on your head". But after getting a haircut, they're gone. I'm trying to be careful not to let the same thing happen again.

I had them as a kid when our neighbors that had them stayed over and me and my sis got them in 2001 and i was 10. My sisters went away easily. Mine however.. Took my dad several months of combing and kits and back then an electric comb that shocked the lice and my scalp. To the point my grandma cut my hair boy short, and using all sorts of weird home remedies. Dad combed my hair with lice combs everyday until one day they were gone. No lice or nits or eggs left. They did not leave easily. Thankfully i havent had them since then. I am 30 now. Thankful for my kids they have shampoo now that helps repel them. And dont let them wear other kids hats or clothing. Or try them on in stores

I got lice once when I was a teen and it was no big deal. Just washed all of my bedding and steam cleaned the upholstery, and for my hair just tea tree oil worked fine. Only needed one or two washes and it was all done. Of course this is all easier when you have somebody to help you and have a steam cleaner. But you don't NEED to use the steam cleaner. It just helps. I've known lots of people who had plenty of luck just using elbow grease to scrub cushions where you would lay your head. That was about the worst part of it for me. Luckily.

I remember I got lice in 8th grade but I didn't know it at the time, then I went to the beach and my head itchiness really calmed down, and finally I had caught a live bug in my nails and showed it to my mom, who easily removed the rest of the lice with a kit. The salt water killed lots of the eggs and drowned the young, so I recommend going to the beach before shaving your head

Lice combs are effective if you're thorough enough. And yeah, picking off eggs is alpha omega. You just need patience, hood lighting and good vision.
