    Great video, thanks for taking the time to make it. I'm doing mine next week. Looks a lot easier than a VW Touran, and no "special locking" tool required. Good job my son!

    I got quoted €500 to replace the timing belt, some Radial seals and the valvecover gasket at my regular mechanics shop. Decided "fuck that" and im gonna replace em at home myself for less than €200. Saving this video for that date, Tänud mees!

    Between stuck bolts, stuck nuts and the belt being a pain to get back on. It was a successful change. It took a long time because the nut just would nut move. Required penetrating fluid in the end to lubricate it up. Appreciate the video, helped me a lot. Now I'd like some new finger tips after getting the belt back on.

      I think it's 120 000km or 140 000km in Europe (or 10 years), depending of the country. I usually like to do it around 100 000km.

      If it is a manual transmission then yes, for automatic it doesn't matter.

    Good video, how did you torque the crank nut up, did you use the locking tool? And when you finish tensioning the timing belt has the pionter on the tensioner got to be bang on in the middle, thanks

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Normally I do use the tool that goes under the 4 bolts to hold it but I didn't have it here so I used just rattlegun (have to be decent one). It's supposed to be in the middle when the engine is 20 deg C, 1mm one way or the other won't matter but I like to get it in the middle (might take couple goes).

    the D5 refers to the engine? I have to do the same job in an XC70 D5 2013... it is exactly the same as yours?? i've never done a timing belt on a volvo before but as I can see in the video, it's extremely easy, you didn't even need to take the engine mount off... i'm guessing the hardest part would bee to take off and tighten the crank pulley if you don't have an impact wrench

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      XC70 is generally the same but you have engine mount there which you have to remove so you need to support the engine from the bottom. Also your accessory belts have different tentioner. If you don't have impact wrench you need a locking tool for the crank pulley.

    Hello, I have a 2004 XC90 T5, would I need a locking tool? Great video by the way!

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! You will need the tool if you are going to remove any of the cam gears. If not then you just make sure you align crank and cam markings, rotate the crank by hand for two revolutions and check the markings again.

    • @HeapsofProjects

      Yes you can change just the water pump but you still have to pull everything else off first.

    How many km did you have on the old belt? Did you notice any codes or manufacturer markings on the belt? I have the same engine but don't know when the timing belt was changed but I can still read INA on the belt.

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure about km but often the belt will start developing small cracks while the text is still there. Sometimes you can see cracking with only 80-100 000km.

    Maybe this looks easy but it's not. Authorized service takes almost 7.5 hours to change the timing belt with all other stuff.

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For P2 D5 anything over 2-2.5 hours just for timing belt and water pump would raise questions for me. It takes me about 1.5h when I take it really really slow.

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HeapsofProjects I am also wondering why they (Volvo service) need almost 8 hours to replace the timing belt. But, I see that they changed:
      - Coolant
      - Micro belt (set)
      - A-C Belt
      - Timing belt (set)
      - Water pump (set)
      Total price: ~600$

    • @HeapsofProjects
      @HeapsofProjects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @ That is included in the timing belt and water pump replacement anyway.
