Hey man, did you have any problem with the Serpent's Pass episode? I saw it uploaded and added it to watch later, but it's supposedly blocked in my country (I'm from Argentina)
or maybe the reason the moon is positioned to be full all the time is because she is watching over sokka and the gaang. the moon doesn't stop having a shadow just because it "feels" different. it has to be in the right place to look full.
When he pointed out that Aang is out of it emotionally, Toph is out of it physically, and Sokka is out of it mentally, I realized that those are the strengths that each of them contribute to the team. e.i. Toph is the physical powerhouse, Sokka is the plan guy, and Aang is one who's always relentlessly positive.
7:25 Appa is more than Aang's pet. He's Aang's spirit guide like Roku's Dragon. He's his best and oldest friend. Losing Appa was like losing an arm to Aang.
As overdone as the "cartoon character is high" joke may be, I still find Sokka's noodle arms and his tone when he says "maybe it's friendly!" super funny.
They went full "anime" with his expressions in that one scene and it worked perfectly. High sokka is the perfect levity to match the seriousness of what aang is dealing with
I always liked how the oldest of the sand-benders is the one who realises and respects the avatar first here. Like he instantly realises that his son fucked up and you can hear the dread in his voice. I know in the storm it shows how the older generations are angry that they had to live their entire lives in a war thanks to Aang running away, but I like that, here, the oldest are the ones who remember what the avatar can do and are reasonably scared when he's angry
One more thing about the “back room”, the White Lotus doorman says that “that room is for flowers only”. Flowers aye? Lotus Flowers? Only true Lotus’s are allowed in after all.
A really nice touch they put in when Aang loses it on the Buzzard-wasp is that after he "kills" it and walks away, Momo has his ears down and kinda slinks behind him. You can tell that he realises there's something off about Aang and that he's either scared/worried/confused for him. Small touch but really gives Momo some character; like Appa, he's a companion, not a pet or some animal
I always noticed this She even lets Momo have more after takeing a mouthfull himself I cant get behind people saying Katara is just Annoying Sakka is more annoying hen her in the grand scheme, but yeah the naggy mother figure can get old listining to i get it But a real mother puts family first, and thats never underrated A lot of real life moms cant do that, family first Shit Toph does it in Kora for her theif of a child And i havent seen Lok
@@donovanulrich348 shes annoying bc she does a lot of shitty things but never really gets called out for it like everyone else does. not just because she nags.
@@fireflymiesumae having a genuine or non genuine reason to hate a character doesn’t mean you have issues lol. And besides, I agree, Katara isn’t a perfect character really
Katara is really channeling the water qualities that Iroh was talking about. “They have a deep sense of community and love that holds them together through anything”
I appreciate the "Sokka is high" gag for how it manages to pull double duty. It provides an otherwise very bleak episode with comic relief while also serving the plot very well: it takes Sokka out of commission for most of the episode, and since Aang is lashing out at everyone and Toph is depressed and listless, this leaves Katara as the only Gaang member with her head still on straight, increasing the pressure on her and the hopelessness of their situation. If she cracks under the pressure of keeping everyone alive and navigating through the desert before they die of dehydration, they're screwed. She's the only one who can possibly do it. And if Aang dies out here, they won't be able to stop the Fire Nation before the comet comes. Sokka being high as balls is fun, but if you think about it, it's also putting the entire world at risk. Also, Toph asking if she can get high too when she's feeling hopeless and probably convinced she's going to die manages the same trick of being funny on the surface but depressing if you think about it. I don't think I'd want to face my inevitable death sober either.
I always wondered what would happen if Toph drank some cactus juice. What would she “see”? Kind of a missed opportunity, albeit not really important, but still
@@Delta_Aves There have been a few case studies of blind people who have taken LSD - one guy, under the alias "Mr Blue Pentagon", reported having very weird sensory experiences. He didn't "see" anything, but he had auditory and tactile hallucinations instead and reported symptoms similar to synesthesia.
@@Delta_Avesthe cactus juice is an obvious analogy to hallucinogens, and those things dont just mess up your vision, it messes up all your senses, she doesnt need to hallucinate visions to be high, she can hallucinate sensations, sounds or just her humour, she could be laughing manically, start saying nonsense, claims shes hearing things that dont exist or even say shes feeling pain or in a situation thats not happening, like if she said shes actually on fire like High-As-Balls Sokka Hallucinated she was. in a way she would be in a worse condition than sokka since her body already compensates the lack of vision by amplyfying her other senses, if those are highjackes by a drug, she would probably be overwhelmed.
I like how Momo understands the gravity of Aangs actions of killing the buzzardwasp. At 10:09 you can tell mom is scared by the way he follows after Aang with his ears laid back and walking as low to the ground as possible.

I feel that losing Appa is a really big moment for this show. It makes you realize that you may have taken for granted how useful he is for fast travel, as well as combat. The show changes drastically while he is gone, with interesting character development for Aang. It's my favorite arc in the show, and helps cement Appa as my favorite nonverbal animal character in any show.
There are a lot of parallels to star wars in this show and oppa going missing and aang being angry and on the warpath reminds me of Anakin massacreing the tuskins after his mom died.
Appa is the only animal in the show that I consider a character. He has a personality, goes through character development, and is a crucial part of Aang
@@obinnaodoemenam8762 Momo is a pet. He provides nothing to the show besides occasional laughs. Appa is a character who changes throughout the show and has a huge cultural impact in Aang.
Aangs rage was legit scary for me as a kid. Not like "keep you up" scary but made my blood run cold. We never really consider him being violent, so seeing him like that was so jarring
@@Tryforce8000Especially if you consider how all the other Avatars had their own pet companions, and collectively feel that anger over losing one. Those mfers didn't just piss off Aang, they pissed off every single Avatar before him. Chills.
I think this is the strongest Katara episode in the whole show. She keeps the team together, serves as the brain after Sokka goes useles, and shows incredible love to Aang at his lowest moment. I still get emotional when I see the final scene
my thoughts exactly. katara is honestly such an underappreciated character because people only like to think of her flaws, but she's soooo strong and urges everyone forward even though she's suffering just the same. if it weren't for her, they'd be dead in the middle of the desert.
@@kerokrystal I know! Katara is honestly my favorite character in this show (along with Iroh because we all love him) and I love getting to see Katara get the spotlight in certain episodes such as this one and the prison episode. I really adore her determination and her hopefulness. Yes she has flaws, but she has a lot of strengths as well. That's what makes a great character. So it doesn't seem fair to me to only focus on her flaws.
I usually don’t get super emotional during that scene, but on my latest watch through I did. Been dealing with some anger, so it was soothing seeing Aang go through something similar and get comforted.

I feel there's an underappreciated part of this episode. When Aang enters the avatar state Sokka snaps into action and drags everyone to safety. Big maturity/growth moment for his character
My favourite part about that, “Maybe we can find some sand benders” line is that Aang isn’t interested in Appa. He’s mostly looking for revenge in that moment, it’s subtle and I may been reading in too deep but I love it.
He probably thought he’d find Appa with the sandbenders, and was prepared to fight them all to get to him. But when they tell him they traded the bison and he’s in Ba Sing Se, Aang flew into a blind range, and then pure sadness and depression upon realizing that he’s just gonna have to go for a while without his bison, as there’s nothing he can do right now that’ll make a difference. It’s ironic given that aang was in the avatar state, his most powerful, yet still felt so powerless.
@@Delta_Aves The way he says it though... His definitely prime focus is on finding Appa. But to get there, he must find sandbenders first. And he'll make them pay while at it.
@@Urlik7 To me his tone clearly sounds like "revenge first, Appa second" I find it fascinating that two people can hear the same thing and come to completely different conclusions
@@jacobmeads9678 I too think it's revenge that's the driver there. To me it seems like Aang initially flew away into the desert angry and upset but still trying to find Appa, but that outburst that created the sand cloud was the moment he has lost all hope and instead switched to getting revenge.
@@jacobmeads9678 This is also one of the main reasons he did not want to katara to take revenge in the southern raiders episode. i've actually noticed Toph tends to stand with one side of her body facing someone she talks with or moving her head that way. to me this makes perfect sense. being blind she hasn't been taught or given a reason to face conversation but because she is listening she will direct one of her ears toward the person talking, which is a perfectly natural reaction to a sound.
@@neolexiousneolexian6079 Toph however knows exactly where they are while they're touching the ground! Maybe her hearing is better due to being blind, and listening trough only one ear is just as good too!
thats interesting because im not blind in any way but i do this as a natural thing. I think its between having bad ears, especially in loud places, and hating eye contact. i turn perpendicular to the source of sound.
I've always loved Toph's reaction to Aang going into the Avatar state. She's always known she's been training the Avatar, but she's never had much respect for him due to nicknames like Twinkle Toes. This is the moment she realizes how much raw untamed power Twinkle Toes actually holds
"hmmm, old friends that don't want to attack me", I think that is exactly why they went to see the guy at the Oasis, if everyone was close just 2 episodes ago then it is not that crazy to believe that he was the closest member nearby, after all it is still a secret society and Iroh can't be that active in it because he is trying to help Zuko
Well... Yeah, that's what you understand when the scene of "old friends that don't want to attack me" fade in black, it's pretty obvious that they're now looking for that friends that don't want to attack them
@Zion Lamar Iroh is not the leader, just a "Grand Lotus", the same as Pakku, Bumi and the others, also it is a secret society all over the world and Iroh has been with Zuko most of the time, there is no reason to expect a low level member to know him, at most he should know about him
If you look really really closely at the buzzard wasp Aang knocks out of the sky, it falls in 2 pieces. Like it legit looks like Aang decapitated it. Also the Yuyan sound bit makes me laugh way too fucking hard.
The fact that each member of the Gaang has lost a part of them is something I never realized, and their unique coping mechanisms are also really interesting to see through that perspective. Thanks for pointing that out!
That's something about Aang I didn't realize for a long time. When Roku said the Avatar state is a defense mechanism, he tells the audience how it was able to save Aang's life in previous episodes. But from that point on, the audience sees that the Avatar state is actually Aang's coping mechanism. It's a dramatic shift for his character that works really well.
Its honestly kind of unnerving seeing Aang go out of his way to hurt people. That buzzardwasp was retreating and he killed that damn thing. And that second sandbender boat, his probable line of thinking was just to leave them stranded there. Let them die the way he and his group were. In his state, he might actually not have been able to protect the gaang from himself the way he did the last couple times he freaked out. He very well could have killed his friends too if katara didnt snap him out of it
@@Dinkleberg2845 Misconception. It only looks like he cut the head off because of the draw distance. You can tell easily by the way the wasp falls that he did not cut it into two whatsoever
Another thing with aang hitting the wasp out of the sky, as they walk off screen momo is almost cowarding like a dog would if you're in a physically bad mood, with his limbs tucked in, chest low to the ground, ears back and his tail just dragging in the sand. Even momo knows that this is incredibly out of character and hes scared cuz hes never seen aang mad before
I think the yuyan struggle to kill our main characters so much because none of them are flies and their commander did never claim they could kill anything, Infact he claimed they could hit their target without killing it
oh my GOD. I've watched this series more times then I cant count- I've NEVER placed Tophs agape expression with hearing and feeling Aang in his avatar state for the first time. You just absolutely blew my mind; Not only for the significance of that moment, but the fact that in 15 years I never made the connection. So glad to have found this channel.
A cool thing is when iroh was explaining the four nations to zuko he explained the waterbenders were capable to adapting to many things, and have a deep sense of community and love that holds them together through anything, hence why katara brought them out of the desert
I love how Katara says “everybody hold hands” and she is the only one not holding someone else’s hand instead leading the group by holding onto Aang’s staff
Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but Iroh's line about "friends who don't want to kill me" is more than just the joke. He is probably reminded about the White Lotus with that line and as such he seeks them out later on
I think you're kinda subverting expectations here. At least I'm really fed up with youtubers trying to "overanalyze" stuff and just being cynic and mean. You come from real appreciation and love for the content you review and it shows. If I had to pinpoint an explanation for your success, that would be it. That and you being funny as hell of course.
And he got a bit of a push when raz gave him a shout out. Thats how I found the channel at least. But yeah definitely the stuff you mentioned made me stick around
I really like how protective Aang is over his culture. The way I see it, his whole arc is coming to terms with being the last airbender. He takes great care to preserve his culture's ideas of peace, vegetarianism, and pacifism. It really fits that for the end of the show, the conflict is what he has to do as an Air Nomad, and what he has to do as the Avatar, and the resolution is for him to find a way to keep balance between those two parts of him. So when Appa is lost, it's like a part of him and his entire people was taken away from him. It's like losing a pet, a brother, and your entire culture all at the same time. I think this is also why he had such a rough time learning Earth bending. He's ingrained these Air Nomad ideas so much that it's hard to think in any other way, and he's got to work really hard to learn a different mindset.
Yeah, and in the first episode of season 3, Sokka asks Aang to wear a headband to cover his arrow and Aang also gets defensive there because he thinks he should be able to wear it proudly
The split second animation of Sokka's arms being all wavy and his eyes being all "anime" like while high on cactus juice cracked my up as a child and I can't help giggling every time I see it now
2:31 "Hmm... old friends that don't want to attack me..." I always loved this moment. I like to think this is the moment he thought of going to the White Lotus, kicking off their entire journey around Ba Sing Se
For me this ep is a strong contender for best-looking episode of the entire show. I love the scenes in the desert when the light gets low especially and the environments in general there are really cool looking.
I think the end of this episode is one of the most powerful moments in the entire series. It makes my eyes well up a bit every time I watch it. I think it's one of those moments that makes you realize how much you've attached yourself to these characters, to the point where they don't even have to say anything, their expressions tell an entire story. Anyway, congrats on making it half way! Here's to the next half!
I remember being so mad at Aang for being so mean to the gAang after Appa was taken. But after he killed that wasp and showed no remorse, he stared right into the camera as if he was looking at me. Me for criticizing his behavior towards everyone around him over losing his bison, me for not being understanding of his pain and anger. He basically looked right at me and gave a look that said “Say one more thing about my attitude. I dare you!” And I immediately shut up. Also, Katara has the patience of a saint with Aang’s outbursts. If he had spoken to me like that, I would want nothing to do with him. But then again, I’d probably be killed by him while he’s in the Avatar State.
I really felt the Star Wars influence here, Aang mirrors Anakin so much in this episode, sand-people killing/kidnaping a loved one followed by a snap? The similarities speak for itself, the difference is in where Anakin had nobody who he could confidence in, Aang has the whole gaang and specially Katara to help calm him
You nail so much of what makes this episode soar. But wow, I love how they animate Aang's emotion throughout. His dour face, when combined with the music, as he's flying after the wasp - which then doesn't change at all once Momo is retrieved. He just takes the next step and kills the wasp. And it's a dark moment. Even Momo is scared. The other big one is the use of the mushroom cloud expressing here Aang's increasingly unstable rage. They don't know what it is, but we do. Similar moment, with similar alarming music, occurs in The Avatar State, when Aang blasts the whole ground troops while in the state: They animate it just like old videos of test atomic blasts to communicate to the viewer fearfully explosive power. Beautifully done.
To add to that I'll point out that Aang's avatar state in this episode is actually the first time we see Aang in control of it. It's also the first time we hear him speak in it too which gives us the takeaway that Aang is so far past livid that he and the other Avatars in the Avatar state were going to deal with the Sandbenders personally if Katara didn't stop him with a hug. We have seen Aang angry and upset before and pushed into the Avatar state because of it but never to that level. This episode really illustrates how terrifying Aang could be if he was pushed to the brink.
This has always and forever been the one and only episode when I can describe Aang as angsty or downright murderous. His love for his pet and his connection to Appa as one of the few ties to his past are very strong and seeing this side of him always made me feel sad but understood as a kid. I loved how Katara was able to take the lead and the characterization of these characters is really good in the episode, it feels like getting to know them all over again.
Hey guys, thanks for all the help with the likes and comments the last few videos! I'm really seeing a difference with how my channel is doing. Keep the train rolling and give me another like and comment? 👀👀👀
12:00 You ever think about just how on-the-nose it is that Katara was Aang's "earthly attachment" he needed to let go of in the finale? Like she is quite literally grounding him and bringing him back to himself, out of the Avatar State, in that moment.
This episode really does a lot to open this sad and melancholic part of the show. Having it so soon after bitter work and Zuko's rock bottom really works well as he pulls out and Aang falls into one of his worst moments. The way this show handles loss is so incredible and really stands out in this season both with Aang and Appa and with Iroh and his son.
not sure where to put this comment so i figure the half way point of my 3rd rewatch of this series fits. but i remember watching these as they were released weekly 2 years ago, i'd put them on while cooking (for my then gf) or when i had some time to myself. such an amazing series and im so glad your channel has grown so much, your narration & insight is unique and I find myself watching this series when i dont have the energy to binge-watch atla. i dont expect this will get seen, but keep up the amazing work and i cant wait for the rest of LOK S2
I'm so glad someone finally addressed the katara scenes of this episode. I really think this episode showed that her motherly behavior is actually something the gaang needs and sometimes, like in the desert, actually depends on. She took charge when no one else could even though she was trapped in a desert like everyone else and put the others before herself when she split the water between them, not actually drinking any herself.
I really liked how OA mumbled his way through thankfulness for people watching overanalysing avatar; it really helped to develop his character as a down to earth, humble guy who's just happy to be doing something he enjoys.
11:23 - This may break continuity, but it's just an idea. What if the reason why Aang's arm tattoos didn't light up while his head did is because it was like his head/emotional reaction to hearing about appa so that's the part of him that was instantly triggering the avatar state?
@@Neon-lt5jl you kidding me! My dad introduced me to The Holly Grail when I was like 10, and took me to Spamalot on Broadway when I was 16! I love that movie! Stupid humor is the best! I have different expectations then past generations, so the original wasn't as entertaining to me. They even managed to involve Ego Spengler in it, even thoufh Harold Ramis died in 2014. Something that annoys me (now that you pointed it out last episode), since it was Sokka's idea to stay behind and get the eclipse date and delay them from escaping the library, why didn't Aang blame Sokka for Appa's kidnap? I mean, to be fair, if they left the library immediately, they probably would've gotten there in time to stop the sand benders. So why did he only get mad at Toph? Not cool, dude.
He deeply knows that it isn’t tophs fault but when he gets out there sees appa gone and only the person that was somewhat supposed to look out for him left he just gets angry at her for some time
Sokka insisting on staying in the library provided them with extremely important intel on the enemy that they couldn't afford to not have - Thus why Aang isn't upset with him
@@Neon-lt5jl This isn't bad logic, but I honestly feel like it's more likely that Aang is just so upset emotionally that he isn't thinking through any of this at all. Appa has been the single biggest constant in his life and losing him is like losing control of everything for Aang.

8:26 "What is your favorite color?" "Blue." I always pegged Iroh more as black tea Amber as his favorite color. But hey tea can't be his entire personality. I think such a simple color really adds to him. He has a complex backstory and character, but a very simple personality. And His main motivation is to be a proper, positive father figure for Zuko. I'm gonna go make some tea.
Small thing, but you mentioned how you didn’t want to explain the impact of the last scene of the episode or risk ruining the moment. Well, your show is “Over” analyzing Avatar! I want to hear your thoughts on everything! Great episode either way!
I am indeed someone who enjoys Sokka being high. Not only is it funny, but like others pointed out, Sokka’s greatest strength is missing. I mostly love it for being funny and appreciating that children’s shows/movies love to make character trip.
Hey, man, we wouldn't be here if you didn't deserve all this love. This is a breath of fresh air for the series, and clearly you've been learning some intermediate airbending skills. I'm honestly curious what your gonna do once we run out of Avatar, and I'm definitely sticking around for it.
10:02 as the vulture-wasp falls it looks like it was cut in half, so in my head Canon Aang straight up killed that thing because he was so desperately angry and I honestly think he would've killed the sand benders if Katara didn't stop him. Also momo hunches down in fear because he never seen Aang lose it like that.
I love how the whole episode you are incredibly well spoken, then you proceed to bumble at the end. I appreciate that because it shows just how much thought you put into these videos
There's actually a pretty good reason for Katara to switch out her water. A couple I could think of off top. Stagnation, which should have have happened by now if she hasn't changed it since then we can assume she just doesn't change it, which would make the water in this episode undrinkable. Contamination from other sources of water like salt water and that swamp water from the swamp episode. And contaminants from earth which would possibly let earthbenders of particular skill disrupt her bending the water effectively. Granted these last two are virtually non-factors as THEORETICALLY Katara would be able to filter-bend the water free of contaminants and the only earthbenders that come to mind skilled enough to disrupt her control of her water and use it against her are on her side, being Toph, Bumi, and potentially Aang later.

Love this
that actualy makes sense but im pretty sure moon continuity was broken before
maybe the moon never worked right because if someone disturbed twin and la while they are like swimming in circles the moon gets out of sync
or maybe the reason the moon is positioned to be full all the time is because she is watching over sokka and the gaang. the moon doesn't stop having a shadow just because it "feels" different. it has to be in the right place to look full.
Actually if Yue really wanted to help out the Water Tribe, keeping the moon full all the time is the best possible way to do that.

There are a lot of parallels to star wars in this show and oppa going missing and aang being angry and on the warpath reminds me of Anakin massacreing the tuskins after his mom died.

my thoughts exactly. katara is honestly such an underappreciated character because people only like to think of her flaws, but she's soooo strong and urges everyone forward even though she's suffering just the same. if it weren't for her, they'd be dead in the middle of the desert.
@@kerokrystal I know!
@@Urlik7 To me his tone clearly sounds like "revenge first, Appa second"

@@jacobmeads9678 I too think it's revenge that's the driver there. To me it seems like Aang initially flew away into the desert angry and upset but still trying to find Appa, but that outburst that created the sand cloud was the moment he has lost all hope and instead switched to getting revenge.
@@jacobmeads9678 This is also one of the main reasons he did not want to katara to take revenge in the southern raiders episode. A lot of people constantly hate amd shit on aang and say he forced his values on her etc. But aang is the only one who knows what it is to take revenge because he killed the buzzard wisp
Aangs reaction to losing Appa is incredibly realistic. He has literally lost a part of himself, and this episode conveys that in the perfect way.
i've actually noticed Toph tends to stand with one side of her body facing someone she talks with or moving her head that way. to me this makes perfect sense. being blind she hasn't been taught or given a reason to face conversation but because she is listening she will direct one of her ears toward the person talking, which is a perfectly natural reaction to a sound.
Would also make sense for her to point her mouth at them so they can hear her though. Which she does do sometimes.
Blind people generally still face someone while talking to them but stare at a person's mouth, since obviously that's where the sound is coming from
Hm. You want both ears to be able to get a fix on position, though.
This. A lot of people think that that line is just a gag, but it's really what reminds Iroh about the White Lotus
I always come to the comments section for this gems. This really makes sense and it's genius

@Zion Lamar Iroh is not the leader, just a "Grand Lotus", the same as Pakku, Bumi and the others, also it is a secret society all over the world and Iroh has been with Zuko most of the time, there is no reason to expect a low level member to know him, at most he should know about him

This is why I hate the Northern Air Temple episode.
The split second animation of Sokka's arms being all wavy and his eyes being all "anime" like while high on cactus juice cracked my up as a child and I can't help giggling every time I see it now
I liked his noodly limbs and the OwO face

I always thought I was crazy for never hearing him say “put a muzzle on him” just to realize it was never said in the actual episode lol
I just noticed that the thumbnail of this episode has High Sokka instead of the normal Avatar Day Sokka. Nice touch.

I dare you!”
And I immediately shut up.
9:30 That just fits so well it's canon to me now.

Hey, man, we wouldn't be here if you didn't deserve all this love. This is a breath of fresh air for the series, and clearly you've been learning some intermediate airbending skills.
I'm honestly curious what your gonna do once we run out of Avatar, and I'm definitely sticking around for it.
That mushroom cloud is a good metaphor for Aang being akin to an atomic bomb.
Already halfway there? Keep up the great work! This is my favorite series on TH-cam, and I can't wait to see the rest!
I appreciate that because it shows just how much thought you put into these videos
when iroh thought to himself about old friends who dont want to kill and he thought of the white lotus members and went later was a cool detail
"The Yuyan can fly to a tree from 100 files away without yard flies killing the Yuyan"
The Gaang broke the #1 rule of desert travel:
Travel during the night and rest during the day
GIVE SONG'S HORSE THING BACK
Maybe Iroh had one of the Lotus members return it? I mean, we never see anything to confirm this, but tell me he wouldn't do something like that.
10:05 I like how Momo kind of sheepishly crawls after Aang here. Like he knows this is serious.
Damn, can't believe we're already half way there
“That room is for flowers only!” White lotus only
There's actually a pretty good reason for Katara to switch out her water.
"Maybe we can find some sandbenders" spine chilling.
