Ep. 37 is one of the most important episodes of the series, for me at least. It convinced me, without a doubt, that One Piece is not just a shounen but an anime of the highest caliber; it doesn't just entertain its viewers, it inspires them.

Love how Luffy said that without even knowing Nami's backstory (technically it happens all the time, Luffy just doesn't care about your past because he can sense if you're a good person) He doesn't care who Arlong is but he made Nami cry so that's enough reason to beat Arlong up.
Difference between live action and anime: in live action Luffy listens to Nami's backstory. In anime he just goes to sleep and takes a stroll around town. It hits home more when Nami says you dont even know what happened in this village 8 years ago. And Luffy doesn't care about any of that to help Nami. In live action, villagers dont know Nami's plan and hate her for joining Arlong. In anime they know all along but act as if they dont know so that Nami wouldn't feel pressured with their hopes and expectations. They know Arlong is keeping them hostage to make Nami a prisoner and Nami would spend her whole life under Arlong to save the village. So they go to fight Arlong knowing that they will die. In order to set Nami free
Its the only thing more logical in the live action is people not knowing... because all those adults knowing and letting a child ruin his life like that without any reaction would be dumb.

Villagers would have ended up dying to protect Nami. And her trauma would be reinforced. Villager's try to save Nami. They get killed immediately. Nami has no incentive to join Arlong. Arlong kills Nami because he cant use her and she doesn't have money.

I love the live action, but the anime gives so much more depth to not just Nami, but the villagers and Bellemere, am so glad you guys can experience this.
"Which one of you is Arlong?" has always been such an amazing line to me because it's not just showcasing Luffy being the cool/threatening type, it's showing that he literally knows nothing about what's happened. The backstory that made millions cry is a backstory he's been entirely ignorant of, and that single question shows that the most important information he's aware of is the fact that someone named Arlong made his friend cry.
I can't imagine for an 18 year old girl to experience such pain, heartbreak, trauma, sadness and hopelessness. For her whole life until she met Luffy, she was just fighting for her survival and the survival of her village.
I'm happy that you're getting enveloped into the story. A lot of people group anime as cartoons, but with certain anime, especially like One Piece, as you can see. There's so much depth within its storytelling from corruption, murder, manipulation, bad people, good people, and people with complex circumstances. The list goes on and on as the story continues.
Luffy giving his hat is very symbolic. Its his greatest treasure and him giving to Nami and she remembering the importance of his hat, proved that she is as important, if not more to him, for wearing that hat.😢💗 Btw Bellmere was shot in the head in the Manga but Toei changed it on the chest for the Anime.

I'm glad you guys watched the live action, but I'm REALLY glad you went back and watched the anime for this flashback. As good as the live action was, this flashback wasn't done the justice this anime delivered because every piece of this backstory was masterful.
Hachi wasn't in the Live Action. He was planned - they have the full concept of how he would've looked mapped out, & he wasn't the fishman gambling against Nami. That guy has an equivalent of himself in the anime/manga
The walk to Arlong Park, colloquially referred to as 'The Walk' by the fandom, is something that the anime added that wasn't really impactful in the original manga, but it turned out to be such a strong and epic addition to the anime. It is crazy how that one episode has two of the strongest, most exhilarating moments in the East Blue saga back to back. It builds up the desire to see Arlong pummeled so well that it should not come as a surprise that the Walk has been re-animated like five different times over the decades. (First one is probably still among the most impactful, but it might be fun to check them out regardless!) Meanwhile, I feel that these episodes also display why I felt Belle-mere (their adoptive mother) wasn't cast too well in the live-action. The original has so much 'violent tomboy grit' with the side of her head shaved and her very brusque way of speaking, yet in the live-action, she's a total soccer mom whose nuances aren't there beyond a single moment of slapping her daughter. (The shot on Arlong in the live-action is not something I count because the impression that scene left behind was that she was soft and hesitant in pulling a trigger.) I think this adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko is one of the most admirable 'normal' individuals in the series for being a woman who does not lean towards nurturing ending up adopting daughters and struggling with it, and I feel the live-action could have done so much more to lean into those aspects than they did.
It's the power of music. It's not fair comparing the LA and the anime, but that the Overtaken theme as they walk to the park was just the perfect soundtrack to that moment. Glad that those who were LA-watchers were able to see it. Thinking to the past few years and we see those "theater reactions" for the Avengers movie and I can't help but wonder how loud a theater would be for this particular scene.

Episode 37 is the episode that officially locked me into One Piece... That Walk to Arlong Paark, with Overtaken music playing for the first time... Still get goosebumps to this day.
I think it’s really to do with the build up, the focus they can give to all the little details and how you’re given more time and attachment with and to certain characters, people complain about how long One Piece is but that’s part of the magic of it, all the time you spend with these characters makes you care about them more, Live action was much more limited with their time so everything falls short of what the anime and manga are able to reach with emotional impact, what they did with the time they had available was great though

Now you know the live action is good, really good actually. But the anime/manga is another level. The way they built the tension, the small details like Bellemere not deny her children even didn t knowing they are listening, the village people knowing Nami sacrifice. And of course the Arlong Park Walk, almost a trademark the show. The music theme of this scene, Overtaken, is my ringtone for years.

For these last 3 episodes I have never cried so much in an anime. My heart! I love the live version and the way they did it but I love the way the anime did it even more. I was crying so much during all three episodes. It's so sad. And I love it that the alive version did it almost the same when Nami asked Luffy for help. I broke down. And that cliffhanger at episode 37, why? I did love the way it ended with Luffy going straight to "Whose Arlong?" cause he wanted to go straight to who hurt Nami. I'm loving this anime so much!
Luffy in the anime is much more stoic about the whole situation. He doesn't care about why she's in trouble, he just waits for her to ask for help and doesn't lift a finger until she does. The hat scene has been a classic for years now, it's important to him more than anything else in the world it's his "treasure", so by putting it on Nami he's saying the same about her. He values his crew more than anything else and will go through anything to protect them. This becomes an important theme in the story of One Piece.
This is what I love about Anime Bellmere. She was such a badass and fought back instead of giving in for her daughters, her marine instinct must have taught her that ❤
This is the same episode where I got HOOKED into One Piece. A lot of people told me before it took like 200-400 episodes to reach moments where you might be hooked. Nope. Only took me to episode 37 or 38.
Also, love the way Luffy shows up after Nami suffers a complete breakdown. In the live action they split it, the villagers come after luffy has helped her. In here luffy enters after the worst has happened i.e. villagers went to get massacred despite nami trying to stop them
Loved this reaction, such impactful episodes. As much as I liked the live action, there’s so much more in the anime. Bellemere has more personality in the anime her death is done justice, the village and nojiko know of Namis struggles, they fight to die for her, the voice acting. It’s just all incredible. ❤
He don't need to know what happen .. all he know .. dude named "Arlong" messed with his friend and he want to kick his ass.. no questions asked .. That is Luffy.. my number 1 favorite main character ever created
Something Asian Cinema in general do really well is milk every emotion. Whether it's anger, sorrow, vengeful, jealousy, or happiness, the scene doesn't stop until its milked every drop.
Bellemere is one of the marines with morals. Can only count a few since most of them are really advantageous of the position and view justice in different way. One Piece dives about real life issues that you will be able to encounter more soon!
I have a habit of specifically seeking out ep 37 reactions. I did not watch the anime, i read the manga, but when i read "help me" i knew i was in for somemthing special. The anime episode elevates it by showing the actual walk to alrong park. Every bit of that scene is seared into my memory. When the live action came out, i wanted to see how OP normies reacted to it, which led me to your channel. Im so glad you all are on this journey, its a joy to watch Oda's masterpiece pierce into your hearts as it did mine. I look forward to your continuing journey. I think you two should re-react to the live action after you reach the grandline in the anime. Im not sure which episode it is, but chapter 100 is the end of the prologue as well as the strawhats reaching the grand line. Arlong park ends in chapter 95, so the live action is saving logue town for season 2. I suggest this because i would like to see new fans relive the live action experiecne, and then get hype in the last scene that teases the marine antagonist in logue town. Ill be waiting for you, in the grand line, in paradise, in the new world, in chapter 1098, and im certain you two will enjoy every single second of it. Come and join us when we finally learn what the one piece is.

And THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is why I say the live action didn't do justice to Nami's flashback! They did amazing overal, it's still a great show, but they really dropped the ball with this one and seeing people who watched the live action first watching this now and reacting like this, I'm more sure of that than ever.

In a live action they had the cut out a lot of stuff including major villains that worked under the other villains cuz you would have took too long and some of it would have been really dark with like nami's storyline. They had the cram like 60 episodes into eight episodes. Like for example, we're in juano right now currently like episode 1000 up and it took three and a half years to tell that story and we're just at the end that shows you how much you're in for . I promise ya you will love it lol
8 episodes was the dumbest move...why other tv shows have 10 or even 13 episodes but when you adapt one of the longest stories ever made you out 8 ep per Season...

Alot of people keep saying it was stupid for Bellemere to admit she had 2 kids when in reality she actually saved Nami and Nojiko's life. It was explained in the manga that even if Bellemere pretended that she didn't have 2 daughters, the 2 girls would've been forced to escape to the sea where they'd have no chance of survival given that they'd have no time to gather food and other essentials with the Arlong pirates around. Bellemere knew the girls would have a better chance of survival if she just paid for them and sacrificed her spot. There is some logic behind her noble sacrifice.
It's understandable to want to make comparisons with the Live Action, but think of it as an Alternate Universe. Just try to avoid thinking something is "supposed to happen" because it happened in the live action.
TBH it is natural for people to compare. Much of the posts in the comment section are comparing live action to the anime or manga. Once we leave Arlong Park everything will be new.

If they are that particular model or any model more premium then those, they do have built in noise cancellation. (assuming you guys are unaware, if not ignore the rest.) Should be the yellow button on the side of each mic. I believe it's a double push (maybe a single) and the front LED on each mic should turn green. You can also play around with the gain, it sounds like they're on high which is better for outside. For inside, I would try medium or low gain. Good rule of thumb is if when you're talking and the volume meter goes into the red at all, its too high👍 Keep it up!❤

Live action Bellemere was just a middle aged woman who would totally have kids not a young woman who had the role of mother thrust upon her. That’s why I found it awkward when LA Belle slapped Nami it’s like get your shit together lady.
Hachi wasn't in the live action....I got called out on that in another reactors comments. His name was in the credits but the showrunners came out and said he wasn't actually shown at all. Someone one messed up the casting credits or things got changed after they made them. There was an octopus statue at Arlong Park which is a nice easter egg. He will (should) be in the LA if it goes forward for many seasons, he's important.😂 You saw how the anime does things more impactful. Bellemere's death, as good as it was in the LA...is just way more intense in the anime bc it's more fleshed out where it was kind of rushed for time in the LA. And...You got your first walk! The walks are legendary. The OST for it ('Overtaken') is still used and it's another THING in One Piece for reasons. So many things....😁

A minor difference between the anime and the LA: in the LA luffy knows the story of Nami, but here, he does not, so when Nami is crying saying "you don't know anything", that's totally true, Luffy does not know a thing. And now, with all you've seen of this arc, you can ask yourself: how would have you done it in a LA? It would have been really hard to remove parts and not ruin the emotions/story. Once again, GG to the teams for the result. Scenes that have been hitting hard in the anime are in the LA. It is the same screen when Nami cries looking to Luffy and say "Luffy, help me". That's part of the wink made to the fans, but not as a poor wink, it's more a "since it worked in the anime, let's make it work in the LA".
It's just a cartoon about a goofy rubber pirate kid, right? 😏 I've seen roughly where you are now, you know it gets even darker. And even better. There are a _lot_ of moments that will make you grateful for not being week to week.

About tattoos, in japanese culture they are extremely taboo and closely associated with the Yakuza (japanese mafia). So when the villagers saw Nami with an Arlong tattoo they were extra appalled. And as a way to take some of the heat off of her sister/make her feel like shes not alone, Nojiko also got tattoos of her own. I love that detail

There is a huge difference between the original and the live action. In the anime original, Luffy didn't stay to listen about Nami's past. He didn't know anything about what happened there. The only thing he knew is that Nami was crying and she was screaming "Arlong". For Luffy, it was enough!

I'm glad you guys watched the live action, but I'm REALLY glad you went back and watched the anime for this flashback. As good as the live action was, this flashback wasn't done the justice this anime delivered because every piece of this backstory was masterful.

Hachi wasn't in the Live Action. He was planned - they have the full concept of how he would've looked mapped out, & he wasn't the fishman gambling against Nami. That guy has an equivalent of himself in the anime/manga
The walk to Arlong Park, colloquially referred to as 'The Walk' by the fandom, is something that the anime added that wasn't really impactful in the original manga, but it turned out to be such a strong and epic addition to the anime. It is crazy how that one episode has two of the strongest, most exhilarating moments in the East Blue saga back to back. It builds up the desire to see Arlong pummeled so well that it should not come as a surprise that the Walk has been re-animated like five different times over the decades. (First one is probably still among the most impactful, but it might be fun to check them out regardless!)
Meanwhile, I feel that these episodes also display why I felt Belle-mere (their adoptive mother) wasn't cast too well in the live-action. The original has so much 'violent tomboy grit' with the side of her head shaved and her very brusque way of speaking, yet in the live-action, she's a total soccer mom whose nuances aren't there beyond a single moment of slapping her daughter. (The shot on Arlong in the live-action is not something I count because the impression that scene left behind was that she was soft and hesitant in pulling a trigger.) I think this adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko is one of the most admirable 'normal' individuals in the series for being a woman who does not lean towards nurturing ending up adopting daughters and struggling with it, and I feel the live-action could have done so much more to lean into those aspects than they did.

It's the power of music. It's not fair comparing the LA and the anime, but that the Overtaken theme as they walk to the park was just the perfect soundtrack to that moment. Glad that those who were LA-watchers were able to see it. Thinking to the past few years and we see those "theater reactions" for the Avengers movie and I can't help but wonder how loud a theater would be for this particular scene.

I think it’s really to do with the build up, the focus they can give to all the little details and how you’re given more time and attachment with and to certain characters, people complain about how long One Piece is but that’s part of the magic of it, all the time you spend with these characters makes you care about them more, Live action was much more limited with their time so everything falls short of what the anime and manga are able to reach with emotional impact, what they did with the time they had available was great though

Now you know the live action is good, really good actually. But the anime/manga is another level. The way they built the tension, the small details like Bellemere not deny her children even didn t knowing they are listening, the village people knowing Nami sacrifice. And of course the Arlong Park Walk, almost a trademark the show. The music theme of this scene, Overtaken, is my ringtone for years.
It is very cool to see that you are experimenting with audio and thumbnail etc, because although it seems like a lot of work. It is actually such an important thing for the growth of your channel, and we want to see you succeed ❤
For these last 3 episodes I have never cried so much in an anime. My heart! I love the live version and the way they did it but I love the way the anime did it even more. I was crying so much during all three episodes. It's so sad. And I love it that the alive version did it almost the same when Nami asked Luffy for help. I broke down. And that cliffhanger at episode 37, why? I did love the way it ended with Luffy going straight to "Whose Arlong?" cause he wanted to go straight to who hurt Nami. I'm loving this anime so much!
Luffy in the anime is much more stoic about the whole situation. He doesn't care about why she's in trouble, he just waits for her to ask for help and doesn't lift a finger until she does. The hat scene has been a classic for years now, it's important to him more than anything else in the world it's his "treasure", so by putting it on Nami he's saying the same about her. He values his crew more than anything else and will go through anything to protect them. This becomes an important theme in the story of One Piece.
This is what I love about Anime Bellmere. She was such a badass and fought back instead of giving in for her daughters, her marine instinct must have taught her that ❤
This is the same episode where I got HOOKED into One Piece. A lot of people told me before it took like 200-400 episodes to reach moments where you might be hooked. Nope. Only took me to episode 37 or 38.

Also, love the way Luffy shows up after Nami suffers a complete breakdown. In the live action they split it, the villagers come after luffy has helped her. In here luffy enters after the worst has happened i.e. villagers went to get massacred despite nami trying to stop them
Loved this reaction, such impactful episodes. As much as I liked the live action, there’s so much more in the anime. Bellemere has more personality in the anime her death is done justice, the village and nojiko know of Namis struggles, they fight to die for her, the voice acting. It’s just all incredible. ❤

Something Asian Cinema in general do really well is milk every emotion. Whether it's anger, sorrow, vengeful, jealousy, or happiness, the scene doesn't stop until its milked every drop.
Bellemere is one of the marines with morals. Can only count a few since most of them are really advantageous of the position and view justice in different way. One Piece dives about real life issues that you will be able to encounter more soon!
I have a habit of specifically seeking out ep 37 reactions. I did not watch the anime, i read the manga, but when i read "help me" i knew i was in for somemthing special. The anime episode elevates it by showing the actual walk to alrong park. Every bit of that scene is seared into my memory.
When the live action came out, i wanted to see how OP normies reacted to it, which led me to your channel. Im so glad you all are on this journey, its a joy to watch Oda's masterpiece pierce into your hearts as it did mine. I look forward to your continuing journey.
I think you two should re-react to the live action after you reach the grandline in the anime. Im not sure which episode it is, but chapter 100 is the end of the prologue as well as the strawhats reaching the grand line. Arlong park ends in chapter 95, so the live action is saving logue town for season 2. I suggest this because i would like to see new fans relive the live action experiecne, and then get hype in the last scene that teases the marine antagonist in logue town.

In a live action they had the cut out a lot of stuff including major villains that worked under the other villains cuz you would have took too long and some of it would have been really dark with like nami's storyline. They had the cram like 60 episodes into eight episodes. Like for example, we're in juano right now currently like episode 1000 up and it took three and a half years to tell that story and we're just at the end that shows you how much you're in for . I promise ya you will love it lol

Alot of people keep saying it was stupid for Bellemere to admit she had 2 kids when in reality she actually saved Nami and Nojiko's life. It was explained in the manga that even if Bellemere pretended that she didn't have 2 daughters, the 2 girls would've been forced to escape to the sea where they'd have no chance of survival given that they'd have no time to gather food and other essentials with the Arlong pirates around. Bellemere knew the girls would have a better chance of survival if she just paid for them and sacrificed her spot. There is some logic behind her noble sacrifice.
It's understandable to want to make comparisons with the Live Action, but think of it as an Alternate Universe.
Just try to avoid thinking something is "supposed to happen" because it happened in the live action.
TBH it is natural for people to compare. Much of the posts in the comment section are comparing live action to the anime or manga. Once we leave Arlong Park everything will be new.

If they are that particular model or any model more premium then those, they do have built in noise cancellation. (assuming you guys are unaware, if not ignore the rest.) Should be the yellow button on the side of each mic. I believe it's a double push (maybe a single) and the front LED on each mic should turn green. You can also play around with the gain, it sounds like they're on high which is better for outside. For inside, I would try medium or low gain. Good rule of thumb is if when you're talking and the volume meter goes into the red at all, its too high👍 Keep it up!❤

Hachi wasn't in the live action....I got called out on that in another reactors comments. His name was in the credits but the showrunners came out and said he wasn't actually shown at all. Someone one messed up the casting credits or things got changed after they made them. There was an octopus statue at Arlong Park which is a nice easter egg. He will (should) be in the LA if it goes forward for many seasons, he's important.😂
You saw how the anime does things more impactful. Bellemere's death, as good as it was in the LA...is just way more intense in the anime bc it's more fleshed out where it was kind of rushed for time in the LA.
And...You got your first walk! The walks are legendary. The OST for it ('Overtaken') is still used and it's another THING in One Piece for reasons. So many things....😁

A minor difference between the anime and the LA: in the LA luffy knows the story of Nami, but here, he does not, so when Nami is crying saying "you don't know anything", that's totally true, Luffy does not know a thing.
And now, with all you've seen of this arc, you can ask yourself: how would have you done it in a LA? It would have been really hard to remove parts and not ruin the emotions/story. Once again, GG to the teams for the result. Scenes that have been hitting hard in the anime are in the LA. It is the same screen when Nami cries looking to Luffy and say "Luffy, help me". That's part of the wink made to the fans, but not as a poor wink, it's more a "since it worked in the anime, let's make it work in the LA".

About tattoos, in japanese culture they are extremely taboo and closely associated with the Yakuza (japanese mafia). So when the villagers saw Nami with an Arlong tattoo they were extra appalled. And as a way to take some of the heat off of her sister/make her feel like shes not alone, Nojiko also got tattoos of her own. I love that detail

There is a huge difference between the original and the live action. In the anime original, Luffy didn't stay to listen about Nami's past. He didn't know anything about what happened there. The only thing he knew is that Nami was crying and she was screaming "Arlong". For Luffy, it was enough!
