It’s my first year as a real estate agent and the exposure is amazing! Jim Shitdick went through it, so the rest of us have to as well! It’s so wonderful that my employer is gracious enough to pay me in experience!
I do not always see eye to eye with you on all subjects, but this post is entertaining and what you say has the ring of truth. Yes the ring of truth. Keep up the good work and keep your chops up. I, will try to do the same, when work, family, time , and desire allows.
Dude... Take the rich guy in the band, coach him so he can be good enough to be a good lead guitarist, fund an album record and a tour and you'll have your most succesful band ever imo x) The best part is : he didn't even ask to be composing shit. The only problem is : when he will start to use the line "I paid for everything, I should get this or that privilege", you gotta be ready. Because he definetly will do that a some point.
I'd take the rich guy too, but I would make sure he knows he's in with a few caveats. 1.) You are a probatinary member. No creative input/control while learning how to really play. 2.) Your main role is to pay to for stuff the rest of the band votes on (within reason and without any future consideration of being paid back). 3.) You will practice, learn, and play whatever parts we give you. 4.) Once the band agrees you have enough skills, you will become a full fledged member of the band. At that point you will be allowed to have equal creative input. 5.) Failure to follow any of these directions will lead to immideate expulsion. I think if you can get him to sign something like this, he should be able to join.
+Matt Jones I have never played in a band, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. That being said, if a someone is paying for everything in a band, the rest of the musicians are his employees - meaning that they don't have a say on whether the person who is paying them has a creative input or not. You cannot expect to just boss your employer around.
Then again, it's kinda like a suggar daddy type of relationship : he pays to be with a "pretty band" even though he knows he's getting milked. Obviously, if the dude was like "I've got an idea and funds to make it happen so work with me", it's different. Didn't seem to be the case here though.
Ya Glenn, my Sciatica is acting up today and you just made it feel better with some good old laughs and smiles(when you freak out on idiots)...lol Have a great day from Arizona!
Lol i don't get people. I even paid for Reaper, which i didn't have to pay for. But i want them to have my money so they can keep making awesome stuff. Support the industry
Sorry Glenn, if he has money for a bus and all that you're right he'd have money for lessons, but if he hasn't taken them by now he's clearly on the fast track to jumping on the "bass is easier I'll play that" band wagon ;)
Hey Glenn, just wanted to say that I really respect your straight forward nature. You call bullshit when you see it, I also respect that you are never above adimitting when you are wrong. I am the same way, in which i tell people how I feel in plain terms. Just wanted to say I am a bass player, who knows every part to every song, changes my strings, and pays in cash when in the studio. Just letting you know we exsist. As someone who prides themselves on their musicianship it bums me out that so many bass players phone it in. I see it at shows all the time. Cheers man!
This series is priceless :o) I wonder why there are so many asshole-attitude driven people into music. That's a creative and artful kind of doing and one doesn't expect that. And that's not only be found in backyard bands people but look at how symphonic musicians treat audio engineers sometimes. Oh gosh, if they all knew how they act on pure ego based illusions. Soooooo much fun to watch this. Thank you. Cheers
Hey Glenn! I know we're not your target audience, but your videos have really helped me setup our sound at church and understand equipment more. We don't have a sound guy and I was thrown in the role because apparently guitarist=sound guy? Anyway, thank you for everything you do. Also, even God can't help our bass player, who doesn't come to practice but shows up 5 minutes before church starts and expects to play.
People that want to be musicians don't realize that only .001% will actually break though. Everyone else needs to have a career (a very good one) first, then do music as a side gig. The world has changed and nobody will give a shit about your band. Do music for yourself and not for money, because you won't make any money.
Exactly. In my teens up to my early 20s I played in a band with my best friends.. just for fun, and it was. We went off to college. We're still very close friends. One owns a home improvement business, the other is a CEO of a tech company, and I do software engineering. We all can afford anything we want. I'm setting up our new studio at my home now and it'll be amazing when its done (one of the reasons why I watch Glenn). We've got a friend that owns a club we can play at.. no money.. just all the beer we can handle. We'll just do it for us and friends, and it'll be a blast. It took us a couple of decades to get here, after being poor AF for a long time. What came to me so naturally on the guitar when I was 17 is a nightmare now. Youth really is wasted on the young.
@@Micas099 if you really can afford anything how about invest your money into best possible producing and make your band famous and popular? I guess you can't afford this.
Micas099 very true man, only now after working very hard and long hours in my career Can I now finally buy the shit I want and I’m comfortable to not actually need to do it, only for fun/shits n giggles. 🤘🏻
+Anti Phase I have over ~2.5 in assets right now (not bragging - follow along), and combined with my buddies/band mates something like 4.5. Yes, the members of my band' net asset is something like 4.5 million. We can afford a very high quality production. The point I'm making here (where everyone else seems to agree) is that it takes a really long time with a great (non-musical) career to get to that point. ... meaning.. I'm 51 now and it doesn't make fiscal sense to try to take my band and become popular or even recognized. Music is a side gig for us.. a hobby.. one I can fund anything I need for us to play clubs and such because of my day job. My buddies can buy anything they want for their part in the band. You seem to think that if some band has money, they will automatically become "famous an popular". That's not how it works. Only an extreme edge case is going to be famous and popular, so my point is to not even try unless you've got some ridiculous talent and the money to pursue it. You have to have both. Talent without money is nothing. Money without talent is nothing. So for you personally... no amount of money is going to make you a known musician.
It's pretty cool to see that people are actually actively recording and sustaining this business. I personally don't know more than two bands who actively practice their instruments and record music to pass out at shows. Despite all of the animosity, this gives me hope.
I'm only doing it because I'm broke as fuck, otherwise I got too lazy to pirate stuff. I only pirate when something isn't readily available, geoblocked, out of print and obsolete as fuck (thanks Nintendo for ruining ROM sites!), or I really cannot afford it and the alternatives suck ass (I'm looking at you, Blender).
@@ZILtoid1991 I completely understand that struggle. I've been there. I use to do it as well and honestly probably still would be. I lucked out and got a settlement deal out of a crash with a company truck and that's the only reason I even have any of my studio stuff lol
Yes but what if his sister's team gets to a final and they have an out of town gig the same day? All band members need to be reliable or there's no point.
As a software developer, it bothers me to no end when people think that pirating software is fine. I studied and practiced for year - just like any musician (and some bassists, or so I heard) - to be able to do what I do, and then some dickwart comes along, begging to get the software that I wrote for free because "I only typed words into a computer. How hard can it be?". Should I say the same for a musician? "Well, you just plucked some strings on a guitar. How hard can it be?" I never understood the mindset of these people
MechMK1 a musician has to do stuff in real time... over and over. A dev uses a bunch of libraries where what they want to do is already done and include that and configure it for their purposes. Not even remotely comparable. I guess if you write functions and actually debug your software you deserve to charge more than $15...but not much more.
I'm a software dev too, and while I agree with paying for the software is the right thing to do, the DRM that punishes the people that actually paid for it also needs to die in a fire. freedustin: How about you stick to music, and not talk about things you don't understand. Using libraries is a hell of a lot more than "configuring", and if you think configuration is trivial, well, you've not done anything very complicated at all. In other words, if you're so damned smart, what have you written that's worth $15?
Absolutely. I have no problem with anti-piracy checks like "Connect to a server, send serial key, get token", but the shit that Denuvo and others are pulling off is just insanity.
rk6314 If it were to stick to things I understand, that would be computing in general, not music. So you are a dev? But are you a programmer? They are completely different things. Devs deserve less than 1/20th what programmers deserve. Everything devs do was made by programmers. All libraries, languages, IDEs are not made by devs but actual programmers. These are made in bytecode, not anything you can just read. It's all got to be proven on paper first, then it might work on a computer after bug fixes. What have I written? You first, you brought it up. I don't write software, I break it.
@@freedustin >IDEs are written in bytecode I assume you're trolling. Quite literally everything you spout are buzzwords that a teenager picked up while lurking /g/.
Troll or not, I’m fairly certain that’s a troll. Purely because no sane person could possibly shit on the Most Metal Band to Ever Produce Music, POLYPHIA. It’s physically impossible.
John Mc indeed, the worst thing is that because of people like that people make their opinion about Christians whereas there was not a single truly Christian thing about his behaviour. He was pretentious, disrespectful dick, not a good human being.

Ah man, needed this rn! I recently put an ad up to try finding band members, but I snuck in a "no brown M&Ms" style thing so I'd know who actually bothered to read the details... the number of people who clearly didn't read is bad enough, but then there are the ones who did read, passed the "no brown M&Ms" test, but then FAILED AT EVERYTHING ELSE!!! On the up side, no one's hurled abuse at me yet, but holy crap at this rate I'm probably better off just working on my weirdass solo stuff and saving myself a fuckload'a trouble!! x_x So this video was exactly the stress relief I needed for the night haha, and that Distrokid stuff sounds interesting too, might give it a go one day when I have something worth poisoning all the things with...! XD
Damn man I wish it was, but Glen is right. I do know a couple douchebags who are literally that fucking arrogant and self absorbed. If he's a troll he's a DAMN fine one.
I love that distrokid let's you spilt the earnings so that my last band can still not pay me anything after I played on, recorded, mixed, and did the artwork for the demo they put out! Should have negotiated that before I left but lessons learned I guess.
Man, all of these episodes remind me of when I was in a band about 15 years ago. We were all genuinely good at our instruments but our other guitarist was dead set on not practicing to any cover AT ALL. His rhetoric: NO COVERS! (Self entitled “prog” prodigy wannabe). Not even to warm up. Needless to say, that with only playing half hashed versions of our own music that wasn’t even completed, our group timing sucked hard and everyone was all over the place. Dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. I wasn’t a part of that group for very long and that entire situation with that band is what actually catapulted my decade long hiatus from playing guitar.
Ouch, that's quite a lengthy time. I understand your insight though as I've been in a few "bands" back home that ended up the same way as what you've described. Doesn't help when 2 out of the 5 guys are the only decent players. Timing is everything! So so important. Now, anytime before playing with someone new, i simply ask, can you keep time? Otherwise it's always a shit show and waste of time.
My band and I put an ad out for a guitarist. We had a response from someone who finished his response with ‘Also, could I borrow a guitar? I don’t have an electric one of my own’
Watching your videos is practically an internship i feel like i should pay you but i will pay my respects by listening and providing quality recordings even though i have a studio that is the epitamy of jerry rig...but thats what i got and what im used too, i use an ipad garageband (yes i know i know) and a windows laptop with a drum sim i switch between amp sims and multi fx pedals i dont focus to hard on one single genre the idea is so keep from getting pigeon holes and instead of one album i just may have multiple albums inndifferent genres but piece by piece my little studio gets better like my recordings. My compression work is par at best still havent got it yet but composition is my strong point. Engineering is my trophy. Thank you! Billy fubar
Just used distrokid to release my album “Regardless” by my band, Dr. So! I couldn’t recommend it enough and I learned about it from your channel! Cheers Glenn!
Audacity & Cakewalk are free, they may not be the high end software you want, but if you're on a budget they're 100x better than pirating software. Both are actually very easy to setup with Line 6 Pod units, and just about every other unit that can deliver audio via USB in to your Mac/PC. Also, if you are a Mac user, Garage band is super easy to use and extremely cheap to purchase.

At the end of the day it's all about how you play your guitar and how you position your hand to dampen down the noises that you don't want, but your videos are simply awesome. Thank you.
Exposure HA-HA-HA-HA. That still makes me laugh. And I'm a musician I get the "Exposure" routine from venue owners. And you've got to love the "I'm Doing You A Favor Just Talking To You" !!!
I was re-watching the old ones over and over again, really missed these videos! Thanks Glenn!
Disableton was kinda smart i give him that. :D
Just like we should pay to play because the bar is after all giving us a place to play. Kills me dude. You will forever be my favorite recording channel to watch and I do receive the emails as well. Keep it metal brother.
Lulz!,, my career started in a big way when an engineer (who nobody has ever heard of for obvious reasons which will soon be apparent” told Stevie Nicks “ listen lady, you’re a has been, you need me a lot more than I need you”
Since i bought my Studio One license, and my waves plugins, im feel better with my mixes. Love you Glen, thanks for your great rock n roll work
Guy with the instrumental prog track was trolling imo.
It’s my first year as a real estate agent and the exposure is amazing! Nobody in any professional climate was ever paid in their first year, they all needed to get their name out there before they can expect to be paid! Jim Shitdick went through it, so the rest of us have to as well! It’s so wonderful that my employer is gracious enough to pay me in experience!
6:38 Has to be a troll, no one would be that stupid right?... Right?!
ozthesoundchaser anything's possible
It's a copypasta from the Djent group on facebook actually.
I thought it was a troll until the second screen shot, now I’m not so sure.
It is. That would the work of Sithu Aye. He even jabs himself a few times in it.
Scotland the brave. Gwenn got rekt
This was record setting. Off the charts HILARIOUS. Thank you Glenn.
Thanks, Ike!

Good stuff, Glenn. I hate when people don't want to pay for others' work but they want to be paid for theirs.
"You'll be the next Bob Rock. "
I rather be myself and not work with you
I LOVE the new segment, Spectre Sound Studios.
Brilliant stuff!
Damn it’s been awhile. Thanks, Glenn!
Love your channel Glenn. RE: this episode, some people just don't, or don't want to,......."get it". Keep up the great work.
I clicked this with lightning speed. I only have one thumb now...
THANKS GLEN!!! 🖕😁
I do not always see eye to eye with you on all subjects, but this post is entertaining and what you say has the ring of truth. Yes the ring of truth. Keep up the good work and keep your chops up. I, will try to do the same, when work, family, time , and desire allows.
4:11 I'm a christian and when I read that, the cringe made me physically bend in ways I didn't know possible.
Every now and then I feel sad not to be gigging anymore. Then I see a video like this and don't feel so bad anymore.
It worked out alright for Metallica...
+Matt Jones
I have never played in a band, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.
That being said, if a someone is paying for everything in a band, the rest of the musicians are his employees - meaning that they don't have a say on whether the person who is paying them has a creative input or not. You cannot expect to just boss your employer around.
@@Tigermaster1986 I see your point.
Haha dude, I did the same! I agree completely.
@Oleh Hults I think he means "I don't understand them", not "i do not see these folks"
Great as always! Cheers from Latvia!
Cheers man!
This series is priceless :o)
I wonder why there are so many asshole-attitude driven people into music.
2:32 I have a friend who does this.
When we decide to meet at 8 we tell him to be there at 6.
Haha we did the same with our drummer. When we wanted to play at 2pm, we message him saying "starting at pm"
This stuff is gold, stumbled across this channel, in these depressing times this guys really is awesome
damn that rich guitar player sounds like the guitar equivalent of Lars Ulrich lmao, shouldve taken the deal XD Metallica would have.
Funnily enough, I was making the comparisons to Metallica in my head as well...
Funny enough. You're both idiots.
If Lars died in 1994 now everybody think he Is a Genius
Hey, be nice. Lars is is a perfectly average drummer.
God damn! That last guy was honesty such a class act it's cool to see people keep their heads on straight
People that want to be musicians don't realize that only .001% will actually break though. Everyone else needs to have a career (a very good one) first, then do music as a side gig. The world has changed and nobody will give a shit about your band. Do music for yourself and not for money, because you won't make any money.
You'll just about be able to pay your bills if you're lucky. And even that won't happen right away, it will take you years to get to that point.
Glenn is the best
You always brighten my days Glenn
A surprise, sure. But a welcome surprise nonetheless.
I love stupid musician texts. I know you're kind of on the fence about it. Just make them as they come. I love it!
Lol dude lives in the world of so many young and dumb punks.
That can get frustrating I am sure.
This episode is definitely a gem.
Wasn't that Misha who posted that? hahah or a copypasta on the Djent group
hugsss brother
Yay! I always look forward to these Glenn.
Cracked software never even works to the fullest extent. Always worth buying it. Get the updates, get everything for it and it all properly works lol
Kerry Cronic Vlogs Pretty much... an that guy was whining about the cost of Reaper, which is actually very, very reasonable.
@@sparkleshyguy85 totally dude lol but I guess that's why this series has its name. Hahaha

The only reason to bail on rehearsal to attend your sister's soccer game is because you're trying to hook up with one of her teammates!
what if his sister was really young? it would be so wrong (and shitty).
John Mc ...well, the coach may count as a teammate...
some people value family over other things.. it's really not that bad
Yes but what if his sister's team gets to a final and they have an out of town gig the same day? All band members need to be reliable or there's no point.
missing practice to hook up vs missing practice to see sisters game? You are a piece of shit man lol
Wow I should watch this with popcorn lol. Tought I had seen the lowest point but I was wrong lol. People never stop disappointing
How hard can it be?"
I never understood the mindset of these people
MechMK1 a musician has to do stuff in real time... over and over.
@@freedustin >IDEs are written in bytecode
I assume you're trolling. Quite literally everything you spout are buzzwords that a teenager picked up while lurking /g/.
You go, Glen! Your family rocks!
Troll or not, I’m fairly certain that’s a troll. Purely because no sane person could possibly shit on the Most Metal Band to Ever Produce Music, POLYPHIA. It’s physically impossible.
Key word Sane
FINALLY! I’ve been waiting for another one of these!!!!
As a Christian, I'm seriously sorry for assholes like that. Keep on doing great job Glenn!
hey fellow Christian, that was hard to watch wasn't it?
John Mc indeed, the worst thing is that because of people like that people make their opinion about Christians whereas there was not a single truly Christian thing about his behaviour. He was pretentious, disrespectful dick, not a good human being.
Especially talking about using stolen software too.
yep was very hard to listen to that part... problem is, we Christians have become so passive aggressive... Our actions should reflect Christ, and not our mouths saying we are, which is just so Pharisee-like.
@@moheuropeanassult You can't steal software. Stealing removes the original item.

6:00 That was actually Sithu Aye's copypasta lololol
Mark Eurenz Cabusas lmaoooo
4:38 Glenn, you hit the nail right on the head. THANK YOU for saying something that needed to be said.
I don’t have an electric one of my own’
6:00 is Misha Mansoor from Periphery hahaha
Sithu Aye actually
Misha might've posted that one later too tho
That was actually Sithu Aye's work. Misha just copied it.
Thank you!

All the best Glenn and Julie.
Thank you, Glenn, for pointing out the existence of false converts, so very glad that you know they exist, much like metal posers.
3:20 is such a fucking chad. Based practices for sure.
