Today's vlog is a dose of the reality of what RV life in Mexico is really like. Spoiler alert: it's a rollercoaster. This week was filled with incredible highs as we travel to Guerrero Negro a mecca for whale watching and some serious lows as Liz ride the wave of Montezuma’s revenge and we deal with our first run-in with attempted bribery.

So glad you recovered Liz. Montezuma’s Revenge can be a real trip downer. The whale encounter looked absolutely incredible and they seemed so gentle in their actions and very curious. I’ll take whale snot on my camera any day lol. Safe travels and stay well!

So jealous of the whale experience, that's a bucket list item for me. Also, for the record, I totally understand the banging your shoes thing. Toni and I have spent the week in a dirt site and it's been raining as well. The trailer keeps betting full of dirt and mud because of that. So yeah, we're kicking the shoes on the steps to try and alleviate some of the mud! Safe travels kids!!!

I drove the route south of San Felipe in 2010 before they paved the highway. THAT was a beatin", but was an amazing adventure. Now it's all 70 mph with hardly a bump.
Love the whale segment but I can relate to Liz! I always kick my shoes on the side of the car in the winter before getting in! Less snow inside! I’d probably do it wit dirt too if I were in that circumstance! Be safe!

Love how they load you from the pick up truck to the panga - hilarious! We saw so many greys when we were anchored in Mag Bay & up the mangrove canals - just incredible. Wow - so cool you got to touch them! I never get tired of watching them. Love San Ignacio - some of my dad's ashes are in the town square there.

If you are forced into a bribe, as you pretend to reach for the money, tell them you'll need a receipt. End of bribe attempt - it always works.

Guerrero Negro is very, very remote and more remote than Alaska for sure!!!!! The Baja Peninsula is very remote and, then, a DC-3 roared over me as I was driving into town. That's long ago, but it's very lightly populated down there - God help you if you have car trouble. It's not so bad with a good travel companion, but I traveled along on this trip. AND there's ZERO infrastructure - get a cup of coffee and it's like a part of someone's house and the coffee takes like yesterday's brew - horrible!!!!

We have been on 2 whale watching trips with no whales. Christine would really have loved the whale watching trip you guys were on. Stay safe down there.
It's the best one because if you go during peak time you're guaranteed to see them. And good shot you'll get to touch them!

if it was me who was sick the RV would not have been travelling that day! I've had the tummy bug 3 or 4 times while in Mexico. the first time being the worst.... I even threw up about 6 hours into it and then started feeling better after that. I dont know if there is such a thing as some people having a stronger resistance to it... usually if one person gets sick and the other doesnt I place the blame on eating different things and one person getting food that wasnt cleaned or prepared properly. I really loved the looks of that oasis!
Yah stomach issues suck. We ate the same thing when I got sick. We shared our meals for the two nights prior. So it definitely wasn't that!

I highly recommend San Quintin if you're looking for an authentic experience. Just did a month here and it was filled with great food, really nice people, and a lot of dust. By the way, wife got sick too. Not from water....I think from Hot Cheetos 😂
I bang my feet too, it’s a girl thing! Also, we were just as excited as you both were when we saw the whales too! It’s the second best day of my life. And the hot springs in Puerto I TAS where very cool! I’m reliving my trip from 2020 through you…recommend a tour through Santa Rosalia, it was a pleasant surprise.

OMG! The whale watching experience is the most amazing thing ever! WOW... Just wow! Super sorry about the sickness, serious bummer. We had a group that went freshwater fishing to El Salto lake and two of us got super sick. We struggled through it since we spent so much money to be there, but it was brutal. Again, you experience one of the worst things about Mexico for me, the Policia or Federales trying to jack you up for some money. I have only traveled with guides who picked us up from the airport, so they always take care of all the bribery stops we have had over the years.
Unfortunately, our guides always have to pay something and they tell us they have to because they live there and there will be a time when the Policia will see them again when they are alone and it could get ugly. It's a shame they can't just pay them enough so they won't feel compelled to try and get money out of you like that. MY fear is one day they "could" demand money and if you don't comply, they plant some marijuana or even some throw down ammunition in your rig. I know, it may never happen, but I can just imagine how bad it could be for you if it did. Glad the cameras kept them from pushing it.

It is a serious bummer and was not a fun experience. But definitely a reality of RVing here. Hopefully this was our first and only of this trip!
When we were down there (for 4 months) we were advised to drink Coke EVERY day until you adjust to things, neither of us got sick and I have huge stomach issues.....
Nice. We don't drink soda at all so I'm sure that would do worse things for us than anything else haha. Some peoples biomes do better down there than others. Dennis never gets sick
Hi, I was wondering the availability of craft beer at the grocery stores in Mexico.
Pretty limited to non existent. Craft beer isn't a big thing here. I'm some stores you can find it but usually hipster stores in popular towns.
I'm really glad you had a great time in Baja, we live in La Paz..That checkpoint just before San Ignacio, seems to be the worst offender of this type of scheme. I feel bad for the guys that feel they need to do this type behavior to make a living, but I wouldn't comply in any way either.. I'm glad you didn't feel the need to either. Safe travels!

Noooo, you missed Bahia San Luis Gonzaga 1 hr south of puertecitos through the same highway, its a great place to RV and experience
There's too many great places here! We'll have to come back when it's warmer up north (and I'm not sick).

So also if you get sick from food or water take this pills, they are very helpful it's call top ron...Si have fun and enjoy yourselves as you travel everywhere, any questions about any Latin country I will glad to help.

Great episode! We only got about half way down BCN. Can hardly wait to go to BCS next winter. Score having camera running to fend off bribery. We just got a dashcam so there's always a little reminder people are accountable for their actions. What company did you use for whale tour?

What is the best time of year to go to Guerrero Negro? You really are living out my dreams as I am obsessed with both whales and monarch butterflies. I am determined to go to Guerrero Negro and also to the mountains in Michoacan to the Sancturio Mariposa. I will manifest this (via the divine) and it will happen!
I suppose I should've actually watched the video before I asked about the best times to go (Jan thru April) ... I have seen this phenomenon on so many various shows and channels and they all go to this exact same place so I am determined to go there :)

Hello guys! I just found your channel. And I have some questions for you. We want to buy an RV to go from North America to South America. My husband wants a sprinter or transit van, but I think that's too small and would prefer a small class c. No longer than 24ft.
Since you have Class C, can you tell me how long it is? Is it good to travel down south? Are you going to Argentina?

We would not want to travel the pan America in this size RV. Smaller and narrow is definitely better!
Yeah, those muchachos just North of San Ignacio are crooked as he'll. They went straight for my rum, pulled the bottle out and were all "Para mi?" And I was all no senior. Gotta watch them!

Our cats names are Oliver (grey one) and Pilar (brown one).
Always wash your hands before you touch food,I see many people eating street food without washing their hands, when you touch food with dirty hands you can pass pathogens and bacteria from your hands to your mouth causing you to get sick.

No. The water is fine for basic things. Just not drinking as a glass of water.

That's WEIRD about a military checkpoint soliciting a bribe. Never happened to me, and I've been through them a lot. It is pretty common with municipal police though. In 2 years I've only had that happen once. You just haggle a little over how serious your supposed offence was - lol. They'll often threaten to impound your vehicle, but they're just trying to scare you into paying something ridiculous. $20-$30 is the going rate from what people tell me. Just don't disrespect the cop, and play along like it's all above board.
Guys the peninsula is divided into two... Baja California and Baja California sur. NOT BAJA CALIFORNIA NORTE. 😊

After eight trips to Mexico and many more border crossings than that, my best advice is definitely never ever brush your teeth with the tap water. Even if you think it's safe, always use bottled water.
I will say though Montezuma's Revenge will not give you a fever. It seems that you must have had a regular stomach sickness. Glad you're feeling better!

For me personally & having traveled to Mexico, I never brush my teeth with tap water nor do I even rinse my brush with tap water, only use bottled water. Having been sick was a horrible experience.... no bueno
you are being way too cautious. I've been in Mexico somewhere around 600 days now and always use tap water for brushing teeth and never gotten sick. simply dont swallow and you'll be fine. its much more likely to get sick from improperly washed veggies... lettuce being the most notorious.

Mexico is a beautiful country and we love visiting but I will never take my RV/Home there due to the corruption of the police and cartels. The whale experience looked amazing.
It was amazing! Yes driving here adds another layer. But it's also so convenient. And next week's vlog shows you why taking your RV there is worth it
