After almost one month in Baja California, we are back. We had a great time in our truck camper boondocking on beautiful beaches. The whole trip we were thinking to ourselves, Would we take our 5th wheel to Baja? When we headed south to the U.S. border in a borrowed truck camper this kept going through our minds. With our experience, this video should help you make the right choice if you are planning on heading south to Baja Mexico.

We have a Lance 1172, i can go anywhere i want, pull my boat or enclosed trailer. I believe that going from a fifth wheel to truck camper was the best thing we ever did.... just my .02
Thanks for the input Bill! We truly enjoyed our time in this classic camper. It made us realize that our 5th wheel is VERY limiting on where we can go.
I've been loving your Baja series, brings back wonderful memories. Our family first went to Puertecitos on the Sea of Cortez in 1965. I was 7. We spent all school vacations down there, and then some. Back then, the road was dirt (and bad) past San Felipe. Later, it would be paved, then the pavement would quickly erode until they paved it again. I can't imagine taking a big RV down there. My parents ended up with 50 years on the Baja, with many adventures like yours. I think they were the original overlanders in their Baja bug with tent on top. The last 35 years they lived half the year in Baja and half in AZ.

I was hoping for the best but expecting a big NO on taking our 5th wheel down there. When we were watching y'all driving that narrow road and passing the 18 wheeler, I looked at my husband and said OH HELL NO! We are really enjoying watching your Baja adventures.
Haha! Yea it would be stressful. Do-able but definitely nerve-wracking. We're glad we had a truck camper for this. Glad you're enjoying the videos!
Just got back from 5 months in Los Barriles with our 34' fifth wheel. Yeah, there are occasional tense situations, but you get used to it pretty quickly. The trick is to not worry about slowing to whatever speed you're comfortable with. Mexicans aren't like Americans - they don't get pissed if they have to wait a while to pass.

It’s a matter of preference, and your choice of lifestyle.
When I graduated collage, I took off for three months in a truck camper to the smoky mountains for an overland backcountry adventure. It was a great summer adrift boondocking. Today I’m 40 years older, retired, and we travel via a luxury 5th wheel pulled by a luxury pickup truck, and stay mostly at 4-5 star RV resorts.
At your age, I hope you figure out how to do both.
Yes Steven we totally agree. I think for this trip the truck camper was the right choice. Not all trips though.
We personally will not take our 5th wheel that far down it's just too big, but in the states and resorts it's been fine. Thank you for watching.

It was a refreshing change to see a series done with a truck camper. I love my ‘79 Okanagan 8-6”. Next on the list is to do a complete solar setup and update the windows and maybe a Apco heater. Hope to see you guys doing more of these road trips. ✌️🇨🇦
We really enjoyed the time in the truck camper also. It gave us great perspective, we plan on going smaller in the future!
I really like some of the camper models for truck beds. Some of them have slides. Small rigs do have space issues and it can be a little claustrophobic. LOL Thanks for sharing! Donovan and Jodi

Hey guys really glad you are enjoying the videos, we have been trying to film as much as possible. As far as ice goes you can ask them if the water is purified, I personally didn't ask often. We haven't had any issues. Thanks for watching.
What an interesting and fun experience you guys took on! I feel like crossing borders is a big goal for a lot of RVers (at some point) and we are always interested in seeing people's experiences with that. Oof the "bad weather" CON of the truck camper hit hard--we live in a 38' 5er and it seems cramped ON A GOOD WEATHER DAY... so we can't imagine being shut inside for 2 days in a truck camper!! LOL. Wow this is the second time that we have seen a cassette toilet; they definitely seem like a pain LOL. "PROBABLY LIKE 6 MONTHS!" "Mmmmmm... probably like 3 months." Hahahahaaaa that was a familiar exchange 😂. Lots of great info in this one, guys.

@@AdventureEndeavor Well it's definitely better than the 35' we had... but when our pets all get in a "mood" and start ripping around in here, it can get wild! LOL. When we are no longer full-timing, I (Raini) would love an airstream... but that would be as small as I could handle. ;) You guys are BRAVE... and Melissa, working with that itty bitty toilet... OOF.
Yeah I can see that, our big pup takes a lot of room! Other than that it's a manageable. Airstreams are awesome but pricey.
I am thinking about taking my 37' Travel Trailer down there.. obviously I will be limited on where I can go but are there places that are still worth going to with that big of a TT?
Yes I think there are plenty of places, you'll just to be careful upon entry to Beaches and some dirt roads. We have a 33TT now and I would confidently take to to the bottom of Baja
Got any friends who did this trip with two wheel drive and airing down? Did you have to use the maxtrax?
We mostly used the traction boards for leveling. We did have friends who brought a 31' 2wd class C who got stuck on sand and their Maxx Traxx definitely came in handy!

Truck camper no, car insurance yes. Idk about trailer I would imagine you would need insurance as well

You're welcome! Yes, how ideal would it be to have different rigs for different adventures?! Maybe something to save up for if that's what you decide you want. 🙂 We were lucky to have been able to borrow the truck camper we used in Mexico. We are glad this video helped shed some light on the pros and cons.
Even that truck camper was too big for some of the places I go. I have a Four Wheel pop-up camper for out of the way places. Ladies NEED a urinal (like the hospitals use) in a truck camper, or you'll have to empty the cassette every day!

Do you guys have a Berkey? Life changing. You could pull water from a creek and be totally good. Might consider it. We have one. It’s amazing!
We do not, I'll definitely look into it. Might be tough to store at times, but we like being creative!
@@AdventureEndeavor It actually collapses into itself so when you move from place to place you can just empty it and it nests inside of itself. Then when you get to your next place… Put it back together and fill it with water… And you’re good to go.

Did you have to pay in Pesos or do they accept dollars? How was your safety in Baja. You spoke about roadside fuel, did you actually use it, was it quality?
As far as payment it depends on the location, we normally paid in Pesos. When you swipe a credit can you can choose at that time.We felt safe the whole time and never had a bad experience. We did not buy the fuel in the bed of the truck it seemed sketchy, overall a great trip.
I know it’s not a topic that may interest everyone, but we’ve been doing keto for well over a year and I’ve been curious how hard it was to stick to keto down in Baja where so many meals are high carb?
It was definitely difficult at times. We ate a lot of ceviche, fajatias and salads. We cheated on occasion, we did bring our own low cab tortillas, but eventually we ran out!

Ours was 21 ft as well! We really encourage you to try it! Maybe you could start with just a trip to San Felipe and work your way further another time?
