    🍤 Solo Run Rules: 🍤
    ►I can only use the title Pokemon in battle. No switching at all, HM Pokemon are required.
    ►No use of items in battle. Potions, TMs, etc. are allowed outside of battle.
    ►No use of skips/exploits. This includes the Pokedoll Marowak skip. Badge boost is unavoidable.
    ►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.
    ►I play on x3 speed and use the in-game time for the run along with resets to rank these runs.

    I enjoyed your little fireside chat about mimics. I've never been bothered by Voltorb and Electrode's designs for the same reason. The woodgrain and chisel marks on the Hisuian versions in particular are some nice subtle details that most people seem to have missed.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yea, they are also polar opposites of the Kanto ones. The Voltorb is more happy while the Electrode is angry which is the complete swap of the originals.

  • @zuloph

    I've never thought Voltorb/Electrode had a bad design for the same reasons you laid out, mimics. I just thought they were boring designs only because, again like you said, they weren't used enough in the overworld in the games as possible encounters. They designed it to be a mimic-esque creature and then hardly utilized it.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For sure. At a bare minimum, I think looking at normal things like a snake, a seal, a rat, or multiple regular birds and thinking 'the mimic one should be fired on the spot' is the overall message of what's dumb. Best design? Nah. Worst design that should pander to the masses just to get some more views? Definitely not.

    • @iantaakalla8180
      @iantaakalla8180 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And then later in they make Pokémon that looks like classic mimics but are just creature inside a chest waiting to evolve into the best hazard clearer blockers.

  • @lordmcsmith
    @lordmcsmith ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That was an... oddly impassioned defense of Voltorb's design. But I agree that it's a pretty clever troll on the player. First it looks like an item on the overworld, then it attacks and uses its supreme speed to go first and immediately self-destruct lol.

      I wouldn’t say too much passion, I don’t really care. I just see the pandering that goes on in the internet a lot. I just knew I wasn’t going to make the opening or theme of the video be ‘this Pokémon design sucks balls and whoever made it should die’, lmao.

    Oct 7th 2022, I finally got to catch a live stream of yours. for only about 10 minutes. I shortly got a call that my mom was rushed to the hospital for a heart attack and drove back home on the spot. It was a tough few months for her, revealing heart disease and other health issues with a few surgeries, but she's finally pulling through.
    anyways, sorry for getting personal. it def became an instant memory during that Starmie stream I can't ever forget, when that call came through
    on a much lighter note here, it's great to have tons of videos to catch up on. the new UI changes look slick as hell, and super glad to see your channel's growing. it's not just your gameplay strats but your personality as well that really makes these runs so fun to watch. you def deserve the growth. much love

      Appreciate that, brother. Glad you enjoy the videos and they take away the sting of a bad memory. My dad had triple bypass surgery in December and I had a couple of health problems that took a while to get past towards the end of the year so I get it! I'm just trying to have fun. I recognize that if you treat TH-cam like a job, especially when only like 0.001% of people ever make enough to live that pipe dream, that you'll just get burned out and disappointed so I treat it like my hobby. The video making process is part of it and I'm just trying to enjoy myself so it's cool to hear you enjoy them too!

  • @Marlonbc90
    @Marlonbc90 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I loved the video, love your vibe, I like that you were pretty appreciative of Voltorb and you didn't just bash on it.
    But I also think that there are a few broken TMs, like toxic, substitute and mimic above all, and for grading purposes imo it is fair to consider pokemon who need to rely on these TMs much weaker
    Also, the smooth jazz at the end is lovely

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes you have to look at how something is portrayed and take a deeper look. I don't think the design is that bad in all honesty and it just gets the same repeated flak on all corners of the internet. It's like folded on itself and it's just parroted too much.
      I agree with toxic and substitute. Only the most desperate runs have to go to those lengths but Mimic is kind of a staple. Even some good runs utilize it. Maybe in Yellow version it's more broken because the moves are significantly better in the latter half of the game but I don't think I'd want to take points away for mimic. Maybe Toxic but I consider that a cheap strat anyway and have only used it once ever and it's on like one of my last ranked runs.

  • @catsandcake1849
    @catsandcake1849 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the idea of Voltorb being a mimic. And I think they're only in the power plant because that was the only place it made sense for wild Voltorb to live. But they really missed an opportunity with not leaving them as traps in places that made sense: Rocket Hideout, Fuschia Gym, hell, maybe even Silph, Vermillion Gym (because electric), and Mt Moon (because of course Team Rocket would set traps when they realize someone is attacking all of them)

      Lmao, half asleep, 'up then a' was my process and I forgot I learned a fourth move. Whoops lol. On a side note, I think the real time runs are insane sometimes. They take too much caution and add in too much of the user's errors in the final time. Whenever I play gen 2 runs, I have to go by that but I'm always like 'why don't I just play at x4 speed with the same rules' lol.

    This is just one of those pokémon that remind us that the games were originally designed to be single-player experiences (Nintendo was smart to pressure Game Freak into including multiplayer.) That's the real reasoning but I always appreciate the support! Only like 10~% even make it that far sadly but glad you did!
      Yea, I was surprised by this one. I expected a slog. Like an Exeggcute level run with few redeeming qualities and it makes me think that Electrode could do very well considering it has a minimum battle Brock split and doesn't have to waste as much time. This one felt like a very satisfying puzzle to put together for sure and that's my favorite types of runs where I hit a wall in practice and I'm like 'double reflect, use light screen here and there' and just rely on that steady Sonic Boom damage for the problematic rock/ground types.

    Finally someone who gets the point of Voltorb's design! He's a spin on rpg mimics, so looking like the in-universe item chest is the entire point (you know it would be evil if someone made a heal spot mimic instead of just an item one). On top of that, his stats and moves are built to capitalize on surprise. He's fast, so he's hard to escape from and crits a bunch, and he gets self-destruct to make him a big threat. Granted, he sucks in battle and I never actually like using them. The Magnemite line are much better.

    I like Voltorb, It's probably the easiest pokémon to draw at a base level so even the least artistic child could still draw a pocket monster while looking deeper Voltorb's shape also taught things such as how shadows and lighting are represented on spherical objects, ''It's just a pokéball with eyes, how uncreative'' I hear so often but like... Pokéballs took creativity and as you said, it's got the mimic angle, granted I do have the question how realistic it is for a trainer to mistake a 50cm tall pokémon for a baseball sized object but they serve a game mechanic all the same.
    Only think I could dunk on this ball for is its movepool, but that's hardly an uncommon Gen 1 issue, body slam should have been learnable at least.

I know we already have Hisuian Voltorb and Electrode, but it would be cool to see an Electric/Normal regional Electrode with higher Attack to really make the best use of Explosion trolling 😝
    On a different note, I wonder how much better a Voltorb Gen 1 run would be if it got Sonic Boom earlier (say, in its starting learnset or somewhere between level 6-10). You might be able to beat Brock at a lower level, but on the other hand you might still just have to grind a lot anyway between then and the time you get Thunderbolt.

    • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it could shave off like 1:30~ at least. Remember that I didn't grind after Brock and pre-Brock grinding is so slow and inefficient. • @GymLeaderMatt1987
      @GymLeaderMatt1987  ปีที่แล้ว

      Bad. You still have like -25 base attack and it just never does well. You bring up accuracy but you'd need to set up with a move with less accuracy first and use multiple moves just to come close to what Sonic Boom could do. Even if it was a simple screech + tackle, you'd have to be outdamaging 40 flat damage and it just never happened.

    You make a fair case for Voltorb's design and I definitely appreciate its design a lot more now. But I disagree with the Sudowoodo argument. That can't really be considered a double standard because even though the design was inspired by trees, it very distinctly doesn't look like a tree. If it was nothing but a tree with a face on it, then you'd have a point because Voltorb is essentially just a pokeball with a face. But Sudowoodo's design has more to it than simply being a tree with a face.

    Voltorb's (and Electrode's) design is basic and kinda lazy, but it isn't a *bad* design, nor is it ugly (unlike some later pokemon designs like stunfisk...). The mimic aspect is also a decent one, and there are other later pokemon that have a similar theme going on like the foongus line. Probably a big part of why many people dislike Voltorb/Electrode is the basic design as well as them being somewhat rare to actually get a chance to catch (aside from the mimic spawns) rather than have to face like with enemy trainers, and since it learns self destruct so early and early gen AI has no hesitation in using the move, it leaving a lasting negative impression of being annoying, same for mid-late game geodudes+gravelers that go boom. For many people that do use one, they find it's fast and...that's about it. It can be a good support pokemon with it's raw speed to do stuff like setting screens, but offensively and defensively it doesn't have much going for it.
    For the run-no surprise it was a rough brock split until getting sonic boom, and then afterwards it isn't too bad after getting past surge to get thunderbolt, except for random trainers and bosses with ground types that can bring voltorb to a screeching halt. At least unlike magnemite voltorb is fast and able to outspeed most enemy pokemon, making taking hits from weaker pokemon less likely if it can OHKO, or just kill a turn earlier to prevent the enemy pokemon from using one last move to damage it like slow pokemon often have to deal with

      For sure. That’s why I said the onis was on the developers to implement it a little early and make it more of a mechanic than throw it into an area you don’t even have to go to. I also resent the Stunfisk comment! I think they aren’t ugly at all haha. I am partial to them though but I also like Diggersby as well.

    Why didn’t you use the Drake and Josh meme “it’s spherical” that would’ve been hilarious

      That would have been good! Tbh, I'm a little older and didn't really watch the show so it wasn't in my mind.

    Now that you bring up a mimic, I think the voltorb design works better

      Yea, I like the design. It's good but not the best but definitely not worthy of being fired immediately on the spot lol. That's just kind of crazy.

    Oh boy oh boy, I see 100+ speed and only think of critical hit selfdestructs. Selfdestructs on your brain when trying to accommodate these stats of course lol

      Lmao, even the high base damage wouldn’t be good with that attack stat.

    Or the fact they could've based poke balls on voltorb, but yeah, not my favorite design, but I don't hate it.

      Yea, that's the point. It's not groundbreaking but it's not the worst. No need to goof and gaff on it for being so bad I guess.

    I really thought this would have been the worst looking at its move pool
