Worf trying to get into the batter’s head by casually standing on tiptoe and saying “Death to the opposition” is the best moment.

With yesterday being the 25th anniversary of _Insurrection,_ the official _Star Trek_ channel uploaded the Captain's Yacht scene where Picard asks Worf if he's familiar with Gilbert & Sullivan to which Worf replies, "I have not yet had the chance to meet all the new crew members."
Also he swatted mini drone with the phaser rifle.

Every time I think of this episode it's always that one line that pops into my head first. I love it so much.
I’m sorry but I have to dissent in regards to Seán saying our main characters were being racist towards the Vulcans in this episode. Nah. It was Captain Solok, a literal VULCAN SUPREMACIST, who was the bigot. The fact that he only allowed people of his own race onto his starship AND consistently viewed other races as deeply inferior - that in it of itself is racist. Our main characters were simply exhausted with Solok’s bigoted bullshit. The fact that Starfleet allowed one of their leading officers to behave in such a manner is a whole other nerd discussion. All credit and respect to Seán, but sometimes his readings baffle me.
There is a difference between the crew of DS9 being upset at Solok, and making comments about Vulcans as a whole. Extrapolating from one individual to an entire race/species is a racist action. Solok was a douche, but some of the comments the Niners made were also problematic.
Also, we don't know that Solok was the reason for the crew being all Vulcans. Star Trek has a history of single species ships. In TOS, the Defiant was a ship crewed entirely by Vulcans. We're never really told why some ships are a mixed crew and some are single species, but they have existed since Star Trek's inception.

It’s not so much that the Vulcans are racist in this episode that I have a problem with, it’s that they can use logic to justify anything and everything, throwing morality out of a car window onto a busy highway.
To the commenter above, I’ll acquiesce concerning your first point. As I’m likely forgetting dialogue said by the crew. But I’ll still argue on the second point. Sure, it’s not outright said. But given the context, it’s not at all far fetched to believe he’d only want his own species aboard the USS T'Kumbra and staunchly keep it that way due to his prejudices. It’s evident he expects the same from his crew. Regardless, thanks for the feedback. LLAP 🖖🏼
Basically, what I’m trying to say is, I felt Seán should’ve called out Solok’s problematic behavior; instead of solely lumping it all on the DS9 crew.

This is the episode that has lived rent free in my head since the day it aired. I grew up playing baseball, I love baseball, and I can't be a part of any game without doing Worf impressions. Thanks for revisiting it for us.
I still feel they missed an opportunity with this one to recreate Abbot & Costello's Who's on First routine with Odo & Quark.
Worf is the ultimate comedy straight man. He makes comedy work by just by being so serious.
I don't know. Batman may give him a run for his money.
Basically anyone who is super serious works really well as a straight man.
This is true. "Picard" season three continued this tradition of Worf's deadpan delivery.
I love the effort of taking on the vocabulary of taking on a sport from another country. The subtle differences of saying things like “scoring a home run” (local vernacular is hitting a home run) or “points” (we use runs) or referring to the field as the “pitch” just highlights that you all went though some real effort to put this together. I grew up and still play baseball and the minor differences in jargon makes me appreciate these videos even more because it means that while you didn’t grow up around the culture of something like baseball, you really do dive in (baseball pun intended) try to get as many details as possible. I’ve never heard of Dick Allen, but he seems like a stud - thank you for that!
Fun fact - they filmed at Loyola Marymount University’s field.

me now: most all vulcans are autistic. no seriously, they lack emotional expression, are highly logical, and are often confused or put off by human social conduct. think about it!
From a purely canonical standpoint, not likely since they spend their entire lives suppressing their emotions, otherwise they would be 10x more violent than klingons, From a out of context broad view of ''star trek' yes they are on the spectrum of autistic or they're sociopaths/psychopaths ( being psycho does not 100% guarantee violent tendencies, but the vulcans were very violent in their past)@@kenzieduckmoo
I can't believe you didn't mention one of the best moments of the episode, when Sisko decides that having a crowd of onlookers, even a holographic one, is too intimidating for his team, so he orders the holodeck to disable them, leading to Odo's shout of "Play ball!" coinciding with absolute dead silence. Plus it sets up the later moment when Sisko, finally deciding to relax and have fun, reinstates them all.
Counterpoint to not having a holographic umpire. The hologram can be hacked to call the game a certain way (and Quark might be tempted to do so), but Odo cannot be hacked or bribed into throwing the game for one side or another.
Odo the Umpire is just so perfect. When Sisko sees him practicing the moves I laughed my ass off. And then it being brought back when he sends Sisko to the stands was hillarious
Before taking up acting, Grodenchik played shortstop in semi-pro ball. As a righty, he played left handed in the episode to make it seem that he was awkward and had never played before

As a baseball player, it’s really not difficult to swing lefty and look ok if you are right handed. Actually hitting a thrown baseball is a different story if you haven’t practiced. Throwing opposite handed, if you aren’t ambidextrous, is damn near impossible.
The actual baseball scenes were a nice combination of TV broadcast angles (behind the pitcher) and movie styles (the dugout scenes especially). Not sure if they had a consultant, but they pulled it off very well.

the best part about worf's chatter is he was raised by humans, he knows what human sports banter should be, he's playing it up for the lolz
Fun Easter Egg: the team’s name. While Sisko was apparently a fan of the “London Kings” team (from The Emissary episode), there’s ties between Sisko and the San Francisco Giants, notably with Sisko wearing a Giants cap in this episode. Well, any San Francisco sports fan would recognize the name “Niners”, which is the nickname of another San Francisco team, the football “San Francisco 49ers”. Great nod to The City, and of course also home to Starfleet.
For Temporal Observations…Other than Sisko wearing the team’s cap in this episode, other ties to the Giants are Jake trying to get a (Giants superstar) Willie Mays rookie card in the 5th season episode “In The Cards”, and the 6th season episode “Far Beyond the Stars”, where Sisko met Willie Hawkins, a fictional Giants star player (the Giants then were playing in New York). (Hawkins appeared to be an amalgamation of Willie Mays and Brooklyn Dodgers star Jackie Robinson)
And side-sidenote: In The Cards was directed by Michael Dorn, and the fictional Willie Hawkins was portrayed by…Michael Dorn!
I always love scenarios where your worst player is secretly your best player.
A friend of mine wanted me to show them one episode to see if everything they'd heard about Sisko was true. This was the episode I chose. No regrets. It's one of the best episodes in the show and it's because the characters are so good together. So much chemistry on screen. :)
I would expect Bashir to be able to hit a moving target. Worf had a bit of trouble in that scenario. I forget the episode, but in an opening scene, Worf and Guinan squared off in a hollodeck program involving moving targets. Guinan bested Worf in the program.
She stepped down from her play level to play at Worf's and stomped his arse !
Worf's response "I am NOT a pro ball player!"
Well known fact, and something I have always laughed at, Max Grodénchik was a college baseball superstar, so watching him bumble around is hilarious for so many reasons
I loved this episode. It had heart and that's what Solok never understood.
Years ago, I heard that hitting a baseball is one of the hardest things to do in sports. Pitches can exceed 90mph and the ball being able to move up or down by its own width and a bat that's about the same diameter as the ball. It takes a whole lot of practice. Given these are Vulcan pitchers, it's amazing anyone could hit the ball.
What do you mean ups and downs? there are no Downs in this episode this is the purest episode in all of Star Trek
While there were better episodes of Star Trek, even better episodes of DS9, this was the purest episode of the franchise. If you need to know what this show could be, then just watch this.
I really like Retro Ups and Downs. You need to do many many more. This one was a lot of fun like the actually episode was.
I really wish you would go through the episodes in chronological order. Retro ups and downs is obviously a brilliant idea and will fill the gaps between seasons nicely for years to come, but if you pick out all the fan-favorite episodes now, the fun with this will go down over time. good episodes are of course fun to do, but "bad" episodes are also fun and even boring episodes can be important for canon reasons and gives us the option to talk about what could have made it better.
You do have a point...putting some random "iffy" stuff into this will help us anticipate those special episode reviews...and this one is definitely one of those good ones!
I wholeheartedly agree. I like the chronological layout of the ups and downs for the new series and I think they should do that for the old ones too
I love the O’Brien shoulder. When he walked in holding the shoulder I had to laugh, because I loved the callback. So good.

Wow, I'd need a holographic wheelbarrow to cart my a** home after the game.
It was kind of alluded to but not stated outright, and maybe it wasn't even done on purpose, but one of the reasons the light-hearted tone of the episode was particularly great was because it premiered right after the Voyager episode "Drone" which is one of the most tragic Trek episodes ever and literally made me break down in tears. Getting to laugh again after haven been broken by that Voyager episode was kind of like Trek was leading me home instead of leaving me out in the cold. Watching the episodes now doesn't capture the experience of waiting to see them broadcast on a weekly basis (kind of like getting to watch The Best of Both Worlds part 2 right after part 1 instead of having to wait all summer).
Also, "Find him and kill him" is just about the best Worf quote ever. I was surprised to find when I asked Michael Dorn about it once that he couldn't actually place what episode it was from (for the record he said his favorite DS9 episode was Soldiers of the Empire).
It would have been just as funny if Rom had been a natural at baseball and hit a home run every time he got up to bat.
As someone who doesn’t like sports at all, I still find this to be one of the most entertaining episodes of any series of Star Trek - love it!
When Sisko is waiting for Kassidy by the airlock, he swings the flowers he's holding like a baseball bat.
Of all the series in the ST franchise, DS9's character placement, selection and development (regulars and guests) is the best (partly the writers, partly those in charge of casting, and of course the actors). Everyone is like someone we know in real life.
I cannot wait for the coverage of more light hearted episodes like this!
It must have been a blast for the groundskeepers to see these actors out on the field in full alien makeup playing ball 😂

There are a lot of Star Trek episodes, even episodes I consider really great episodes, that I don't seek out to rewatch. But this is one (along with Badda Bing Badda Bang) that I go back to over and over again.
Also, I think Sean missed the point just a little bit of Rom saying "It looks like a lot of fun," and Sisko changing his attitude. It's not just that Sisko's had time to cool off. It's that Rom, in that one line, reminds him of what baseball is really all about: to come together as a community and have *fun* together. O'Brien alludes to it earlier, "This game is supposed to be fun." And that's the aspect of the game that conservative Vulcans like Solok can never grasp and in the end Sisko resolves to rub it in face by resolving to have as much fun as possible. Not to say it's true for all Vulcans. I feel like the Logicians we see drinking with the Niners after the game understand somewhat; afterall, it's only Solok that storms off in the end. Yes Sisko cools off and sees the error of his ways, but Rom reminds him of the true meaning of baseball.
I remember being really excited seeing Jake in the Atlanta hat growing up as a Braves fan.
The ensemble is the main reason (other than the dark edge) that DS9 was my favorite series.
At it's core Star Trek has always been about it's lead...
TOS was very much Shatner, then Shatner and Nimoy, then Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly.
The others had moments, but they really didn't start coming into their own until the films.
TNG was the same way with Stewart and Frakes, then Data, took a few years for the rest of the crew to become more than set dressing.
Even Voyager was really Janeway's show with a bit of Paris on the side. Then Tuvok came on more even by the end Chakotay and Kim were pretty much just after thoughts.
This is also one of the things DSC suffered from. Yeah there is character development in there, but honestly do the characters MATTER?
This is also why I like Lower Decks and SNW...

I know others will say different... But I didn't feel anything when Tasha died...
I didn't care when Culber died, or Airiam or Cornwell... Or Giorgiou... Cause who cared?
Now if they would have killed Culber LATER yeah... But at the time they did... Meh...
Ok, Discovery's premise was that nobody is safe, and I get that.... But why bother getting invested in a character that might not be there next week.
This episode of DS9... A lot of them in fact, would NOT have worked in the other franchises....

My father and I are huge baseball fans and that's one of the things that hooked my dad into Deep Space Nine early on. We still watch this episode regularly for giggles.

My biggest question - how do you fit 20 people plus Odo into one of Quark's holosuites and not have everyone crammed in shoulder to shoulder?

I never thought about it before, but the Eddington and Solok comparison makes sense. Of the two, Solok is worse. Eddington was just trying to evade capture and fight for his cause. He would have done that to anyone. He just knew the buttons to push on Sisko. Solok though. Solok made it his life to torment Sisko for being "inferior".
Bashir really should have been able to hit every time he was at bat. Which should have lead to, even in a montage, the Logicians purposefully walking him. Equally frustrating.
A couple of things that could have been added to Temporal Observations. This was the second episode to involve Michael Dorn and baseball. In "Far Beyond the Stars", he played the baseball star and friendly rival to Benny Russel. Also, the Atlanta Braves were mentioned in the the TNG Season 1 Finale, "The Neutral Zone", by country singing de-frostee, L.Q. "Sonny" Clemmens. He was wondering if the Braves were still losing. Since he was frozen in the early 90s, this frustrates me as a Braves fan. They were awesome in the early 90s. 😠
As an American baseball junkie you did a wonderful job with the game mechanics Sean! Home plate collision rule revision! This is in my top 10 Trek episodes! 🖖(though it's run, not point)
Some recreation in a time of war...I was stationed at Dharan Saudi when Khobar Towers was bombed in June '96...a week later my crew set up four TF-1 light carts and played volleyball for two weeks @ 0100 hours following our shift, until being shut down by officers who declared it 'unrespectful'. It was a morale builder...
@Sean - thank you, thank you for this brilliant "Ups and Downs"! Now, I'm an original 'TOSser" as I watched the original series with my parents in it's original run starting at the tender ages of 4, and of all the sequel series since, DS9 with it's incredible multi-character development has been my favorite (until SNW came along...). Coming from a 4th Generation New York City Irish American family, Baseball is part of our blood, and to have this episode with the absolute love it shows baseball be a Trek episode, it can't help but be one of my favorites in the entire Trek canon - and as you pointed out it was a sorely needed breath of air in the midst of a very heavy very dark season.
I am giving you lots of props for the studying up you did on baseball, quite commendable, and as a gay man myself, I am aware that I'm one of the minority that truly follows a sport like baseball (unlike American Football for which it would be impossible for me to care less). Through no fault of your own, certain of your observations subtly show that baseball is not part of your everyday world, and what seemed odd or unusual to you is perfectly normal to an American Baseball fan. Chief of these would be Cisco's behavior. Avery Brooks captures with amazing veracity the American Father Little League Coach - wherein for decades good, fair, upstanding, generally moral fathers (and mothers) when they become the Coach of a Little League or High School Baseball Team with great suddenness turn into "complete dicks" I believe you observed, unless they are extremely careful. Many of these men (and women) had squelched dreams of playing ball in the majors. These Coaches are literally everywhere in the American Experience and for a kid like me, who did not find co-ordination and athletic abilities until Gymnastics in High School and who could barely hit and catch until it was realized that I had some vision problems, having a Coach like Sisko would have destroyed me and I watched that very thing happen to some of my less athletic friends condemned to the roster of a team with such a coach - league rules always placed a son on his father's team, and my Dad was the only one who let EVERY KID play in EVERY GAME for at least 3 innings no matter how good, or how awful they were. His teams (whether I was on them or not) consistently landed in last place year after year, but the Sisko-like Father Coaches of other teams could not understand why SO MANY kids would rather be on my Father's Team than on their more winning squad. Sisko's behavior in the episode was completely familiar to me and any other kid who played little league, right down to and including his treatment of Rom!
A few more baseball fan notes on the episode - I too expected more from Kira being how athletic we'd already seen the character be, up to and including regularly beating Cardassians in hand-to-hand, BUT even an in-shape athletic person her size with only two weeks practice under her belt in the most difficult and important of fielding positions was doomed from the start. The Colonel should have been assigned to SECOND BASE with SHORTSTOP played by Sisko, where his experienced timing, greater height and longer arm, along with his accurate throwing arm would have been perfect for the longer throw to FIRST, allowing Kira to concentrate on the shorter throw and tagging out base stealers (something she'd likely have been good at) which would also meld well with the fact that she was one of the few Niners who could apparently connect with the ball.
And one last quick note - the term is "RUNS". Just like there is no crying in baseball, there are no "points" in baseball either. When a runner scores, they score a RUN.
But enough of that quibble. I absolutely adore this episode on so many many levels, and your ups and mine match almost exactly. Thank you so much for this wonderful retro review, and please, keep up the good work and have a Happy Christmas!

When I introduce a newbie to Trek I show them this episode. No ships, no space, but pure Trek. As Sisko says...it's got heart.
Love❤ as always! On final 80s style mixdown, I suggest a smidge less tape warble affect and substitute it with a tad of low pass filter with a dash of resonance. If you're going for analog, don't be shy:) as long as the overlay vocals are crisp, everyone is happy
I think you did well with the "Sports ball." As an aside, I remember watching Dick Allen play and he was a fearsome opponent when his Chicago White Sox team visited Minnesota.

Just start with tng and go through all old treks doing ups & downs until new seasons of shows come out then resume old shows in between new seasons....WE ARE HERE FOR IT TNG DS9 VOY even ENT...it's content booked for next couple years!!!!

I think that the typeface on the jerseys being the same as the series titles (as well as Voyager and the TOS films) should count as an easter egg.
I cannot think of any other time this font was shown in-world in any Trek show except (now) the holodeck film titles in a few LDS episodes.

Technically we've met (if not *seen* very well) the Nebula Class earlier - the original Nebula-kitbash, with 2 small extra-nacelles instead of a mission pod, was part of the Wolf 359 graveyard scene.
I agree with the Bashir and Worf striking out, never made much sense. What they should have done is show them hit it but the vulcans catch it. Or they make it to the bases but not home run.

This is one of my top 5 episodes. My father in law, a baseball lover but not a Trek fan, loved this episode too. And...they are the Niners, which are my favorite 🏈 team so it was fun hearing that in a Star Trek episode! 😎🤘
Hoping these continue through to next year as well, it'd be cool/interesting to see the ups and downs for episodes that have to do with current dates. Ie, doing Past Tense next september for the Bell Riots of Sept 2024.
If I recall correctly, the original airing was timed to coincide with the World Series.
That it was - I had to record DS9 that night as the Yankees were in the Series that year (not unusual for the Yankees, but still...) and the first game was THAT NIGHT. Imagine how over the moon I was when the game finished and I turned my VCR on to watch DS9 and THIS episode came on for the first time!!
Sean is correct that Dick Allen aka Richie Allen was a fascinating baseball player in the 1970s; There was a famous magazine cover of him juggling baseballs while smoking in the stadium dugout.

This is my favorite episode of Star Trek, hands down. The baseball action is done so well and I love how much Odo gets into being an umpire. As a huge baseball fan this episode is such a treat.

also also perhaps Bashir and Worf aren’t the most patient hitters? An experienced hitter should know how to work the count in their favor.
It makes sense to me that Kira is bad at sport despite her physical prowess and combat training. She grew up in refugee camps and became a soldier while still a child. When would she have the time for athletics? It’s mentioned in Way of the Warrior that she never learned how to play. I think that’s why her face fell when Sisko told them the competition would be baseball.
Ah, this is all plausible...but what about the fact that Kira does play Springball. In one episode (in Season 4, I think) we see her playing Springball on the station (with Bashir and Garak among the spectators).🙂

I'm almost 63 years old. Twenty years ago, I thought Star Trek was over. So nice to see younger people carrying the flame.

So much humor and fun.. DS9 is by far the best, the only downfall of the series for me was not enough Vulcans… so this episode is one of the best of Trek for me.. oh and baseball!

Love this episode, but the fact that there is not a scene with Garak complaining about having to make a ton of baseball uniforms, or offering to make some kind of exploding baseball for Sisko to cheat with will always seem like a missed opportunity for me.
If they would have given this the same money and time they did for the Casino episode, they may have. Not knocking it, but this was also a really good DS9 Crew episode.
