The absolute best breed in the world. I have had labs,Jack Russells. Boerboels but the Ridgeback is by far a better family and guarding dog. The rest are good dogs but the ridgeback is great

We currently have my 6th 7th and 8th Rhodesian Ridgebacks living with us, ranging in age from 10 1/2 to 20 months. I agree with everything thing you say in this video. Back when I first started with the breed I had no idea, but I now think that I'm getting there and have worked out the kind of leadership they need. Best breed on the planet.

Courage, stamina, independent thinking, reserved, alert, assessing each situation for danger.
This is the best description of Rhodesian Ridgebacks I have heard yet. This is where I'll point people for understanding the breed.

I lost my border collie, poppy, 12 years old 4 months ago. She was born deaf and had every trait you explained about the ridge. Been offered a 5 year old ridge girl to adopt, pick her up in two days. Thank you so much for your channel

I have two Ridgebacks. My first was a rescue and my second from a breeder. I’m completely taken by them. These dogs are very special, it’s difficult to describe how great they are. Thank you for your Chanel

Before I got my own ridgeback I encountered a magificent specimen in Granada.
We were out with our guide and took a wrong turn.
We came up on the lawn in front of a manor house looking estate.
On top of the steps in front of the entrance there was a ridgeback.
I got out of the car to direct the driver how to turn with as little intrusion as possible and without falling down the slopes.
While doing that I keept an eye on that ridgeback and he kept both eyes on me.
I am sure that if I had made a wrong move he would have launched at me. But until that happened he just calmly watched what I as doing.
By the time I got in to the car again I was super impressed by that dog, and pretty much in love with him😊
A few years later I bought my own ridgeback.
It has now been 10 years since he passed but I still keep him in fond memory.

I am the owner of male rhodesian ridgeback, 10months old. Everything you say is so true! My dog is stunning, very cuddly, loves people, ok with other dogs (for now).. but at the moments life with him can become very frustating. He gets overexited when he sees my family or friends, jumps at them, he is very voracious and large pain in the ass while we are having a family lunch, and when of leash he can become unresponsiv if there are more interesting things then me around (like other dogs). I am giving him a lot of exercise, and I am taking him to some obedience classes. He is great as loong as I have enough food and in controled environment, but that is not everyday life, right? So I think, besides that, that I need to be much more of a leader to him. I am so glad to have found you! I will enroll your online booth camp. Please keep posting videos about ridgebacks!

lots of things people commonly do with a puppy screws up the dog. most of the issues you’re having with your dog was taught/okayed by the owner. mines 9 months and hasn’t ever jumped on anyone, he’s extremely calm inside. Inside he listens great, outside he’s good on leash and always at heel, off leash he tries to tune me out but i’ve been working on it with him for a while. If I didn’t have to work so much I think i’d have him able to do off leash hikes by now. Check out a dude named peter caine on youtube. learned a ton of stuff from him before I got my first dog. He’s not gonna tell you what you want to hear, he’s gonna tell you the truth. Lots of people get butt hurt by him but he helped me greatly.

Tamara I now have my third Ridgie bitch and they have all been different. My first was an angel from day one, no problems at all with training or recall. Comes the second who was a cyclone for 5 years with a lot of training then came so good. My current is 22 months old and a mix between the two -angel/devil but all I know is they come good with a lot of training, attention and love. You will never be able to trust them around unguarded food. They jump until they eventually calm down with age. Definitely not a breed for a beginner dog owner. Persist and you will have in my opinion the best breed ever, friend, protector and fun. 😉

What about the Boerboel? Their also from SA

I lived in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) for 2-1/2 years right after independence and I never saw a Ridgeback, either in town or on farms and ranches. The most popular breed for the whites seemed to be Labradors. I did see a few Boerboels. The Africans out in the country had dogs that were about the size of a beagle or maybe a tad bigger. They were shorthaired, athletic dogs, and some of them had a ridge of backward-growing hair going down the middle of their backs, just like a Rhodesian Ridgeback. My hunch is that the RR is a result of crosses with this land-race of dog with the Boerboel, or the Boerboel's predecessor breeds.

I'm a dog walker and recently picked up a client with a ridgeback but am having trouble walking him, if he spots something in the bush he'll refuse to move, same when walking in the street he'll just decide to stop. How to get him to move?

    I have a mix breed pup. He's 1/4 a rigeback.
So now I'm looking in to more about the rigeback as I didn't expect some of his quirks. And it seems that some of them are from the rigeback...

Do you believe a RR is a good family dog that can live in a small property like 1/2 - 1 acre?
Can they (the average individual) be managed by all family members or is it mostly a 1 person dog?
Do they tend to manifest resource guarding (like food)?
Being hunting dogs, do you think they can be integrated in a small farm with: other dogs, cats, sheep/goats, chickens? Or will they prey on them?
Can they be petted by all family, kids and elderly and be relaxed?
Or are they too much dog to handle for a small farm daily living and will bring problems?

I know this is a long shot but lately my ridgeback puppy (6 months) has started stepping on my feet. He will casually walk by and step on my foot and keep going. It's not in play/excitement. I was wondering if this is normal, clueless puppy behavior or if he is trying to push boundaries/establish authority. I hesitate to say dominance because that term is thrown around so often. I am working on being a confident leader for him, so if he is being pushy I want to correct it. Thanks!

Interesting stuff. Your channel is awesome. I would love to know more about their dominance leaning towards other dogs. These guys are on my short list of potential new dogs but I need a relatively formidable hiking buddy who I can feel comfortable with in both the open mountain wilderness (with numerous coy-wolves around) AND more crowded hiking trails and morning hikes on the beach populated with other supposed to be but not always leashed other dogs. I wonder if there is some sort of ranking of gender aggressiveness by breed.

    • @nukenet1
      @nukenet1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No I'm afraid that is quite wrong.
South Africa is a Country on the southernmost tip of the African continent.
Zimbabwe, is a separate Country in the South of Africa & it sits on the northern border of South Africa.
Rhodesia was a Country that consisted of what we now call Zimbabwe and Zambia and was situated in South-Central Africa.
