    Lesson Description:
    Have you ever encountered this chord?: EbMaj7(#5). If you have then you’ve encountered one of the harmonic minor scale chords. If you haven't then you might be interested in knowing how crazy chords like that can even exist in the first place. In short, weirder chords come from weirder scales, which in my opinion includes the harmonic minor scale. In this week's lesson we explore the chords of the harmonic minor scale, and specifically the harmonic minor scale guitar chord shapes that I recommend learning as an introduction to harmonic minor chords.

    This lesson on the chords of the harmonic minor scale definitely gets into some potentially confusing theory concepts, but that’s fun right?? :) Regardless, the harmonic minor scale chords presented with the chord shape diagrams that I provide should be simple to play with on your own, even if some of the theory is confusing. I hope you enjoy hearing the weirdness of that augmented chord from these harmonic minor chords (it’s one of my faves) as well as discovering that harmonic minor is one of the sources of the diminished 7 chord.
    I hope you enjoyed this lesson and found it beneficial. Let me know what you thought. Thanks! :)

    Another great lesson. So enlightening to know where these chords come from and how they are built. And, by the way, the evolution in the style of the videos is very nice. I have been looking for this video for years. I'd like to comment on the section where you were explaining why you were going fast and feeling slightly bad about it. There are very, very few courses on youtube ( that are any good) for intermediate players. I already had all the theory training to understand this without a blink or hesitation, but I couldn't find it after years of looking, someone to just walk through building the chords, with the screenshottable graphics that were really nicely made. The same thing happens with intermediate foreign language speakers, who have learned on the street, but can only find extreme beginners or extreme advanced lessons. I am very subscribed now and will go through all your lessons but really wanted to say thank you thank you.

    In natural minor I tend to visualize everything on the fretboard in terms of the relative major. In that scheme, where the tonic is written as the vi and the bIII Is written as the I, the harmonic minor seventh chords look like this:
    IM7#5
    iim7
    III7
    IVM7
    V°7
    vimM7
    viim7b5

    There is one thing i dont understand if my guitar is tuned a whole step down do i need to play all the chords a whole step down also ?

    • @soundguitar
      @soundguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If all your strings are tuned a whole step down you can just play it like normal and everything you play will technically be a whole step down but you can still think of it in standard tuning if that's what you're used to. If you play other people though or are using chord symbols to read off of then you need to transpose what you're playing thinking a whole step up. Do if the chord symbol says C then you need to play a D shape to play a C chord, but thinking that way only matters if you're needing to have the correct labels. Playing on your own you can just play whatever as a normal guitar. Does that answer the question? Let me know if not. Thanks! -Jared

    What was that shred thing you did in the intro

    • @soundguitar
      @soundguitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that was basically playing down the A Harmonic Minor scale starting on the 5th scale degree (with a quick slur up to b6 and back first), then landing on the 7 (G#) on the 6th string and making a diminished chord off of that note (which is the 7th chord of the scale just like I teach in the lesson), then resolving to A minor. hope that helps! :) -Jared

    You know of any Songs using diatonic chords of harmonic minor?

    • @soundguitar
      @soundguitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      They're used briefly all the time but not strictly. Any song that's minor with the V chord as major is borrowing it from harmonic minor. Songs that have diminished 7 also are often borrowing it from Harmonic minor. The others are more rare.

    Can you show s how to play these chords with roots on the 6TH STRING? Why do you only show it with root on 5th string? Bar chords harmonizing in major and minor, root on 6th string. I can not find that anywhere on youtube!!

    That is the re-harmonisation of harmonic minor scale ,,1=minor,,2=dim..b3=aug...4=minor,,5=dominant,,,b6=major,,,7=dim...in every modes there are chords color which are the added notes of the mode...

    Scales come from chords. Context matters.

      Oops, you flipped it. Chords come from scales :) Harmony is secondary to melody

    The III chord sounds hideous, like the guitar isn’t intonated properly or is out of tune by a half step…

      I hear you. It's just a dissonant chord, that's all :)
