Lesson Description:
This week's lesson is a comprehensive guide to quartal harmony and quartal chords on the guitar. Quartal harmony is one of my favorite sounds and this is my favorite lesson I've made so far-I'm really proud of it! I explain what quartal harmony is, how to use quartal voicings in the context of modal harmony, how to use them over normal chords, how Miles Davis used modal harmony and quartal harmony, and more! My favorite part is at the end when I show how to harmonize the minor pentatonic scale with quartal chord shape inversions. They sound completely unique and amazing! As usual there are plenty of examples, practice suggestions, and clear diagrams so you can hear and see what's going on, & so you can practice the awesome sound of quartal harmony for yourself. :)

Quartal harmony can either sound really weird and off putting, or completely refreshing. Personally I find it to perfectly hit the spot after a stretch of playing or listening to mainstream music or music that uses functional harmony. What I love about quartal harmony and quartal chords is how they can actually be used in the context of normal songs and not only in the context of modal harmony or modal jazz.

Your funny it is e Dorian lol you have a D major becuase the f# is the 2 for e dorian snd is the 3 for D ionion lol D major has a c# and an f# As such you are in e Dorian ..

I find myself not only fascinated by your playing. I'm also engaged by your fretboard logic and your discourse regarding the theory. The first time that I saw the structure of quartal chords dissected and analyzed was in an article in Keyboard Magazine from 2000 devoted to McCoy Tyner and his playing. ( I'm a casual keyboardist ). Before that article, I didn't know how those cords were made on A Love Supreme. Since then I understand. Modal harmony came to me a lot easier on the guitar then it did on the keyboard. I knew that when one inverted a dominant chord it had a lot of intervals of fourths. But until that article that I mentioned it never dawned on me that I had to replace the tritone interval that's at the bottom by half step increment upward to get a perfect fourth. I like that you explained that there is modal harmony and functional harmony. I'm definitely re-watching the video so that I can see the use of the scales to sound out not only the quatals that I heard but the tertiary chords as well. It's a very interesting video. Thank you😎

Good lord. I wasted 24 years of growth towards self-improvement in learning musical theory. All I became was a tab baby and Eddie Van Halen-wannabe. I seriously wish these kinds of tutorial videos, coupled to what should have been a maturing mindset existed when I was starting out. 11/10 on presentation of delivery of examples.

I find this quartal/modal concept far out. But as a "conventional tertiary" guitar player as me, I need to know, in traditional notation, the names of the chords you play from minute 6:54 to 8:03. Thank you and greetings from Venezuela!!

I just watched a video about Herbie Hancock accidentally discovering his love quartal chords when Miles Davis told him not to play the “butter notes” so he cut the fat out of the 3rd and 5th, but turns out Miles actually told him not to play the bottom note and he misheard. Now I know how to get this sound on my guitar, thank you so much

I'm stuck at the 2:10 to 2:19 Mark. If we go 1-3-5 for each note in the scale, what happens on the Dm chord (iim). Wouldn't it be D - F# - A if we went 1-3-5 from D because going 1-3-5 from C gives C - E - G. ? I mean, I know you lower the 3rd to make it a minor chord, but just in this lesson or way of understanding how to make these chords, I don't understand how to count the intervals off of each successive note in the scale. Hard to explain what I'm struggling with...sorry. It's probably something obvious, too, but I'm struggling with it.
LOL...maybe a simpler way to put it. When making the 4th chords, I understand that on the one, you count 1-4-7 to give you C-F-B but following the same procedure should give you the same chord shape off of the D, but you are playing D-G-C, not D-G-C# and I can't figure out why. Why is the seventh lowered? How do I know to lower it. Is this the same as lowering the 3rd in a 'traditional' minor chord? Sorry, my ignorance here is likely baffling to anyone reading this.
I’ll jump in - when you do a chord scale in the key of C major, you use the C major scale. Start with C 1-3-5 (C-E-G). Move each note up one note in the C major scale and you get Dm. Keep going like that until you get back to C.
I came here immediately after learning the Shell Voicings and Extensions and all I could think of at 2:40 was "7, sus, sus, M7, sus, sus, sus, 7" lol.
These chords all sound ethereal when only played together, but sound completely different when played with tertiary chords.
Like, sus chords usually add some tension when played with tertiary chords and are traditionally used to transition between chords with shared notes but they sound purely dreamy in this context.
Important question: Can you ride your unicycle while playing quartal harmony on guitar?
