The reason the lack of open world activities doesn’t bother me at all is because I look at Mafia 1 and 2 as linear story driven games. But they are linear games where the open world they’re set in is literally only there to serve the story and acts as a backdrop. If you look at the games this way then I think an empty open world is forgiven.
I absolutely love Mafia 2 (the DLCs less so).
OG Mafia 1 has always been too janky for me. I have the Remake on my ToDo list.

As someone who has finished Classic Mode on Mafia:Definitive Edition, it is basically the way it should be played; personally. Gunfights on Classic Mode is pretty unforgiving, especially since if you're absurdly careless or didn't check your corners like its some sort of Tactical shooter, Tommy dies real quick. As a matter of fact, 1928's Thompson in Classic Mode is a death trap for me, as spraying around the enemy doesn't matter as much when you need to usually one or two-tap them using your arsenals; since they would rip you to shreds otherwise.
Driving in Simulation is an experience, but during my playthrough; I can't use my gamepad for some reason during that, but it is still somewhat forgivable with the car physics. There are parts that are absolutely frustrating to get through (1930s Grand Prix racing where you *NEED* to get into 1st place), but the driving is pretty solid.
My biggest pet peeves are at the on-rails shooter part. I felt like they're not balanced for the Classic Mode *AT THE SLIGHTEST* during my playthrough, though not sure if they did balance it now. The amount of restarts I did was because of how the truck you're driving gets destroyed real quick, and, to be honest; comes down to RNG. I really dislike that part, but they did a good job everywhere else. I highly recommend it for anyone to try the Classic Mode.
One thing I don't like about this remake is there is no photo mode.
The game looks so gorgeous and not having a photo mode is such a waste.

Does this still have that annoying traffic speed limit? or the original soundtrack?
The charm of the original game was then photo realistic faces which added a cinematic story telling to it.
Sadly that is not present in this game but overall it looks fantastic game play wise.
I wish Rock Star put a skip drive mode and cut out extra padding missions from GTA and Red Dead. Then I'd actually have time to play them.

I've heard the all the enemies are bullet spongey and none of the weapons are impactful, if you can believe that.
on hardest difficulty they eat bullets without breaking a sweat
I heard Mafia 3 is considered by many to be the worst game in the series.
Basically, the Mafia devs always over reached. The stories, voice acting, music and presentation in all these games has always been brilliant, but they have an open world map without any actual open world activities. Mafia 3 goes the farthest in trying to remedy the lack of open world activities, but it's a lot of repetitive busy work, so that's why people dislike Mafia 3 the most. A lot of that busy work isn't optional either, it's tied to story progression.
It’s true. Why would you want to play as a black guy in a Mafia game? It’s like playing an Italian in a Ghost of Tsushima game. Makes no sense.

@@DeltaAssaultGaming No offense but that's a really dumbass take. Having a black guy as a protagonist has nothing to do with the quality of the game, lmao. Mafia 3 sucked because it had repetitive gameplay and boring open world activities. The story and characters were fine.
Besides, how does it not make sense?
1. Lincoln is not part of the Mafia. He's trying to take them down instead.
2. Criminal underworld wasn't just old italian men in suits or whatever Hollywood BS you were lead to believe. The Black Mob was a very real thing too - look up Bumpy Johnson or Frank Lucas. Lucas even had an entire movie called "American Gangster" made about him.

A remake done good
It's a good remake, but calling it the "Definitive Edition" is a stretch in my opinion. I think the original game was far better.

If a (relatively) smaller studio like this can do this Rockstar should've definetly done much more with the GTA 3 Trilogy instead of what we got.
I feel that the characters and the story were done better in the original.
Its a nice comfy game that gives my fix of cinematic cutscenes and shooting.
To me, the lack of content outside of the missions -- the lack of map icon barf -- is a massive-massive positive. An 8 hour polished experience like this is much more interesting than a modern 40 hour open world game.
