15:50 it's funny that you mentioned it looking like Die Hard 13:45 because Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza ran on the same game engine a couple of years earlier
Now go back and play it on the hardest difficulty _without_ slow motion and quicksaves. It becomes a really tense tactical shooter that feels like a completely new game, where every enemy encounter is a dynamic endurance round. Really fun.
This game still affects me, all these years later, and I’m not even a gamer anymore. I have flashbacks to moments in the game. When something haunting happens in my life, I hear the game’s chilling score playing in the back of my mind. Most importantly, FEAR set the ultimate standard for me insofar as being the king of *atmosphere* among all entertainment mediums.
EDIT: Apparently later in the video, soft shadows are enabled. And you call it out at 17:05. Awesome man. The fact NO REVIEWER on TH-cam plays FEAR 1 or Condemned 1 with soft shadows enabled is driving me up the walls. Either everyone hates the effect (which admittedly looks a bit jank for being an early soft shadow implementation) or nobody knows enabling FSAA disables the soft shadows. Not using AA for soft shadows can be mitigated by: using downsampling, enabling driver FXAA/MLAA or using SMAA/FXAA from ReShade
I really have to disagree that the expensions were a step down from the horror aspect. Well Perseus Mandate maybe, but Extraction Point (as much flaws that it has) really is the pinnacle of horror in FEAR. The hospital level alone is scarier than anything the base game has to offer. If Extraction Point had a decent and compelling story it would have surpassed the base game imho.
I have beaten this game several tomes on both PC and 360. This is one of the best shooters ever made. I did a full Let's Play and review of this some time back and the most recent Let's Play and review that I did was on FEAR 2: Project Origin
Man, your story with the game is almost exactly mine, right down to not finishing the 360 version. Once I got around the problem of Logitech mice glitching, this was a joy to replay .
I played all three F.E.A.R. games years ago, unfortunately I had to sell them. I recently found copies online and am happy to have them back in my possession. They're backward compatible on Xbox Series X, so creating a playthrough for my TH-cam channel should be fun. 😄 I can vouch this game in particular, which made me jump out of my seat a few times.
Oh yes, this game is by far one of my favorite horror fps games and not just for the fact it might of given young me ptsd from the dark and even the slightest horror things
Miss FPS games like FEAR these days. Only Trepang2 seems to be trying to recapture the FEAR magic today. AAA gaming? Forget about it. I know the entire franchise is available on Steam and GOG, but it's cool that Microsoft added all of them backwards compatible on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X. Can't say the same for PlayStation.
The graphics STILL look good, and the game STILL plays great. Recently re-installed it after more than 10 years since the last time I played it and holy crap! it looks great!
Funny I had a screenshot from when it was still a tactical shooter.. I printed it out put it on the front of my my school binder, in the back had my usual writing in corpses from far cry, God bless that decal limit! Well adjusted kid I'm sure I was!
Did I watch this before? I could've sworn this was an older video but maybe Im just having Deja Vu from watching so many fear reviews at this point lmao
This game gives me some dead space 2 vibes in despite the game not being scary in the slightest I do think the horror elements makes the action feel that much more visceral and enjoyable to play through. Man seeing the new doctor strange made me realise how much I krave for content that has action and horror elements fused in with each other. The two genres makes everything that much more exciting for action junkie such as myself!
FEAR was fantastic; it's the kind of game that could not get a remake because the technology it needed to function has been lost, a bit like how aliens built the pyramids
I really need to give this game another go, I've comepleted every game in the series but the first. I love the moment to moment gameplay but always fell off due to the samey environments.
This game still hasn't been bested in terms of the combat / shooting mechanics in my opinion. Most games are just missing something, as if they try too hard to be "realistic". There's always been the feeling of "lightning in a bottle" with this game that I really want to feel again. I heard there's a spiritual remake coming out soon so I'm looking forward to that
I'm surprised you praise Perseus Mandate. I think you're the first person I've heard to not just shit on it. While I'm not a fan of it myself just hearing someone talk positively about it is refreshing.
Pc, Steam or GOG. Consoles: all of them are backwards compatible on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X. But some require the disc to download and play, FEAR 1 & FEAR Files that include both Extraction Point and Persues Mandate. Nadda for PS4/PS5 and Nintendo Switch.
"they're also not canon, the sequel disregards the expansions story lines.." which is funny because, at least as far as I was concerned I pretty much disregarded the sequel, after about 5 minutes of loading it up and realizing what was going on.. and intense intense vibes of the 5 minutes that I had when I booted up Halo 2 Vista.. not the kind of vibes you want from a fear or a monolith game or any game really.. but if you have a sequel, and you've reduced the amount of movement and control you have over a character, I'm usually out at that point.. you got to do something real cool to compensate. having a button prompt to flip over cover but not being able to lean that's that's not compensation that's gas lighting.
It’s a shame the series fell off in a horror sense so hard after the first one. I can’t even remember anything from 2 aside from “that” ending. Then 3 totally went off the rails and gave you control of superpowers.
5:54 why is that everyone's favourite thing? I can't stand it. Give me physics any day. Don't just fkn disappear on the spot when I'm expecting you to fly over a rail
This game was one of the most boring games I`ve ever played. It just lacked of level diversity, non-scripted NPC, better (non-deja-vu) enemies etc. I think I`ve came to the level 6 and then uninstalled it and installed Condemned which felt somewhat related to FEAR, but better made. It had that "locomotion" in it that made you keep discovering.

Man, you’ve released this just as I’m playing F.E.A.R for the first time
Don't forgot to disable FSAA in settings in order to have soft shadows functional. Use driver FXAA/MLAA + downsampling to remove jaggies
This game still affects me, all these years later, and I’m not even a gamer anymore. I have flashbacks to moments in the game. That revelation at the end was well written and portrayed. One of the best games I've ever played.

I’m happy that someone didn’t disregard perseus mandate right away. I personally really like it.
I think Perseus is kinda crap, especially when compared to extraction point, but I think it's much better than FEAR 2
Well not much of a choice. Considering FEAR 1 modding/mapping never took off, I'll take whatever fear1 content I can.
@@kingdomkey2262it feels unfinished or rushed but it still feels like fear/extraction point, whereas fear 2 feels like a much more generic fps
No this is a game I would actually like to see remade.
I have beaten this game several tomes on both PC and 360. This is one of the best shooters ever made. I did a full Let's Play and review of this some time back and the most recent Let's Play and review that I did was on FEAR 2: Project Origin
The game is the perfect FPS horror game that aged well.
Such an amazing game to playthrough again during Halloween season!
I always felt that the guns from the expansions are like cheap fan mods. Especially the lighting gun.
Oh I am super glad you're covering this franchise since the combat is legendary.

nice! not enough of these reviews

I know Fear 2 took inspiration from Files such as the hospital and subway.
Haven't you done a review of this series already? I recall seeing this in your collection years ago.
We redid it.
Funny I had a screenshot from when it was still a tactical shooter.. I printed it out put it on the front of my my school binder, in the back had my usual writing in corpses from far cry, God bless that decal limit! Well adjusted kid I'm sure I was!
Such a great game that felt ahead of its time.
Cate Archer WHEN?
Absolutely love FEAR and Extraction Point. Perseus Mandate is great too tho. :)
What do you mean by ai in shooters being quote "not that intelligent" isn't that what game difficulty selection is for?
Difficulty usually only affect how much damage you and/or the enemies can take, how many enemies there are and so forth. Not how they behave.
After all the years the ai is still better than most games today
Did I watch this before? I could've sworn this was an older video but maybe Im just having Deja Vu from watching so many fear reviews at this point lmao
We redid it.
@@Gamingpastime64 Right then, thanks for confirming I'm not going crazy lol. Good stuff

I loved this game. All of them, actually
I really need to give this game another go, I've comepleted every game in the series but the first. I love the moment to moment gameplay but always fell off due to the samey environments.
Why did you remove your painkiller videos?
To redo them along with all the other games.

Am i insane or did you already review Fear a few years ago?
He constantly re-reviewing games and deleting older vids, also, he don't care about our comments
Paxton is baxton.
You joke about that over the top death scene but when I was a kid that scene scared me so bad I stopped playing and didn't play it again for 7 years
17:40 If this happens you should immediately shut down your PC, as Alma is getting ready to pass through your screen! 👻
I'm surprised you praise Perseus Mandate. I think you're the first person I've heard to not just shit on it. While I'm not a fan of it myself just hearing someone talk positively about it is refreshing.
Can u still get this game
On Steam and Gog. On Steam it's only available as a collection with both DLCs, FEAR 2 and the FEAR 2 DLC. You can't buy them individually.
You sounded passionate about ai in games.
I love fear and I miss the series
At least we have trepang2 to continue the games legacy

NO necro-incest for you then...boy
I find the horror in FEAR to be horrible.
I find you horrible, but you mom on the other hand is like FEAR horror (perfect in the dark).
