I wish I’ve seen this channel 20 year ago. I took a few lessons from “local pros” at the nearby golf courses. When TH-cam started getting popular I must have watched at least 5 different golf instruction channels and I would rank them from below average to not bad. Now I’ll have to say this channel is the best I’ve seen. Excellent.

Hey JKM, I’m a golfer in my mid 30s returning after a 10 year hiatus. I came back to a deteriorated golf swing with constant slices and everything just felt off, despite consulting various TH-cam “golf instructors”.
I found your channel 3 days ago and have been following along, practicing in the living room in front of the tv lol. I watched your in-to-out series last night, and within a single hour and a half practice session today at the range, I 100% fixed my slice and re-discovered how to hit a draw. Thank you so much for your time and effort in creating these videos. You have, hands down, the best golf instructional videos on TH-cam.

I struggled with my follow thru since I started playing. Watched videos on the follow thru but never worked for me. You nailed it with the explanation of Ulnar Deviation. Thats exactly what I do. Then you hit me with gold when you said "player doesn't know how to accelerate the opposite end of the club". I never thought of getting the clubhead to move faster than the handle. Tried it at the range yesterday and my follow thru was automatic instead of me trying to force it. Thanks. You just changed my game in this valuable video. Been playing since 90's too and everyone I play with tells me that my swing stops as soon as I contact the ball and I need to just let it go. I just never knew how till now. Thank You!!!!

Been trying for 2 years now to make my golf swing look more pro like. Although I'm older, 67, I still hit the ball well with compression, but not consistent enough. I've been comparing my swing almost frame for frame against all the pros and teachers/coaches, and every frame looks just about identical up until after contact. My finish was has been so awful, I hater looking at it. I pretty much was being taught how to get my swing correct right up until contact and was even told "we have to work on that finish". I was doing exactly as you mentioned with the arm out straight after contact, keeping trail wrist unreleased at contact and continuing with club aimed at the target up until horizontal. But that finish looked awful.
So I've been looking hard to find the right video that will teach me how to finish. I found a great explanation yesterday before watching this video explaining how to turn the lead forearm facing up after rolling the past contact. (hope I explained that right). Once I tried it, I realized what I was missing in my finish from contact to follow through. Very relaxing, and really no tension at all in any part of the body. My back has never been happier. I wished I was taught this during my lessons a while ago. It would have made things so much easier and faster to learn the complete swing.
One of the biggest problems I observed while trying the correct video to learn from is how the explanation is presented. That is so important to keep it simple yet concise with the proper steps and in the right order for the average golfer to learn from. Too many go off on tangents trying to explain a simple process and giving a simple drill that hits the point precisely. This video explained every part of why my lead arm was bending after contact and why my finish look terrible. This only the second video I've seen explaining why so many amateurs have a chicken wind type finish who otherwise have a decent swing. I watching this channel and subscribing to see what else I've been searching for.

Keeping the head down and behind the ball until well after impact allows the 2 very important moves highlighted in the video to happen. Pronation and supination of the forearms and radial deviation of the wrists. Freddie Couples does this as well as anyone and is one of the reasons his swing looks so smooth and effortless.

  • @enricowashington5997
    @enricowashington5997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +86

This is exactly what I needed to hear. So many teachers tell you to focus on the body. I am at the point where I am using a lot of body and apparently not enough arms and wrists. Your explanation of flipping in the comments helped. It’s almost impossible to supinate and pronate pre impact. I think the only other thing I may need to guard against is too much forearm rotation in the backswing with this method. Thank you. I have been lacking distance for a while and I suspect this is the cause

I was taught this by the club pro I worked for about 38 yrs ago in college. Not sure why I stopped this move. Have a few lessons over the past 10 yrs with other pros and they all told me this was wrong and I needed to use my body to release. They said “stop rotating your firearms”.
I went back to this 2 weeks ago and my iron shots have more ball speed (added approx 6-8mph), more height and a better decent angle.

I’ve watched more than my fair share of videos trying to SEE what I’m doing wrong in my downswing. Your video has shown me that I’m the golfing type that doesn’t turn my wrists over. I watch my own practice sessions and never looked at my wrists, only my arms, and they always look like the bent ones you shown as incorrect. This is probably why I tend to dip in the downswing as well. My arms seem to be both straight at address, but no matter what, every single time on my downswing, I will dip down with bent arms and push the club through, rather than hold my address position and sweep my arms/turning my wrists (with straight arms) through the shot. This is honestly amazing. Thank you so much for giving me a VISUAL.

what a fantastic video. You are a very articulate instructor. As I am coming to understand the golf swing- the proper way to strike the ball- is the correct hand position at the precise instant of ball strike; and in order to arrive at this position, I must strive to ARRIVE at that correct right arm position (where the right arm is parallel to the ground). It is though I should not concern myself with working the hand/arm positions PRIOR to ball strike, but rather proper hand/arm position at those few milliseconds after ball strike.............Cause and effect, it is all cause and effect.
    Thank you so much

I've been struggling with blocks to push slices for a month or so, ever since I started working on more lateral shift during the downswing, something I needed to get a more consistent strike. I discovered almost by accident at range today, that focusing on rolling my right arm over during the follow through sorted out direction and also added more distance - just what you describe in this video. I perhaps have been resisting this almost sub-consciously, as it feels that the club face is closing rapidly at the point of contact, therefore inconsistent direction is a risk. Your video has given me confidence to keep working on it, and I think both drills will be useful for me. Keep up the great instruction!

Your comment sounds like my issue too. Decent player, but I hit a lot of blocks and weak fades that cost valuable distance in the hopes of maintaining accuracy. Also, a lot of instruction seems to warn us against “flipping” the club and timing issues with a “too active release.” . So, long story short I tried this release technique recently while suffering through another mediocre round and - bang! Suddenly straight shots and tight draws. I never hooked anything. JKM is awesome and I’ll be practicing what he’s preaching going forward!

hey brother, finally someone who understands the golf swing and explains the most critical move in ANY hitting sport... I teach that exact move in guess what? tennis, golf, baseball, hockey... video proof shows that is the ONE move EVERY SINGLE elite player uses on a power swing or hit... I've asked every student "what do you think is the most critical physical source of power?" you get shoulders, core, legs, blah blah.... all wrong... I use your exact analogy there, tell people pros can get on their knees and hit serves 100 mph and drives 260 yards easy... tell them to take up their wrists, guess what? THEY WON'T EVEN DO IT, it's that dumb, because they know... it's a real travesty that in the limited amount of golf lessons I did have earlier, NO ONE emphasized this... i had to discover it myself and one day I got the sweetest pitch shot in practice doing this, then the next day i hit the sweetest 100 yard approach shot with that move and my swing was better than ever... unfortunately that was on the tail end of my attempted golf career but I still teach others what I couldn't do early enough .. keep up the great work man and if your ever in S FL, hit me up and let's tee it up!

Too much instruction on TH-cam telling people NOT to release the club because they claim it’s flipping at the ball. Flipping is an early release at the ball…..correct release after the ball is ideal just as is explained here. Mike Malaska does a great job of showing how to use your hands and wrists and arms in the swing and not just drag the club with your body. Great video here!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! After so many TH-cam videos, finally someone breaking down the swing accurately. I've been struggling with my follow through as I tend to chicken wing my left arm (lead arm). I've been trying to mentally tell my arms to twist after impact but it's been difficult. Your video has definitely helped.
Adjusting my swings again after watching your video, my shots are terrible at the moment (due to the swing change) but man thank you thank you!

Excellent video. I work on this all the time; it is difficult with today's light weight clubs. The heavier high D, low E swing weight clubs make this really easy to accomplish. Cheers!

I've been looking for a video that shows how to get better rotation in the hands through the bottom of the swing and this one described the process extremely well. This will probably add 20 yards to my shots. I can hear the difference in air-displacement on practice swings alone. I was using an extremely strong grip as a band-aid for my inability to close the face through contact, leading to a lot of pushes, but I'm hoping a few days of drills with the L to L and thumb hold will help alleviate that entirely. Two minutes of L to L's had my wrists feeling a lot more involved in a faster clubhead.
    Awesome content.

I love how the mistakes list is exactly what some people are trying to teach on TH-cam and instagram. It is killing people’s games telling them to hold off the club and “release” with the body.

I think a good feel of releasing the club naturally is to not move the chest much from the top of the backswing. Feel like you are hitting the ball with your chest closed and swinging and extending your arms. When you extend your arms out they will slow down and the club will swing past them and the face will close, your hands will naturally return to square as your arms are extended in front of you like in the address position. Your chest will naturally rotate back to square. Your right arm will be slightly bent and wrist slightly extended back from the dynamics of bending them on the backswing and then shifting your weight to your left side so it won't be exactly like address. So the feeling is you are swinging down closed back to address with your arms extended, hands and clubface square to the target line. As the club swings past your hands it will pull you to rotate toward the target. So the follow thru is the club pulling you and everything decelerating gently not the body spinning violently pulling the club thru. So most good players thru impact and in the follow thru their body is not moving very fast it almost looks like their body is stopped till the club passes thru. While most bad players are over rotating their upper body and the club never really passes the arms.

Great video and great timing, because correct release is exactly my issue at the moment. Your demo of the incorrect release could have been a video of me. I think the thumb exercise could be just what I need to visualise where I need to get to, fingers crossed, not literally. The video definitely gives me a clear image of where I need to get to and that is worth so much. Thank you.

Thank you for this video. To hit the ball straight, I eliminated my wrists and still hit the ball well; however, this slowed the club head down. I will work on this as distance has suffered. Once in a while, I still hit 250 off the tee. The golf swing has so many elements to it is a lifetime pursuit. Time is at a premium. I am in my late sixties.

Great explanation of the proper release..I think many of us are too afraid of firing through and try to steer the club just hoping we somehow square it up at impact. Even though you didn’t explain it but proper supination as you illustrated also gets rid of the dreaded chicken wing which stalls all speed through the ball..I will put this to work on my next outing and will not be hesitant to let ‘er rip👍👍
