In lower doses, the oral phenyl has always worked for me. So, I'm not sure what they're talking about. It's not a placebo, either, I've tried lots of other types of meds for my sinusitis.
The amount needed for an effective dose with a particular person presumably depends on body mass, and other factors too. B.S. If it did not work, how did it get FDA approval in the first place, no matter the route of administration? As well, pseudoephedrine and ephedrine are VERY effective meds for nasal decongestant issues, yet the world has made these meds almost impossible to acquire for law-abiding citizens. How about just giving "informed consent" and letting people choose what to put in their bodies? Stop regulating everything to the pint of not being able to get the meds we need, when we need them.
Because the FDA used the studies at the time of it's approval, including the ideology of how those studies got conducted. The doctor flat out said this. As far as your anger towards the impossibility of getting meds with pseudoephedrine... you just got to ask for it from the pharmacy, because it's behind the counter. Much like nude mags are behind the counter. To keep them away from people who should not have it.
"impossible to acquire"? you just have to ask for it. Five minutes and having to talk to someone is close to an insurmountable task. They explained how it was approved, in some forms it works and other forms it cannot. Some versions of these medicines mentioned are staying on the shelves (with regard to Sudafed, at least, the version staying is behind the pharmacy counter). Only the versions of these medicines that have PHENYLEPHRINE are being pulled. Regular Benadryl, et al will still be available.
Someone is doing something they shouldn't be with PHENYLEPHRINE obviously. They do not remove anything that makes money for such a silly reason.
Regular Benadryl isnt for colds though - its an anti allergy
@@AmyC28713 Benadryl is used to treat sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, hives, skin rash, itching, and other cold or allergy symptoms.
Thank you for the clarification. Had me worried, my wife has allergies and takes it. Not runny nose allergies, the anaphylactic kind. A little disconcerting to see a doctor and journalists just yucking it up about pulling something that has helped us for many years.
Yes, benedryl does not contain phenylephrie. (don't know why they had the pic up)
In lower doses, the oral phenyl has always worked for me. So, I'm not sure what they're talking about. It's not a placebo, either, I've tried lots of other types of meds for my sinusitis.
The amount needed for an effective dose with a particular person presumably depends on body mass, and other factors too. It might be relevant that Americans are heavier now than they were when phenylephrine was originally approved.
I find 20 mg. phenylephrine is effective (only the phenylephrine, no other active ingredients), but 10 mg. is not
We know this from Pharmacy School. Don’t know why it took so long.
Hegseth coming in will find this out?
You’re telling me for over 50 years the government didnt know
My body went into went into Anaphylaxis shock. My doc said to take the Benadryl and go to the hospital immediately. The Benadryl worked to open up my lungs. My Anaphylaxis was caused by 2 medications having a reaction in my body.
Saved my life!
The graphic was misleading. It's not regular Benedryl that is being removed. It's the "PE" version.
Regular Benadryl contains diphenhydramine which is an anti-histamine. Histamines are part of the immune system’s response (and in the case of anaphylaxis shock perhaps an over reaction). My kid had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. A visit to the ER was in order. As I recall allergic reactions with throat swelling and pregnant persons in labor get past triage real quick. A broken foot bone can wait. Been there, experienced all 3 as a family member.
@@dennisd9554 - Standard Benadryl is an antihistamine, not a decongestant. There is Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion medication, which adds the ingredient this concerns.
benadryl is a life saver for people with bad allergy's. they have the nightime one and the daytime ones and they both work...and they are pretty cheap! my doctor says you just about can't get addicted to them.

It probably DOES work and they're just gonna release some expensive prescription only version of it and don't want anyone to be able to get it for under 500 dollars a prescription.
Bingo
It's been common knowledge for decades amongst pharmacists that this junk doesn't work. Most won't even recommend it. Just get the psuedoephedrine from behind the counter for about the same price, it works. Not everything is a conspiracy. 😅
No, they don't work. At least not for stuffiness. And most of these brands have versions without it anyway. Normal Benadryl and Sudafed use different ingredients.
@@ShadoeLandmanthen jus use normal Benadryl, jus because it doesn't work 4 U doesn't mean it's the same 4 everybody else.
@@MackMainSupreme You didn't even read my post, did you? Normal Benadryl uses a different ingredient than the one they say doesn't work. Normal Benadryl is not being removed. No one anywhere is saying normal Benadryl doesn't work.
I'm a physician. I've had a long term struggle with significant nasal congestion. Sudafed has rapidly, repeatedly, predictably alleviated my symptoms and has afforded me many nights of fairly good sleep I would not have had. It works for me.
If your talking the original Sudafed I agree with you. The PE version however doesn't work at all for me. Tried it once (the PE & it was worthless).
A doctor would know that isn't how things work. "It works for me" is nonsense.
Is there any good reason not to allow marketing of oral phenylephrine (without any other active ingredients) at a higher dose-say, 20 mg., rather than 10 mg.? I find that at 20 mg., with pills containing only the phenylephrine and no other active ingredients, it is very effective for a runny nose. I do not notice any side effects.
It might be relevant that Americans are heavier now than they were when phenylephrine was originally approved. The amount needed for an effective dose depends on body mass, doesn't it?
@@anonymoushuman8344 No, when taken orally your body breaks it down wrong and filters it out. It's not the dosage, it's the method of delivery.

Vitamins are unregulated by the FDA so most of the time you're just taking ground up houseplants.
Water, chicken broth from a can, bone broth, and some noodles and good to go
Unfortunately, there are people out there who are allergic to vitamins or foods that contain vitamins. I understand trying to encourage better alternates for daily living, but there are people who genuinely need these over the counter medications.

I give Benadryl to my 10 pound Maltese who suffers from allergies. And she can’t lie. Something much bigger and badder is going on here.
Yes, it helps with an allergic reaction.
benadryl is diphenhydramine - an antihistamine. that is all it contains.
My thoughts exactly. I give benadryl to my dogs when they have bee stings. Prevents them from swelling up. Also, give it to one for allergies. Now what do I give them if that gets pulled? Guess I'm stocking up. ...

At some point there will be nothing on shelves ( except supplements). For any other medicine you will require a prescription. And to get a prescription you will need to see a doctor. And to see a doctor, you will need good medical insurance. I see a very bright future here😢
following the dots we will all arrive at that thought, that is if we are all thinkers.
This is what they pushed hard to replace pseudoephedrine. I’ve said it doesn’t work for years when my doctor was pushing Mucinex.
Of course not, Mucinex is for chest congestion; pseudoephedrine is for sinuses. The stuff they replaced Sudafed with has never worked for me. I always get the pseudoephedrine instead and save it for severe sinus days.
Mucinex-D has pseudoephedrine in it, you have to ask for it. The stuff on the shelf only works on chest congestion.

Mucinex is guaifenesin. They are talking about phenylephrine (Sudafed PE and in some of the combos that are out in aisles like DayQuil) .

I need Benadryl for my allergies, I do not want to spray anything in my nose. Please leave my allergy medicine alone. I need Benadryl for food allergies, seasonal allergies, insects bites.
Your Benadryl should be fine. I take it, too. It's only the kind that is for allergies and congestion (that contains Phenylephrine HCl) that they're going to pull, I think.
It’s not in regular Benadryl. Mostly in decongestant cold medicine. Allergy Benadryl should be fine. I use it too
Why not just use whole food vitamins/supplements to provide support for your allergies? Practitioner's carry the best brands and they are real WHOLE FOODS!!!

Which practitioners?
Oh, big pharma. Haven't popped any pills or meds in general in decades.
Not news to anyone who has used it. I’ve known my whole life it doesn’t work. Who was buying it?
I tried it once after the FDA restriction on pseudoephedrine 20 years ago. Didn't work for me either and I haven't bought it since.
It's just in case you have an event that you need to fake being healthy or not as sick. It's not medicine it just tricks your body to feel better temporarily.
They've had studies showing phenylephrine doesn't work for many years/decades. Look up studies on it and the dates. They knew it was pointless for nasal congestion when pseudoephedrine/Sudafed got put behind the counter. Phenylephrine is such a trash medication, past time they pulled it. Sudafed/pseudoephedrine works, ask the pharmacist, you just show your ID for it.
I always knew this that’s why I never bought these!
I always suspected. Especially when the missus is sick. When I"m sick,,, I just crawl up in the corner and die,,, no complaints,,, let the nose be stuffed. In fact I roll up TP and use it as nose tampons so I can sleep.
When the missus is sick,, she wigs out. Because she feels like she cannot breathe if her nose is clogged. I've purchased everything I can think of... but honestly... I never realized there was alternate choices behind the pharmacy.
And now,,, I know. I will buy those instead.
I remember when they pulled Sudafed....which works GREAT ! As someone with a lot of sinus issues it was a life saver, and
a real problem when they pulled it..
And the "replacement" did NOT work. I thought maybe it was just me. So now we know.
You can still get it. You have to ask the pharmacist.
@@PinkRose0910 Correct. For a while you could not get it at all but then it shifted some time ago.
You have to sign in and present your id. You are only allowed to purchase a certain amount at a time which can be inconvenient, but obviously they are trying to regulate to stop druggies getting it for manufacturing reasons.
DUH! I knew this decades ago. It NEVER worked for me.
Just because something doesn't work for you doesn't necessarily mean it's ineffective for everyone.
But at least you don't have to suffer the embarrassment that people who took it and felt better afterwards might be feeling, hahaha.
Although another comment said something very insightful:
If other ingredients in these meds caused drowsiness, a lot of people who took them, slept, then woke up feeling better might have simply been reaping the benefits of a good night's sleep.

In the US we tend to let companies do all the testing and all the agencies can do it review the data, which is why this stuff takes years to find out and fix. I'm sure the companies would never cut corners.

It works for me bc it help with my sinus inflammations and excess mucus. Dries me out so I can breathe and the lowered inflammation causes my sinuses to make less mucus.
