Thanks for mentioning me! I intend on eventually doing better versions of the tutorials since they were made at a time where I didn't have any screen recording software.
Nowadays everything that gets added to the chinese PVZ2 is unbalanced, unfinished, or in some cases both. Like, look at the "chinese content overanalyzed" series by Flag Zombie and you'll see that every plant is unfinished in some way. Several zombies and plants can break the game off of simple interactions the devs werent expecting (for example hypnotizing any exclusive zombie) Hell, some of the exclusive plants (Icy Currant or the Rotten Red) give me the impression that a lot of the content that is added to that version is scrapped concept art or even cancelled prototypes made for the international version that they tried to put together using whatever programming skills they have. A small correction to the leveling section: It's not a rework of the international version, it came BEFORE it. And it's also 10x grindier and unbalanced; every level gives the plant 50% increased damage and then the level 4 essentially makes the plant boosted, because it allows it to have its plant food effect when you plant it. From what i hear leveling up a plant is also an absolute nightmare, especially if you want to get it up to level 5. And finally, you see those returning plants like Cattail, Cob Cannon or Gatling Pea? Yeah, from what i've heard the only way to get them is by spinning a roulette. And the roulette only gives you puzzle pieces for the plant, you need to win it several times. And spinning the roulette costs 100 gems. And there is a low chance of even getting it and not some other garbage.
Scrapped concept art/a cancelled prototype for the international version is LITERALLY EXACTLY what icy currant is. It existed in the international version as a seed packet in the files. It was planned, but obviously got scrapped.
Here's someone who played pvz online over the span of 2 years I still have incredibly fond memories of that game, it was way more fun than any other pvz game I've ever played. Every mode was fun, many different plants, mechanics and unique gimmicks to maps and zombies. And the turn based was a lot of fun despite what it looked like in the footage. Setting up your team correctly with the correct placement, making each zombie and plant target certain targets deliberately and to have the ultimates go off at the correct time. Especially when analyzing fights in order to come up with better strategies for certain stages, it made my younger self really feel like a strategist (sadly it usually turned into a slaughter with the same few plants cuz they were just the strongest of all i owned. I believe it was due to leveling that they were just better than anything else i had. And collecting plants for synergy was incredibly difficult) Leveling system, garden, visible health bars for both zombies and plants make this game stand out to me as well as the competition with other players. Garden, shops, pets, many different gameplay options made this game never go stale for me. I was heartbroken when one day i couldn't find the game anymore and only today did i learn that it was discontinued... The memory of it has long become hazy but it still pains me to never be able to play it again in order to experience the joy i did as a child
It's still playable to an extent. Only the normal mode works and even then, the normal levels don't work and would have to be modified into locked and loaded levels in order to work. I have a tutorial on my channel that shows how to set it up and it's linked in the description.
China loves PvZ so much they have educational comics covering a lot of subjects using PvZ characters, gag comics, and more All Stars even had a Taiwanese singer do a cover of Zombies on Your Lawn and added him to the game as a boss zombie
Yep, I have a few of those comics lying in the storage room. From what I remember about these comics is that tall-nut and walnut are brothers. Walnut goes to school. Several other plants also attend that school(including plants from Pvz 2). Torchwood is a teacher. Zombies are also featured, usually featuring the pirates and sometimes the zombies resembles the ones from Pvz jttw edition, but I haven't played Pvz 2 in a while so maybe there's zombies that look like that.
Quite the interesting project here. I’d like to see more of these actually, delving deep into these. Well done on all the time and effort put into this!
I honestly think it would be interesting to see the All-Stars leveling/evolution system be incorporated into conventional pvz gameplay in some way. It would be pretty cool to do stuff like peashooter -> repeater -> gatling pea in a normal pvz game, and they could get pretty creative with what the plants evolve into, maybe even having some plants evolve into existing ones with similar abilities.
Honestly, I got this video recommended and since I love long videos, pvz and learning whatever it can offer, this was a really entertaining half of an hour, it was amazing to hear someone talking about all those strange games that I have seen before but were too deep to search for myself, I'll be down bad for another video of this sorts even if it's more lengthy than this one, loved it
Fantastic video! I feel like if one day we get a full restoration of pvzO explaining the entire game would take at least 1 hour’s worth of edited video. Such a freakin’ insane game.
If they can make Heroes and GWs officially accessible in Mainland China (without VPNs), who knows what good stuff they could add to those games, especially since the International is pretty inactive at this point. Also, all of these games just couldn't chill out with the ads, man. And the painfully slow progression for F2Players is just another criticism that many PvZ fans tend to omit. Great vid btw!
Fun fact: PvZ2 in China is so popular that semi-official PvZ2 comics were made in China. EA claims they arent official, but the comics were approved by the PRC's government. Some comics are educational and teach kids about certain topics or facts about specific things, with some containing antropomorphic animals that interact with the plants (personally I never picked up any of those types with the anthro animals, cause i found them wrong)
speaking as a chinese here im really impressed on how much effort you spent on this video, it must be difficult for you to obtain so much info about games so old and in another language! I myself didnt even know theres so many different variety of pvz games in china
Suggestion for a possible next video:You could talk about the Chinese version of PvZ 3, there are several things to be explored in the game Great video!
I'd love to see you cover more of these Chinese spinoffs of pvz! I find these versions really interesting simply because of how bizarre they are. One of the funniest ones to me was pvz2 evolve. I also find it interesting that future star and super chomper were promotional plants for chinese drink products. There's even a commercial for super chomper
You didn't mention it, but the Chinese Version of Plants Vs. Zombies 2 has a level maker. A full freaking fledged online level maker. It's insane the amount of content it has even if a lot of it is unposlished. I actually played and completed all the levels in PvZ 2 Chinese so if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me.
thank you so fucking much for making this video i swear people been just glossing over this shit and acting like it’s completely normal. thank you so much i can’t express how thankful i am
All stars and 2c bring some good ideas to the table for the pvz franchise even if the implementation is a bit shoddy. Its alot better than what pvz2 is doing now, introducing a plant that no one will use because peavine exists. Really is saddening to see
I just hate how china has all the exclusive content I know there’s something where they can’t rip stuff and all but have them remake it and polish bigs and have it possible in the international version with level 1 plants and I think that would make a lot of money as well I can see 2 and 3 being updated simultaneously once 3 releases as the betas show it to be so different it will be a preference 3s more casual while 2 is more traditional
I still find myself wishing I could play PVZ 2 Chinese edition a lot, but I know it's probably a nightmare to set up, as well as the obvious of not understanding Chinese, but it still looks fun!
The last time I played, it wasn't hard to setup, but I did have to fake some type of Chinese ID. I didn't hire someone to forge me a new identity, but I did use a random text generator that was specifically made to fake a Chinese ID for games.
Although I've not read the novel(it's monstrously long with about 100 chapters), I've heard stories of it from my parents as bedtime stories when I was small. So I've recognized some jttw characters used as references in Pvz jttw edition. 7:57, plant on the left is a reference to Nezha, the third lotus prince, a deity in Chinese mythology. He not only appears in jttw but also other ancient Chinese literature. Plant in the right is probably a reference to Zhu Bajie. Zhu Bajie looks half human and half pig. He is one of the main characters in jttw. He is the disciple of Tang Sanzang(who is referenced at around 7:27). Red boy imp(8:51) is a reference to red boy(obviously). He is a demon with fire based powers(not just normal fire but inextinguishable ones so really powerful). His parents are also prominent figures in the jttw novel, there's a wiki about them too so I'm not gonna delve too deep into them. Skelton demon zombie(8:56) is a reference to Baigujing. She had a desire to eat the flesh of Tang Sanzang(which happens a lot with the demons in the novel). She has the ability to disguise herself as humans to deceive the protagonists. Her true form is usually depicted as a skeleton. I recommend reading the wiki of these characters if you want to know more about them(and fact check my comment). The novel is also pretty neat from what I've heard. I've been wanting to read it but I've been pretty busy to find time for it. There's plenty of adaptations of the novel, films, cartoons, comics. I've seen some, they're also neat. I may do an update if I find anymore references in this vid and sorry if I got anything wrong. Edit: so the plant at 26:08 is most definitely a reference to Sun Wukong(also known as Monkey King). One of the main protagonists of jttw. The bar it throws at zombies is a reference to his weapon, a staff. Kinda wacky they just straight up used a monkey head, slapped some kiwi slices on it and called it a day. Yet it's oddly charming for me and I don't know why.
If I’m not mistaken, I think that the world maps of PVZ Online are actually the same maps that were used in the initial release of PVZ 2. Because I remember when the game first came out, it was structured more like a maze rather than the scrolling from left to right to get to a level as it is now.
I’ve checked a couple of them, and I don’t think this is true. You can see for yourself if you compare the old International PVZ2 maps with the Online maps
An interesting fact about plants gone wild: There are actual plushies you can buy of some of those plants, obviously they aren't official like 90% of pvz plush but it's still an interesting fact (also it's the only reason I've heard of that game before I've even watched this video)
When I was younger I used to collect cards from local convenience stores of the "Plants got Wild" game mentioned at 10:35. I didn't know what game was it at all, just knowing it wasn't the actual pvz lol.
I never knew how China and PVZ has great relationship towards each other, hell they really add some bunch of cool stuff more than the PVZ we know that doesn't really had one, for all of us out there.
Im Vietnamese and it’s really big in Vietnam too, like I remember almost everyone I knew having it. All of my cousins played it on their mobiles or computers, or watching pvz related youtube videos, even my aunts and uncles had it on their phones! PvZ is huge there and I’d see it everywhere
In Plants vs. Zombies 2: Online, Winter Melon isn't the only Wild West Returning Plant. Spilt Pea, Chili Bean, Lightning Reed, Tall Nut, Pea Pod and Melon Pult are also in this game but they can only be played in the Adventure Mode!
PvZ Online is a favorite game of mine and I wish it would come back, and I am making mockups of how the game looked and how the world maps appeared too
Man, plants gone wild was such a good part of my childhood, I remember loving some sort of eggplant balista that evolved into a banana balista then some sort of pumpkin chariot, then a lotus flower tank and at last a sunflower tank
This is an old (?) ish video, but it reminds me of earlier (before I got busy) where I was exposed to the Chinese PvZ Modding community while I was browsing bilibili with it's own user created content (particularly through one of my interests: Arknights... where they created stages similar to a tryhard/super hard event called Contingency Contract in Arknights where you get to choose enemy buffs + own unit debuffs in exchange for a higher value "risk" level -- the idea behind these modded stages is to take that same idea of letting the player pick the buffs/debuffs and clear the stage with those in mind) That modding community seems decently strong with either self made stages (like my example above), and memes/etc of modded PvZ plants/enemies
honestly pvz online looked pretty fun to me. i used to watch a video of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum boss fight all the time thinking "i can't wait to get to this part of pvz 2!" not realizing it wasn't pvz 2. i wish i could play it though.

Aside from beeing really buggy the chinese edition of pvz2 has much more fun and interesting features in my opinion. Its so much better than playing the same arena level for a week for a chance to get a plant thats incredibly situationary at a point of beeing useless or a plant thats just straight up op to a point of beeing not fun to use.
There was another PvZ game that was completely different but had the same zombies, just reskinned The only things I remember was a few new mini games, a loading screen with the sunflower peashooter and zombie from this game with the zombie begging for mercy, there was also a flower that was 45 sun that gave sun, there was also a split pea that was a green man who farts two projectiles out of its booty, I also remember there was 2 zombonis that were a zombie taking a shower and another taking a shower in a large soup, and the jalapeño was a banana There was some footage of the game a long time ago on YT when I was little, but now I can’t find the footage, since I didn’t know you could screen record the footage the game might be lost to time The game had a kawaii look to it, that’s really all I can remember
I'm seeing comments mentioning most of these were broken as all hel, but honestly, the first 3 kinda blew my socks off. As an og pvz fan even now I'm really into all the features and add ons they had, so i would've definitely made a crazy Dave in my pantaloons if i found about them back then.
damn i really like PVZ's all stars battle mechanic and the evolution? level up? mechanic even if this second mechanic would mostly be a pay to win (i at least thing so..) because hey its a chinese mobile game and you know how donations works in chinese mobile game (mostly)
I think this is the very first guy who made this kind of video I keep looking it up on TH-cam but I didn't really saw anything so thank you for making this cool pvz video.
in PVZ Online the turn based mode was required for the regular mode, you had to get stars to unlock worlds (iirc, i finished it all before they added the water world), also the town was just a glorified menu, there was a bunch of different advertisement style things you could click on (for things to purchase), and you also had to unlock certain houses the more you played, also despite how barren it looks compared to PVZ2, PVZOL was relatively popular because its the only form of PVZ2 natively playable on PC
There's a mod out there that expends on the original game by adding two new worlds, Moon(inspired by the Zomboss boss background and the chinesse mods that adds this new world) and Campsite (who's visuals are kinda inspired by PVZ Adventures, the now long deceased Facebook game.) It also reintroduced Brave Dave under a new name, as well as many of the social edition plants like Ice Fume-Shroom, the Super Chomper and many more with quality sprites and animations. They are either obtainable via the store via in-game currency or unlockable trought gameplay. There's even a few PVZ adventures plants like Beeshooter. (Yup, thoses existed.)
I didn’t actually notice it until it was too late, but I should’ve thrown in some text of it later on. Don’t know why I didn’t, the fact that the Green Chomp… thing is a promotional Plant is a really neat topic

There's a youtuber called "Flag Zombie" who goes in depth on how the Chinese plants and zombies works, I recommend them!
Hi there! I noticcced that you had 69 likesss, ssso I went and ruined it!
@@DoodleLoodle24 what
Nowadays everything that gets added to the chinese PVZ2 is unbalanced, unfinished, or in some cases both. Like, look at the "chinese content overanalyzed" series by Flag Zombie and you'll see that every plant is unfinished in some way. Several zombies and plants can break the game off of simple interactions the devs werent expecting (for example hypnotizing any exclusive zombie)
Hell, some of the exclusive plants (Icy Currant or the Rotten Red) give me the impression that a lot of the content that is added to that version is scrapped concept art or even cancelled prototypes made for the international version that they tried to put together using whatever programming skills they have.
General game balancing is a huge problem,, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get pas lvl 24 of kingfisher world withought at least leveled plants.
Kong fu, not kingfisher lol
Scrapped concept art/a cancelled prototype for the international version is LITERALLY EXACTLY what icy currant is. It existed in the international version as a seed packet in the files. It was planned, but obviously got scrapped.
Here's someone who played pvz online over the span of 2 years
I still have incredibly fond memories of that game, it was way more fun than any other pvz game I've ever played.
And collecting plants for synergy was incredibly difficult)
Leveling system, garden, visible health bars for both zombies and plants make this game stand out to me as well as the competition with other players.
@kg8m253due to changing "business strategies" or something
China loves PvZ so much they have educational comics covering a lot of subjects using PvZ characters, gag comics, and more
All Stars even had a Taiwanese singer do a cover of Zombies on Your Lawn and added him to the game as a boss zombie
@@loojiejie7381 Some later plants are classmates while the Kungfu Zombies are featured other than zombies from the first three worlds
They added a tiawanese singer as a boss?
@@metal_pipe9764 Yeah, in PvZ: All Stars, he appears as a zombie wearing a tuxedo & playing a grand piano.
@@DABUNGINATOR who? I barely know anything about singers in general, let alone ones from Taiwan
Quite the interesting project here. I’d like to see more of these actually, delving deep into these.
Well done on all the time and effort put into this!
i’m so glad you covered Great wall and endless edition, they’re so underrated
Great vid btw!
pvzh早就可以无VPN游玩了
Fun fact: PvZ2 in China is so popular that semi-official PvZ2 comics were made in China. EA claims they arent official, but the comics were approved by the PRC's government.
Some comics are educational and teach kids about certain topics or facts about specific things, with some containing antropomorphic animals that interact with the plants (personally I never picked up any of those types with the anthro animals, cause i found them wrong)

fun fact: the Mon-Kiwi is the MonKEY king but as kiwi, the bar he throws is just... a staff. a 17,500 pound staff at that. it's called Ruyi Jingu Bang
i really hope archiving pvz social is possible, because i'd really love to play it some day despite it's many flaws
Is it possible to get the chinese version on pc? With cheats?

Great video! Keep up the good work. Can't wait for someone to make this type of video but for the fan games, because recently there are a lot of them.
Don't botter, it's more than littered with microtransactions that feel basically obligatory
It’s very nice to see Chinese spinoffs getting loved by community
When I was younger I used to collect cards from local convenience stores of the "Plants got Wild" game mentioned at 10:35. I didn't know what game was it at all, just knowing it wasn't the actual pvz lol.
20:35 why does scardy shroom look so much better than what we have in pvz2 now
For real why couldn’t they just make it look like that instead of having it be ugly looking
Pvz online not being preserved well was a canon event 😔
It's kinda preserved tho
I'd love to see more videos like this, please cover more Chinese PvZ
PvZ Online is a favorite game of mine and I wish it would come back, and I am making mockups of how the game looked and how the world maps appeared too
The bar monkiwi is throwing is a Bo staff a comically small one
16:21 they’re not modern anymore. Modern mobile games are the games that say the pink level stuff in the ads.
Man, plants gone wild was such a good part of my childhood, I remember loving some sort of eggplant balista that evolved into a banana balista then some sort of pumpkin chariot, then a lotus flower tank and at last a sunflower tank
Normal Pvz 2: “Here’s the old plants with some new ones and some cool time periods to battle in”
Chinese Pvz 2: “我们添加了十亿个植物和时间段,因为 bing chilling”
This is an old (?) ish video, but it reminds me of earlier (before I got busy) where I was exposed to the Chinese PvZ Modding community while I was browsing bilibili with it's own user created content (particularly through one of my interests: Arknights... where they created stages similar to a tryhard/super hard event called Contingency Contract in Arknights where you get to choose enemy buffs + own unit debuffs in exchange for a higher value "risk" level -- the idea behind these modded stages is to take that same idea of letting the player pick the buffs/debuffs and clear the stage with those in mind)
That modding community seems decently strong with either self made stages (like my example above), and memes/etc of modded PvZ plants/enemies
honestly pvz online looked pretty fun to me. i used to watch a video of the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum boss fight all the time thinking "i can't wait to get to this part of pvz 2!" not realizing it wasn't pvz 2. i wish i could play it though.
PvZ2C is actually pretty good and well liked in the pvz modding community

Aside from beeing really buggy the chinese edition of pvz2 has much more fun and interesting features in my opinion. Its so much better than playing the same arena level for a week for a chance to get a plant thats incredibly situationary at a point of beeing useless or a plant thats just straight up op to a point of beeing not fun to use.
7:07 Did you just use Oasis Area Music from Kirby's Return to Dreamland?
There was another PvZ game that was completely different but had the same zombies, just reskinned
The only things I remember was a few new mini games, a loading screen with the sunflower peashooter and zombie from this game with the zombie begging for mercy, there was also a flower that was 45 sun that gave sun, there was also a split pea that was a green man who farts two projectiles out of its booty, I also remember there was 2 zombonis that were a zombie taking a shower and another taking a shower in a large soup, and the jalapeño was a banana
There was some footage of the game a long time ago on YT when I was little, but now I can’t find the footage, since I didn’t know you could screen record the footage the game might be lost to time
The game had a kawaii look to it, that’s really all I can remember
I think it was called plants vs skeletons or something?
I don’t think so, besides the videos were in Chinese or Japanese

Can someone explain pvz 2 expedition it's right here 0:31 and has this weird SpongeBob peashooter hybrid
The Future Star plant was based off of a Chinese milk company of the same name according to the PVZ wiki
The chinese pvz games were something so present in the internet during my childhood that now it looks like a fever dream
in PVZ Online the turn based mode was required for the regular mode, you had to get stars to unlock worlds (iirc, i finished it all before they added the water world), also the town was just a glorified menu, there was a bunch of different advertisement style things you could click on (for things to purchase), and you also had to unlock certain houses the more you played, also despite how barren it looks compared to PVZ2, PVZOL was relatively popular because its the only form of PVZ2 natively playable on PC
Nice seeing you here!
There's a mod out there that expends on the original game by adding two new worlds, Moon(inspired by the Zomboss boss background and the chinesse mods that adds this new world) and Campsite (who's visuals are kinda inspired by PVZ Adventures, the now long deceased Facebook game.)
It also reintroduced Brave Dave under a new name, as well as many of the social edition plants like Ice Fume-Shroom, the Super Chomper and many more with quality sprites and animations. They are either obtainable via the store via in-game currency or unlockable trought gameplay.
There's even a few PVZ adventures plants like Beeshooter. (Yup, thoses existed.)
The best part about the Chinese version of pvz2 is that all the plants are free instead of behind a pay wall
