- Ben Hildred’s Santa Cruz Hightower reflects the rider, but neither of which would you expect to climb a million feet in 200 days, him too easy going, the bike a bit overkill. But looks are deceiving and everyone and everything has a reason.
You develop a wry sense of humor when you spend as much time as Ben does slogging up hills.
You’re also likely to develop a supreme mechanical understanding of the bike underneath you - what works, what doesn’t. Ben’s bike is tailored for efficient comfort while crushing climbs yet balances a sense of fun and unique practicality for the equal amount of descending.
Get the low down from the King of the Queenstown climb himself.

Road fools reference - gold.
I feel attacked, went down to 30t from 32t on XT 10-51. Need to sort out my fat beer gut.
Amazing achievement Ben, and great humour too.
I'm here for the Dad Jokes
Absolute hammer Ben! Can't wait to see what crazy idea you come up with next haha
Nice to know more about man and machine behind this absurd challenge!
Setting goals like "a million feet in 200 days" couldn't be more opposite of fun.
Haha, each to their own :)
Epic
Love the Props RF intro.
Ben is a champ.
And I was wondering how well my new Hightower would climb… I loved the U2 joke!
not better than a ripmo
Absolute legend.
That saddle’s waaaaaaaay forward on it’s rails!
edit - OK, I’ll deal with it then.
Amazing 💪
How tall are you?
I also have 28 psi in the rear. And 24-5 in the front.
Legend
Bike nerding 👌
Guess I'll go back to flats
This guy is hilarious. Don’t need less than a 34. Don’t need clipless pedals.
Hey, you don’t need a ridiculous seat post either. Oh wait…we all have our preferences? You can just say “I run …X… because I prefer it”.
Ah it was all said in jest dude, not to be taken literally
Here with my hightower with shimano xt drivetrain. One chain lasts 10 000 km this year. But after every ride i completely clean my complete drivechain. I think thats it lol
I am on an ebike though... 🧐
He is sitting on the back wheel and haven't even noticed. Get some modern geo.
'Anything less than 34T and you might as well be on an e-bike' says the guy going through 6 chains and two cassettes after climbing 300k. Maybe the 52T bailout gear was used a bit too much considering the state of that sprocket?
It was tongue in cheek dude, run whatever you want
Yeah Ben you should listen to this guy after doing what most would call impossible, he sounds like he knows!
300k meters is a lot of climbing? That’s 5 years for most people… hence the wear
No other reason to run clips? OoOooOok
