HELLO FRIENDS!! sorry for the delay - we've had a rough couple of weeks on our end, but i also cut my hair and though it was a ~process~, i'm very happy with the results!! what do you think? would you try this?? xoxo, saf
This is why you should always cut right BELOW the rubber band and not above. So your scissors cant go up at an angle. The rubber band acts as a leveler.
It would be best to section the hair into 3 sections; back of head, left side of head, & right side of head. Start with the back & cut below the rubber band using hair trimmers instead of shears(scissors). Then use the back as a guide to blend the sides of the head to the back.
I felt the pain of the back being uneven. I cut my own hair all the time, but I don't have anyone to fix it after so I just let it look weird and say "It fits my personality. A bit wayward and definitely not straight"
Not really? There's a difference between showing people how *you* do something on yourself and teaching someone how to do something in general. People often have weird quirks in the way they do things on themselves that DEFINITELY wouldn't apply to other people and shouldn't necessarily be taught lol. In the case of the video, it was both a tutorial and how she did it on herself, but that's not always the case. And maybe it shouldn't be, seeing how Safiya's hair was considerably thicker than the tutorial person's hair, and that kinda botched the process.
this is what i like about your videos, they mostly follow gimmicky ideas but instead of having 10:01 minutes of filler and screaming and self-promotion, you just do it so thoroughly and with evaluation and reflection so that its actually decently entertaining to watch, and i think a lot of younger viewers can benefit from consuming balanced content that doesn't promote bad ideas or empty clickbait or sellouts

Hairstylist here, if you pull the hair forwards like that with the pigtails, your front will be longer than the back. That’s not a good look. If you pull all of it back and have them in the back you will will get an A-line type of cut. But of course it won’t be the same as if a hairdresser cuts it. Just don’t pull it forward and you won’t get a mullet. Hope that helps!

I've been cutting my own hair for about a year now. Also looked at a few tutorials of pros showing simple ways to do refresh on your hair. Since then my hair has grown like 3 times my normal length, which I was never able to get longer, until I cut it my self. It is also healthier and looking pretty good. Only I do layers. Started to think about straight a few weeks back. Glad I bumped in to your video. 👍🏼
Ahhhh thank you so much for featuring our hair cutting video and linking to it in the description!! So nice to give our little old channel a shout out, we love your videos ❤️😱
Who remembers two years ago when we first saw a shorter do on saf when tyler gave her a surprise lob on buzzfeed's "couples give each other surprise makeovers"
I cut off like 4 inches of hair a few days ago by myself. I definitely have some short short front face framing hairs by mistake 😅😅 but sometimes it’s worth it to give it a go at home, especially with the price of professional cuts now a days. I just put the shorter hair in a braid or something and tell myself it’ll grow back
Doing the pigtail hack results in getting a V cut. If you want a straight cut you need to do the "unicorn" hack. I've tried both only for some minor trimming, so I learnt it through error and trial. But Saf's hair is too short and too thick for it, so yeah.
Both will have angles and end-layering, especially in the back. This can be lessened by removing the rubber-bands from the process, but rarely is it totally smooth from just the first cuts. You have to account for the original position of the hair in relation to where you're making the cut.
I've always cut my own hair and the solution I've found for the "duck tail" back is another rubber band for the back. Because if you hold your hair from the back to the same point as the sides, the back will be longer from over direction! My hairs roughly the same length and I've done it for many years! I hope this helps!
When I went to cut my own hair, I had the foresight to get a friend to do the back for me, but she ended up doing the whole thing. Looked pretty good! Always have a pal with you, it’s a world of difference!
Linde E me and my friend were at sleep away camp and one day she decided she wanted to cut her hair I was only going to trim the back but cut the whole thing it was such a fun experience def recommend if you have a friend who trusts you
ive cut my own hair for like 5 years now, im an old pro at my style now, i use the unicorn technique, using my bang length as my guide and cut at a slight angle so i get defined layers, always cut wet, and use a handheld mirror to clean up the back, mine is also a slightly shorter bob than saf's
@@SarooAhmedoo I mean I have been cutting my hair for years without them, it's just a matter of sectioning the areas off into thin sections that correspond in a lateral as well as horizontal manner, and keeping said scissors Sharp, because if you don't she might end up with split ends as you cut
Uh-oh. My tip: use an electric razor instead of scissors if you’re a beginner. It’s easier not get angled cuts accidentally. Works especially well for bangs (tape off the eyebrows!). Or just pay 15 bucks in a cheap hairsalon 😜
I did this a few months ago and it wasn't even jagged....it was perfect.... you have to use good scissors lol.... I can do a better job than cheap hair salons....
I'm planning on doing it home but i checked all my scissors and they suck so now imma go pay money tf 😒 Also a cheap haircut where i live is 3 dollars so yey
I bought some hair scissors and the first try was kinda weird but in the end I did amazing. The hair salon told me too that I actually did a perfect cut!!! I’d rather cut my hair by myself instead of paying 20 or more bucks. Then she put a toner into my hair and in the end it was 50 bucks. But it was worth it 👍🏻
I actually realised how difficult it is to cut hair with scissors if you haven't got a clue as to what you're doing. My mum decided to stop getting her hair cut by our hairdresser because it never came out the way it was supposed to, so she took matters into her own hands and because I was home for a couple of weeks between semesters she asked me to cut her hair at her neck because she couldn't really do that herself. I tried using the scissors but switched to the electric razor real soon. And I gotta say it turned out surprisingly well. At the moment she looks like the lost fifth Beatle :D
Thank you so very much for this video...I got "locked down" in Jakarta (where I had been visiting my daughter) on 12th March 2020...my tablets for a hypothyroid condition got over...as the months passed, my already scant hair dropped so badly that I was convinced I would soon be bald...I celebrate my 64th birthday at the end of January and was desperate to look decent...searched on TH-cam, found your video, watched it, and did the deed...successfully...you cannot imagine how much better I feel now...God Bless you! 🙏👍👏❤️
I did a home hair cut on myself when lockdown first hit. Not quite as severe a change as Safia did, but a decent length change and it actually turned out okay. I highly recommend the "uniciorn horn" method as it makes seeing your hair easier and it also means that when you let the hair down that the back won't be so choppy. Definitely invest in a pair of hairdresser scissors as they are made for this kind of job, as opposed to kitchen or craft scissors. I think Saf did a good job on her first try, and i'm by no means an expert at all, just speaking from personal experience.
This is the energy that I want cause TH-camrs are tripping up right now, being child predators and telling us we don't have depression, this is the right way to live and make TH-cam videos as well as stay humble but be perfect aaaaaa+
Re-watching again in 2023 and darker hair really suits you! When stylist said you look 'serious' I was thinking your are probably the least serious person I know of! I'm about to DIY my own but following Brad Mondo's 'DIY haircut' tutorial from lockdown.
Tip:buy a proper pair of hairdressing scissors. They dont have to be expensive, and it makes all the difference. When you have cut it,wash and dry it THEN go onto the final tidying up. 48 and never been to a hairdresser.
I’m a hairstylist so I’m not condoning this BUT I know people are gunna do it anyways, so just a general tip, when you over direct the hair forwards (as in, in front of your shoulders) and cut from there, you’re almost always gunna end up with a V in the back, or at the very least, a lot of extra and uneven length in the back. That’s why saf wasn’t able to get it “straight” in the back
DarlenexDaffodil I’m a cosmetologist as well I said the same thing and damn the ass hurt! Lol and I don’t think many people understood everything she said
@@Raelynn7777 I actually saw the comment where you experienced the "ass hurt". A rude, self-important cosmetologist (blue eyed siren) derided people who cut their own hair and get less than stellar results (including Safiya) as being stupid. Then, when someone pointed out their poor attitude, blue attempted to degrade them by calling them poor. Then you jump in, agreeing with blue's shit attitude and insults. No ones being "ass hurt"; you guys are just being asses and really not representing your profession well. Darlene, you aren't included in the "you guys". You were perfectly reasonable.
Yeah, over directing is the bane of all at home hair cutting techniques. Anyone who is genuinely interested in learning to cut hair at home should research professional hair cutting techniques and understand the basics of over directing and how it affects the results so you can better anticipate the results of doing it on yourself. And UNDERSTAND YOUR LIMITATIONS! It's a lot of work and there are some things you just can't do to yourself. Wanna trim your bangs? Sure. Wanna revitalize a 180 degree cut? Sure grab the ponytail holders. Want a full balayage and perfectly choppy layers? It's possible, but it's definitely in the advanced levels of professional work let alone on yourself at home with no training. Then there's giving yourself a pixie cut which clearly isn't going to go over well. Educate yourself and at the end of the day, if you decide you don't feel you'll achieve the results you want, just save up for a salon AND you'll have the added benefit of being able to better assess your hair dresser's knowledge and capabilities. Knowledge is power people. Also, you might come to realize that the results you want are incredibly difficult to get even when professionally done and you'll know to avoid a too-good-to-be-true stylist who claims they can give you unicorn hair for $50. And remember, part of the cost at a salon is sanitation and clean up. Those hair splinters are HELL in carpet (You have been warned!)

I think it's high time you pay homage to Ravenclaw and dye the ends a nice dark blue. I bet you'd look spectacular and still bat appropriate :)

I cut off like 4 inches of hair a few days ago by myself. I definitely have some short short front face framing hairs by mistake 😅😅 but sometimes it’s worth it to give it a go at home, especially with the price of professional cuts now a days. I just put the shorter hair in a braid or something and tell myself it’ll grow back
Lord Farquad would be proud Saf. He would be proud
I love you for that comment.
V2 Tanvi and Bhuvee Lord Farquad is quaking.
@@AsTheStormRises thanks, good to know
The unicorn thing gave me really bad layers
@@iqraakhtar6217 Unicorn is what i did when i wanted a shag cut! Think i saw Lee Stafford demonstrate it once. X
I've always cut my own hair and the solution I've found for the "duck tail" back is another rubber band for the back. Because if you hold your hair from the back to the same point as the sides, the back will be longer from over direction! My hairs roughly the same length and I've done it for many years! I hope this helps!
Well, it helped ME!!! Thanks!
safiye is so articulated and well spoken I love it its just *chefs kiss👌*
Never thought i'd say "Oh no..." when clicking on a Safiya video but here we are 😂
When I went to cut my own hair, I had the foresight to get a friend to do the back for me, but she ended up doing the whole thing. Looked pretty good! Always have a pal with you, it’s a world of difference!
Too bad I don't have friends🤣😭
Linde E me and my friend were at sleep away camp and one day she decided she wanted to cut her hair I was only going to trim the back but cut the whole thing it was such a fun experience def recommend if you have a friend who trusts you
or you could just go to a hairdresser
Lol I just cut it. Thank goodness my hair is wavy so can't tell how bad I did it 😂
always gold! good to see you still had to go to the salon or i'd be tempted to try this myself 😂😂😂
Lol yes... I cut my hair. Just can't afford the salon even after I attempt it.
BRO YOU'RE HERE TOO? (I'm one of your subs)
ive cut my own hair for like 5 years now, im an old pro at my style now, i use the unicorn technique, using my bang length as my guide and cut at a slight angle so i get defined layers, always cut wet, and use a handheld mirror to clean up the back, mine is also a slightly shorter bob than saf's
Put big round glasses get a lot shorter and you are edna moode
👍
Ronald Melgar thats what i thought too 😂
That's all I kept thinking
“ if we darken everything up a bit it will be harder to see” thats my logic when im picking an outfit 😭
Sasha Kaczor, Ya know, now her hair is black, and she constantly wears black, so will she be entirely black?
Lmao
Same
That's why I always wear black, so no one can see if I spill anything on me
Unless you have a white cat😂
Omg if she ever decided to add bangs to her french bob look she’d look so high fashion!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
True! She needs bangs :) that would look awesome
I've had bangs.... they suck
Bangs aren’t good for short foreheads. In my opinion anyway 😉
why is everyone in quarantine coming to this old video of her cutting her hair lmao

Brad is gonna totally explain what you did wrong in a video later. Because I think it is the way you sectioned.
Stacia Holmes and the fact that she didnt use hair cutting shears

I'm planning on doing it home but i checked all my scissors and they suck so now imma go pay money tf 😒
Also a cheap haircut where i live is 3 dollars so yey
At the moment she looks like the lost fifth Beatle :D
i agree, use a razor its more easier.

@@sab2680 you need to sort out your priorities
I did a home hair cut on myself when lockdown first hit. Not quite as severe a change as Safia did, but a decent length change and it actually turned out okay. I highly recommend the "uniciorn horn" method as it makes seeing your hair easier and it also means that when you let the hair down that the back won't be so choppy. Definitely invest in a pair of hairdresser scissors as they are made for this kind of job, as opposed to kitchen or craft scissors. I think Saf did a good job on her first try, and i'm by no means an expert at all, just speaking from personal experience.

I was predicting doom from the moment I saw her scissors.
That’s why saf wasn’t able to get it “straight” in the back
Oh shit the stylist literally said that at the end let me stfu and just finish watching lmao
