the tin-foil hat theory ive just now come up with to explain the differences is that one cater Split Card clone is in jp server and another cater clone is in en server, but they've been separated long enough that EN!clone talks differently than how JP!clone would

Can we just acknowledge for a second that JP Cater is pretty much confirmed to be bisexual in that convo with Vil? And then the localizers just, buried it??

Well, to be fair in the first book (I think) Cater says he doesn't care about the gender, as long the person is pretty or cute so is kinda confirmed that he's bi. But they really don't give the proper attention to this detail in vignettes and in the rest of the game. They do kinda bury this information

As Japanese, the English version confuse me a lot. I thought USA was more open to LGBT, but then they hide in game? I a little scared of how they will change book 7. 😅
Some people think that they made Cater more silly and dense in EN, but honestly they made him more depressed. His akward jokes are way more... I don't know... Fake? That it feels like a way of screaming "help me!!" in a loud voice and no one except for Trey still notices and really that hurts. I mean JP Cater feels more subtle about his feelings, like he really wants to hide it and EN Cater is the opposite and craving for help yet no outcome. I hope one day he'll be truly happy, our little boi 😢

It's honestly an interesting take they went with Cater. The moment with Vil never really came off as a bi moment to me, as someone who is also bi, it felt more like Cater was looking into how much magicam status he could get with Vil than actually date him. When seeing the change again with what EN did, really fits in what was going on between Cater and Vil. Along with how they did the change of Cater wondering if Epel having an older sister to being good at washing the dishes, it's an old fashion saying "homemaker", Cater was pretty much saying Epel has the looks of a good house husband pretty much, so that, personally to me hasn't change all that much. At least with the sister thing, they did fix that and he does have two sisters again in the EN translations.
Another bi person here. I disagree with take on the first one. I think it's a mixture of both. The way I interpreted the JP version is that he wanted to date Vil because he was "cute" and for social cloat. Even if he wasn't interested in dating him specifically, the fact that he asks out a guy still confirms that he's queer. I don't even think most straight guys would ever dare do something like that, even if it would gain them more followers on social media. It's still shitty and biphobic that they took that out. Let's face it. He gives off massive bi/pan energy. xD
Holy crap, the sister error really did get fixed! Guess it must've been done fairly recently cuz I recall the error still being there not long ago, but it's good to see the EN team fix the translation! I don't think Yuurei knows of this, so I'll bring it to them on Twitter just in case they don't see this.

A fanfic author I adore actually used Cater's interaction with Vil, his troubled relationship with his family, and the snaggle tooth confusion as inspiration for a really good fanfic. It's up to 19 chapters now! Basic gist is an adult Cater is caught in a fatal avalanche, but the experience awakened his up-to-then dormant Fae blood and caused his soul to transmigrate into his younger self on the day of his Sorting, and after being sorted into Pomefiore rather than Heartsabyl he took initiative to change things for the better.

Edit: I mean, other than the date with Vil thing, the atmosphere he gave in the ENG was too different compared to JPN.

I feel like the eng translation isn't consistent, like sometimes Cater said vaguely "I have many siblings" but sometimes he would say clearly "I have two", not like the jp. Btw, can we report to them to improve the translation? 😢
It can be inconsistent at times, but it also updates! For example, in the first release of Beanfest, Azul said that Ruggie is the vice housewarden of Savanaclaw, when he is not (and that hadn't been what he was saying in his original dialogue--they added it in for some reason). In the second release of Beanfest, however, the translation had been updated to be more accurate to the original line, so it seems possible! :>
I assume they wanted to make this game more "family friendly" in EN servers cause marketing differences and avoid pissing off any conservatives parents. Hence the removal of Cater's bisexuality. And they're probably gonna do the same thing to Lilia once chapter 7 comes out on EN soon to. I can't figure out why'd they change the rest of him though????
