Why are spells different in the English version of Twisted Wonderland? (ver. Signature Spells)

Trey's "Doodle Suit" became "Paint the Roses" in the English-language adaptation of Twisted Wonderland because, linguistically, there is something happening in the original dialogue that is impossible to translate into English.

I know most people prefer the “Arrow Afar” translation but I actually prefer “I see you” it just makes Rook and his unique magic sound so much creepier lmao.

I actually have so much more respect for translators now (and I had a lot before) because they clearly try their best to adapt all of this in a more suitable manner for english users. And also, sometimes I like new versions of spells better, like "Arrow Afar" sounds really good.

Do you think that the fae language (how it's mentioned in book7 is about the magic imbuing meaning behind the sounds) is related to how the signature spells work? I've been thinking about it for a while, which then makes Leona's even more interesting as the only match between sound/meaning in that sense.

So glad they changed I See You to Arrow Afar because the former name is giving stalker 💀also personally I prefer Doodle Suit 'cuz I just find it sound more adorable lolll but Paint The Roses isn't a bad name either. Thank you sooo much for this educational video ❤❤❤

Loved the video! I always wondered why it would be so different. I’m still not a fan of how different it ends up being because signature spells are said in English.
I’d wish at least they would have the translation as the main text but above it put what they are actually saying.
For me personally when the story is so intense and what I hear vs what I read kinda ruins the moment and is a turn off, so far to me all the English translations don’t sound as nice as what’s actually being said. I go to fan translations to really get the feel for it instead.
As Japanese, I wondered why western version was very different. I thought katakana was correct meaning, but I see that English is more deep 😅

I actually really like that Trey’s is the only one that translates what he’s really saying, and that it’s so obviously different from the voice line, because his signature spell has to do with overriding things and changing senses. It always makes me think that he’s saying “paint the roses” but it’s being heard as “doodle suit,” or vice versa, because his magic is somehow affecting the subtitles or voice lines. I doubt it was intentional but I still chose to think of it as a meta joke because it makes me happy
I've always wondered about the text changes on EN. That's actually a really neat detail, now that I know the reason behind it.
While some of the names are catchier in English, the dissonance between what’s written and what’s being said is so annoying. Maybe the game should have two text options, one more faithful to the spoken word and one that has a more localized approach, and players can choose whichever they prefer?
Damn I didn't know about people actually doing this complicated stuff with these several alphabets in japanese. I knew about kanjis having a guide above them but the rest was completely new. I was muffled at first to have the UMs names changed but now I actually appreciate it. Thanks for teaching us about all this!
