- This is an Icelandic folk song called "Hjer er svo kalt" which means: "Here is so cold". This was a project for my school. The only thing I had was the lyrics and the melody and I had to arrange the song to my liking.
Lyrics (first Icelandic then english):
Hjer er svo kalt því frostið fræið deyddi
fyr en til lífs það kyssti morgunsól
skyld' ég þá kvíða kaldri gröf?
Nei, kom þú blíða rósadöf
Hyl mig uns röðull rennur
Here is so cold, cold killed the seed
'fore to life morning sun kissed

I wish I could speak Icelandic and sing this song. It's so beautiful.
Same here, I try to sing along to get pronunciations correct so far so good. I love this song so much.

It's spelt "hér" not "hjer". Just sayin'.
+LinguaPhiliax In today Iceland it's spelled "hér". But in the old times "hjer" was the acceptable spelling :)
Basically, the letter 'é' (unlike the other icelandic vowels with ´ on top of them) is a combination of 'j' and 'e', aka 'je'. It was decided at some point to make that letter in the Icelandic alphabet and replace 'je' with it in every word that had it. The reason for this varies, but most likely it was to make a more distinction between Icelandic and Danish (f.ex. danish and Icelandic 'I' were once both 'Jeg', but now the Icelandic one is 'Ég'), but there are still some people who spell it 'je' (for example some people named Pétur who grew up with it spelled Pjetur) and it is not considered completely wrong grammar wise. And just like the icelandic 'z', any old text (or in this case, lyrics) containing the old spelling usually keep that spelling, hence 'hjer' instead of 'hér'.

einar mar this little melody was in Bjarni Þorsteinsson's book of 'Íslensk þjóðlög' or 'Icelandic folk songs' can't remember exactly what page though 🙂
